Lagos holidays

Located at the mouth of the Bensafrim River in the Western Algarve, Lagos is one of the most visited and popular cities in Portugal.

This area has plenty of historical interest as the origins of the resort of Lagos date back to 2000 years BC. The old city walls are 16th century; visitors also come to see the Porta de São Gonçalo (St.Gonçalo’s gate) with its watchtowers on either side, as well as the historic Governors' Castle (of Arab construction).

Along the cobbled street at the back of the square is the famous 'golden church' of St. Anthony which was rebuilt in 1769; and the church of St. Sebastian, dating from the 14th century is on a hill and offers fantastic views over Lagos bay.

Great value holidays in Lagos

In the Praça de Gil Eanes area at the centre of town you will find a vibrant and bustling evening setting with live music and street theatre and plenty of cafes and bars as well as restaurants to suit every palate.

Visitors on holiday in Lagos also frequently head for the picturesque marina with its pretty views as well as plenty of bars, restaurants and shops. Just over the marina bridge is where the fishing boats bring in their catch – and where some delightful little fish restaurants can be found.

The colourful Saturday morning market is also worth a visit for fresh fruit and vegetables, as well as rich holiday flavours such as olives, figs and almonds.

We’d recommend you head for the Ponte da Piedade (in front of the lighthouse) for a fantastic viewpoint of the sweeping sands of Lagos bay with the Monchique hills as a backdrop. From here you can even see all the way to Sagres to the west and Albufeira eastwards.
