Dining options failed our expectations.

Review by 851KevinH Blackpool, England, United Kingdom

We booked a 10 day stay at this Hotel through Jet2 Holidays flying from Manchester Airport on a half board basis. Everything went well with the airport services, flight and transfer to the Hotel. The Hotel is situated in the Attard area of Malta and is served well by bus routes 51, 52 & 53 to Valletta, at the top of the road from the Hotel on the dual carraigeway, which came to be the main hub for bus routes to other places of interest in Malta and the FastFerry to Gozo taking 45 minutes...

We purchased a 7 day tallinja explore card for the buses from Valletta bus station at €21 each and made our journeys very easy. The 54 bus route from Valletta stops right outside the Hotel. There are the beautiful St Anton Gardens across the road from the Hotel though use the crossing to get across as the junction is very busy with vehicles coming from all directions. The Hotel is kept well maintained and clean throughout and the staff in all areas are very friendly and attentive. Breakfast is served in the Villa Corinthia dining room and offers many choices of hot and cold items including cereals and fresh fruit and provides a good start to the day in such lovely surroundings. At lunchtime to the last serving at 2:30pm lunch is available in the Villa Corinthia dining room and this is available for those staying on half board using the €40 per person per day credit given. The only downside during our stay was that the lunchtime menu didn't change and gave only limited options and certainly not enough to sustain a 10 day stay. We found out on our first evening without any initial explanation from the Hotel that there wasn't any evening meal as we have got used to over our many years of exploring both in the UK and abroad where you come in from the day and sit down to be served with an evening meal in other company having conversation as to what places you had visited that day and on asking at reception what evening meal options were available we were informed either bar snacks in the Caprice Lounge, outside bar b q type dining in the Summer kitchen by the pool or Aisian cusine in the Rickshaw restaurant. This is when we asked if the lunchtime menu was available using the credit given and this was agreed though it meaning us coming back to the Hotel for an evening meal at 2:30pm. As we didn't like Aisian food and we saw other options as more snacky than an evening meal the reception provided a list of outside restaurants but at an additional cost to us. The Hotel management were very attentive throughout trying to solve our dining dillema but in the end we raised the issue with Jet2 Holidays and through initial text and then verbally it was agreed through the Hotel for us to change our board option to B&B and to receive a refund on the additional half board payment. Our room with balcony overlooked the outside dining area of the Caprice Lounge and gardens, we can only feel that a dog kennels was located at the back of the hotel as there was a lot of dog's barking especially first thing in the morning and during the many days of fireworks at all hours when we arrived. The room was kept well maintained throughout our stay and bottled water was provided daily. As for Malta there is a lot of construction work ongoing and hence a lot of dust in those areas, the roads are crazy if you were thinking of hiring a car and it is definitely a case of every man for himself and though a car hit the side of the bus whilst we were on the bus driver continued on his way without any contact with the car driver. We certainly visited the places of interest on the island of Malta and visited Gozo with very little to see there. We had a good stay but not sure whether we would return again.

So So Special

Review by MikeSWorcester_U_K Worcester, United Kingdom

Not our first visit to the Palace have been coming for over 25 years and it is much like a second home. Our second visit since lockdown ended last year and the hotel is slowly returning to normal, Breakfast buffet has returned fabulous as ever and Caprice Lounge and Rickshaw Restaurant has reopened food as good as ever. Josephine's Coffee bar serve a great coffee and cake of course...

The Summer Kitchen reopened while we were there and my only concern was the menu was a little small no risotto or pizza which once were favourites amongst guests and locals alike. Some of the older staff have retired but new members of staff carry on the ethos of approachability and friendliness, housekeeping keep the rooms and public areas spotless. Kevin in reception was always there to offer advice and help. I understand the hotel is to close in Autumn/Winter for some refurbishment so hope none of its charm is lost. We intend to return next year to see our Corinthia family as do many regular clients.
