The finest hotels around the world – like the Phoenicia Hotel near Valetta – have all earned their reputation over time. Indeed, the Phoenicia Hotel tends to make such an impression on its guests that they keep coming back.
As soon as you arrive at the impressive entranceway with its pillared entrance and portico, you'll see just how special the Phoenicia Hotel is. Absolutely in keeping with the traditional grandeur of the capital city, Valetta, it is a wonderful venue from which to really come to appreciate the very best that Malta has to offer.
The Phoenicia Hotel's 1920's design aesthetic is a welcome breath of fresh air – richly and comfortably furnished and full of beautiful details. It's grand but very accessible – the thickly upholstered plush chairs are there to be sat on, for example.
Working in such a grand interior, the Phoenicia Hotel staff have to work hard to ensure that the service they offer matches up. That the level of service here is consistently impeccable is a testament to them – and a big factor in bringing so many people back here year after year.
The large, air-conditioned rooms (both twin and double) are comfortably appointed and feature cable TV, radio, telephone, safe and minibar. Gorgeous harbour view rooms are also available, at a supplement. Whichever room you choose, you'll relish its cool, spacious, tranquil feel – the perfect place to unwind at the end of every day.
As one would expect of a hotel of this stature, the amenities are similarly excellent. There are beautiful swimming pools, there are wonderful choices to be made in the hotel's two à la carte restaurants; there is even a hotel jewellery shop. (And of course, there's an excellent gym.) To top it all off, the Phoenicia Hotel is set in seven acres of landscaped gardens.
The happy combination of its distinctive design and exceptional service means that the Phoenicia Hotel richly deserves every one of its five stars. That it's a convenient gateway for Valetta almost makes you wish you could give it a sixth star!

The Phoenicia still retains its reputation as one of Malta's leading hotels and it has a devoted following of guests who return year after year. Reflecting the grand style of the 1920's with elegant rooms and furnishings, it exudes an air of quiet luxury and efficient service. The hotel enjoys a prime position just outside the main gateway to Valletta.
Writing this review as I know many people will be keen to understand what the experience is like as a result of COVID lockdowns easing. We booked a 4 night stay at the Phoenicia and absolutely loved our stay at the hotel.
You are temperature checked whenever you enter the hotel, hand sanitisers are dotted around and pool sunbeds are socially distanced. Ive heard of other guests getting a free in-room minibar stocked up every day but this didn't happen whilst we were there...
Additionally, during our stay (late July) the hotel was very quiet. They only had 2 of the 4 floors open for guests due to low demand and that meant a very quiet hotel. Sunbeds were readily available any time of the day and the pool never got too busy. Unfortunately the hotel has started allowing day guests to use the pool if they spend €70 on food and drink, and that meant there were some noisy semi-drunk locals around the pool area with us...however I fully understand the hotel has to make money during these difficult times.
Other than that, it was service as normal, which is excellent. All members of staff were very polite and friendly, and we were even given a room upgrade and offered late check out.
Myself and my partner are already considering returning - this hotel is an absolute gem.
Generally a lovely hotel but:
We booked a superior room. On check in we were told we had a standard room. I queried this to be told they were the same thing...
So what is the superior room superior to?
Our booking said that superior rooms mostly have a view of Valletta and an opening window. Ours had a view of the roof over reception and we couldn’t open the window because of a curtain track in the way!
A taxi from the airport is a set 17 euros. The taxi rank is immediately outside the hotel. The taxi summoned by the concierge is 25 euros. Save yourself the difference by simply getting a public taxi for yourself.
Drinks at the bar are at least twice as expensive as bars and restaurants nearby.
Otherwise the hotel is well located and the staff are friendly and attentive.
We like this hotel very much and have stayed there during the winter for the last 4 years. It changed hands during 2019 and seems to have deteriorated slightly. There is a significant increase in the noise in what was a very comfortable and spacious lounge, caused by parties of 6-20 people which should be accommodated elsewhere...
The Bank of Valletta take over the hotel for the best part of two days in January making life for customers very difficult, for example being crushed into a bar. The menu has changed substantially in both the restaurant and the cafe and not to our liking - an attempt at fine dining. For us the bar food is the to be preferred. Room excellent, very clean and comfortable with a small balcony, free bar. Staff excellent, we could not expect anything more.
They were very nice. The hotel had no noise. The location is wonderful. It was five minutes by walk to see the valletta traditional part. Hotel congratulated my birthday by putting a champaign in my room and I appreciate for it...
Great hotel nicely located with amazing staff, let down by the standard of room servicing as with most 4/5 star hotels. I don’t want my bed turned back and two chocolates, I want my room cleaned properly and sheets changed regularly. Our sheets weren’t changed in the 7 days we were there.
