A WInter Month In The Sun

Review by Iainfrazer Instow, United Kingdom

Aparthotel Oceanus

We had a month stay in February 2020 and enjoyed every moment of it. We booked a one-bedroom apartment and probably because of the duration of our stay, plus lead-time of booking, found that we had been booked in to the sun-facing pool side of the main hotel. We found that the reception staff were, without exception, friendly, warm and helpful – (from observation in the reception area, where some others have complained of rudeness I would say, if you are rude to others, expect the same in response!). The bedroom was in fact two good sized rooms with ample wardrobes (but take additional hangers if a long stay!) plus a large en-suite with a superb walk in shower...

The kitchenette was adequate with fridge, two ring hob and microwave oven (although strangely there were no microwave dishes provided which limited cooking opportunities). I had trouble getting the Wi-Fi to stay logged in to my I-pad but the reception staff sorted that and thereafter had perfect signal. We made daily use of the small but well provisioned gym and other guests commented favourably on the indoor swimming pool. We favoured the large and sunny outdoor pool, but for sun bathing not swimming as the water temperature in February was pretty low.

Olhos d'Água

The hotel in right in the centre of the ‘village’, although it took us a few days to work that out as the cafe’s and shops are small and strung out a little. Less than 200 yards from the hotel is a very good Intermarché supermarket. Strangely for a tourist area, the staff have little or no English but it is well stocked and with fresh fish, wine at €3 a bottle and fresh crushed oranges costing €2 a litre, we got by! There is also a very good ‘farmers market’ adjacent to the supermarket with a great ‘local’s’ cafe/bar where we indulged in some people watching over morning coffees and afternoon beers!

Some 300 yards further on is a parade of cafe’s and restaurants. For day time we recommend the Vira Milho Bar, where you can have coffee, beer or wine of €1 or a Portuguese version of a full English for about €3! For evening recommend The 3 Marias. Pop in during the day to secure a table inside where seating is long trestle tables under a raftered roof. For €11 ahead, you’ll get three courses and half a litre of wine. Great value, excellent food and superb atmosphere! Alternatively, go the other way from the hotel, past the Sports Bar and a short walk down a steep hill finds you on the bay. A sandy curve between headlands, it is well served with bars and cafes and a magnet for the many ex-pats.

We were lucky that the temperature didn’t dip below 20°C all month, but unless you want sea, sun, sangria and nightclubbing, then Olhos d'Água and the Aparthotel Oceanus is an ideal winter break.

Review by William B South Normanton, United Kingdom

Needed a break and the Oceanus and Olhos d agua still meets the bill. It’s a bit quiet but feels very safe, bars and restaurants are open and safe to visit. Weather is wonderful if abit hot for us.beaches are safe and the sea is warm.

Friends not just guests

Review by BillBkand

We have visited Oceanus for many years but this year with the world wide chaos due to Coronavirus. We had the very best of help and assistance from all of the management and staff. They all went above and beyond anything you could expect. Being left without help from your airline/ferry companies is very worrying, when you cannot contact then but the help given by the Oceanus staff was very reassuring. You may find cheaper accommodation but at times like this you won’t find better.

What u see is what u get

Review by Lisa M Southampton, United Kingdom

This is a good place to stay on a budget holiday. Nothing amazingly glam about the accommodation, but it’s clean spacious. Not a far walk to the beach or local restaurants and super market...

But if your looking for somewhere a bit more up beat, I’d stay closer to Albufeira or hire a car. You might get bored of the local area if your staying for a week or more. We booked outings through a app called GetYourGuide. We did the jeep safari, they picked us up from the hotel doors, and drove us up the mountains. We also went on a boat ride to see the caves and dolphins, amazing day. The marina in Albufeira is worth a visit too. Hotel staff were friendly. Pools area is small. We went out of season so it wasnt busy, but I can imagine in summer struggling to find space. Food from the pool cafe was very nice. Didn’t have breakfast, so can’t comment on that. Indoor pool u have to wear a swim hat (wasn’t happening) so I didn’t go in. Bar down stairs was packed on karaoke night, very surprised, as it was February. But you couldn’t get a seat. So again high season must be worst. Other nights it was quite peaceful. I like the way you can get straight in the lift by the bar, you go up to your room. My teenagers enjoyed the pool table, but there wasnt anything else for them to do. Drink we’re fairly priced. Facial was good, at half price. Main road is noisy in the standard rooms, also you don’t get any sun on your balcony that side of the building. We were able to check in early so that was a bonus.
