The hotel is located right next to Koggala beach near the Sri Lankan port of Galle, which is home to the UNESCO world heritage listed Dutch Fort and the Dutch Reform Church. Koggala is a small beach village with its own cultural centre in the form of the fascinating Museum of Folk, Art and Culture. Guests may enjoy taking a boat trip on the lagoon and Kogggala Lake to see the surrounding small islands, famous for their fantastic bird watching. Its proximity to the picturesque Lake Koggala means that guests have the opportunity of coming to the hotel by seaplane, which is a truly impressive experience. The hotel is located some 140 kilometres from Colombo International Airport (CMB). The train station is some 10 km away.
The hotel, which was recently opened, is located near Galle and borrows its style from the ancient Dutch Fort, but puts a modern, 21st century spin on it. The hotel comprises a total of 49 rooms. It has a lobby with hotel safe and currency exchange facility. Bar and dining facilities also feature. Room and laundry services are on offer. Parking facilities are available for guests arriving by car.
Highly recommended. Really nice people/staff, tasty food, wonderful and safe place to stay. Clean/modern/nice rooms...
One of the best hotels visited upto now. Appreciate alot the hospitality of the hotel.
This hotel is beautiful! The room was the nicest we stayed in during our time in Sri lanka, it was huge and very clean. The bathroom was absolutely stunning and the room went straight out onto the pool area. We were only here for 1 night but wish we had been there longer. The pool area was lovely, with a beautiful view straight onto the ocean. We had the seafood buffet for dinner which was absolutely delicious- best prawns I have ever had...
There were lots of options for non seafood lovers on the buffet too. All of the staff were all very welcoming, helpful and friendly - a great team!
We went to The Fortress Resort & Spa on July 17, 2020 for a one night stay. And this is the very first hotel visit just after the pandemic Covid-19.
We were warmly welcomed by the front office staff and we were given the room even before the check-in time.
We must say that they are strictly following the guidelines provided by the Health Authorities in order to minimize the risk on Covid-19 and it is really really appreciated.
The room we selected was a Beach Room and it was perfectly arranged and was so spacious. Linen and the other amenities were also really good...
Rooms were sanitized and they were willing to sanitize it whenever we requested.
We were checked-in for lunch and we requested our lunch to be served to room. They had a three course set menu for lunch with three options each to be selected from. And even for the diner, they have had the same menu but on our request they have provided us with what we have requested. Actually, at that moment, we were told that they have only a selected set of food items during this situation. There was a buffet for the breakfast on saturday and it was fine. Overall, food was delicious and provided accroding to the health guidelines given due to the Covid-19.
They have a massive swimming pool and it was nicely maintained. Clean & tidy and there was a jaquzzi in the pool too.
Overall experience at the Fortress was highly satisfied and their service standards were really appreciated. Recommended.

We spent a week at the Fortress as C-19 really started to take a hold in Sri Lanka, so we confined ourselves to the hotel for a week's stay. From our comfortable and spacious Ocean Loft we listened to the sound of the ocean and relaxed. We used the excellent little gym most mornings before breakfast, and swum in the infinity pool and the sea during the day...
The staff are so friendly and helpful and almost felt like family when we left, having helped with travel arrangements and paperwork needed to get to the airport. We ate either from the a la carte menu or the daily buffet, and the choice and quality of the food did not disappoint. As the hotel emptied, the staff's commitment to their guests didn't waiver even though they knew the hotel would soon close with job losses. Tell your friends about us, and come back and see us, they said. So we are, and we hope we will. Thank you all, we loved our time with you!
We stay here for four nights at the end of a two week tour of Sri Lanka. What an absolutely stunning hotel, built in a Dutch colonial style with spectacular views of the ocean. We stayed in a fortress room and from what we could tell was one of only 6 rooms which didn’t have a direct sea view...
But even still the room was huge and had a massive bathroom with separate shower and freestanding bath. The room had a huge balcony but we didn’t really use it as it was very over looked by the room next door. Instead we spend most days by the gorgeous infinity pool overlooking the beach and sea. There was a good amount of loungers nicely spread out so you didn’t feel to close to other guest. Breakfast was a buffet style and there was a lot of choice both hot and cold. The pancake station was especially good. The dinner selection was very tasty, we ate off the a la carte menu and also the traditional Sri Lankan buffet evening. Both were great and I particularly enjoyed the duck with risotto and grilled mango. The hotel is a short tuk tuk ride from Galle and we spent an afternoon wondering round the place. This hotel was a truly lovely way to end an amazing holiday. We left feeling relaxed and rejuvenated and would recommend this hotel to family and friends.
