Don’t buy i to “Reserve” it’s 4-star at max

Review by Thus N Maha Sarakham City, Thailand

If you want a luxurious vacation with supreme service that comes with the word “reserve,” stay away from this hotel.

We booked the Ocean Reserve Suite with suite and villa experience but there’s nothing really luxurious about it. At max, this hotel would be only four stars...

The good things are that the hotel is large and spectacular. It’s a beautiful building with a lot of area that includes 3 swimming with a very long stretch of white sand beach. Chaweng beach is one of the very best in Samui. So you can always enjoy that.

The Reserve Cenvaree Spa is one of the best I have visited at luxury hotels. I tried the Echoes of the Past treatment that include oil message, crystals treatment and rose quartz facial treatment. It was so unique yet clever. The crystals, believe it or not, actually works! So I’ll definitely visit the Spa again when I’m back in Samui.

We want to highlight Khun William, our driver from the airport, who really made us feel special and just really so friendly yet respectful. He’s the type of staff that this hotel needs the most.

However, these are probably only good things I can say.

Our package includes a Reserve Host, aka. butler which was no where to be found. And so does the herb specialist who will take us on a tour at the herb garden to pick out local herbs for cocktails or spa. Apparently I had to book with a spa. The room description on the website says it comes with bathtub and rain shower. Well, don’t trust their official website. Apparently the copy are incorrect. Many room types do not have bathtubs. The bathroom didn’t have essential amenities such as shaving kit, dental kit or comb either. I was told that they intentionally left these out so that guests can have more interaction with the staff. 😬 Turn down is possibly the weirdest. We got a chocolate treats with different names on the card, our towels were not changed, they move water bottles and glasses from the bathroom to bedside tables. A manager came up to apologize on the incorrect room description with afternoon nibble leftovers and cocktail ingredients for mojito. But the spirit in the minibar are vodka, whisky and gin.

The food at Salt Society was okay. Nothing to run home. The breakfast is worse. It was a mess of a show. Egg station cooked a wrong dish. Noodle station didn’t serve a bowl with a saucer. Instead the cook just pointed to ones so that guests can grab themselves while holding hot bowl of food. The buffet line doesn’t have pot holders, so all those steam waters always wet the countertop. And the afternoon nibble is literally three bites of food. I can name at least 5 different properties that have better club benefits. At least 80% of the staff do not know what they are doing. Literally the most frustrating part is that what makes 5 stars are the staff and service.

Se have decided to spend dinner on the last night at another hotel, which was completely different in terms of service and flavors. We used the limousine service provided by the hotel. On the return trip, we had to wait for almost an hour for the car to arrive. We scheduled it at 9 pm. We call them at 8:30 pm to make sure that the car came on time. But the car arrived at 9:40. During check-out, I had to raise up the issue to duty manager and the only thing I got was a sorry. No compensation offer on the waisted time.

I try to reach out to management to discuss about my experience at the hotel. He didn’t reply. So we felt like our money are just bring wasted there and we are not really valued. So we decided to spend our last afternoon somewhere else to avoid the frustration.

In conclusion, if they do not fix the problem, stay as far as possible.

So much to Love, but definitely room for Improvement

Review by 87daveg Sydney, Australia

I really wanted to say that I Love Love love this property but unfortunately due to staffing issues (not enough staff - hotel mgmt acknowledge) - the overall service let down the experience a little. But in saying that we can’t wait to return to hopefully experience those service improvements. The property is Beautiful- grand spacious grounds, amazing pools, stylish beach bar & restaurants - it feels Lux...

We stayed in the upgraded Pool Suite which did not disappoint- great location in the property, perfect sized plunged pool, good sized suite with stylish fittings.

The negatives which need to be addressed - worst room service menu I have ever seen!!! Limited to nothing offering - amazed there was little to no Thai meals & none of the basics like a club sandwich and chips on the menu. It was clear housekeeping dept was stretched - rooms were cleaned to a very basic standard. We were always missing towels & toiletries after each service and on one occasion we returned after being out all day and our room had not been cleaned at all. The property is positioned at the end of chaweng beach, unfortunately due to past/recent covid situation is a ghost town, most businesses are closed down - so it’s a fair hike to any local restaurant, bars, attractions.

Overall the staff in all areas are so very friendly & helpful but it’s clear that due to being under staffed they are stretched and perhaps not fully trained to a high level (most noticeable in the restaurants) As mentioned the negatives do not detract from the fact that we enjoyed our stay and can’t wait to return to Centara Reserve & Koh Samui

Avoid for a stress free vacation

I could summarize my review by saying that if I could turn the clock I would pick another on of the properties on Samui - this one just ruined my vacation.

Absolutely stunning property with what appears to be a committed and dedicated GM. But that's where the good things end. Definitely not 5 star and maybe not even 3 star service by Thai standards

  • Breakfast area is an absolute mess as mentioned by other guests...

Egg station couldn't care less about what you ordered. Items run out and staff seems to be absolutely clueless. Almost seems like all the staff hate their jobs.

-Sleep quality was poor with guest above my floor jumping around most of the night

  • Check-in takes forever and no apologies offered

  • Room service is pathetic - Calls were not answered during day time hours. Simple requests like ice bucket to the room were "forgotten". And when calling back to check on it front desk was like okay no big deal we will take care of it now. One can understand teething issues but missing out on such things can be a killjoy

  • Room service does a great job of cleaning up but very inconsistent in how they do the placement of things unlike my stays at Banyan tree or Marriott properties.

  • Staff never seems to care or acknowledge guests (other than the GM who even while doing the most basic errands has a smile on his face for every guest)

-The pool bar and Salt is fantastically run

Such a difficult review to write … could be 5 star but maybe 3 ….

Review by Fleetcat Ko Samui, Thailand

We came over Christmas to a recently opened and busy hotel and we expected glitches. And there were many. But I am certain that these will be ironed out with time so I’m mostly turning a blind eye...

The hotel is finding its feet but with the quality of staff and location it is only a matter or time before it excels. This is undoubtedly a 5 star resort but is it a real 5 star hotel? Well no. And if you go in with that attitude you will be fine. Naïve but charming would be my summary. The real estate has been beautifully renovated. Because it is brand new the rooms are immaculate and the linens and towels are pristine which is lovely. The choice of dressing gowns is wonderful and the linen ones were perfection – regret I forgot to ask if I could buy one. If you know Chaweng Beach you will be aware that this is the absolutely best spot. Right in the middle of the south with fantastic powdery sand. As late December is the end of the rainy season the beach is narrow and the waves are high which does not show it at its best but in a few weeks time it will be stunning.
I could go into relentless detail about small imperfections but the main downside for us was the food.
Breakfast was chaotic and not relaxing. Systems were in place to give a wee wooden card to the egg chef which we initially thought was genius but on different days worked … er… differently. The whole room was panic stricken. Coffee didn’t arrive. OJ ran out. Pretty poor to be honest but guessing this will be fixed or indeed not an issue on a less busy day. Quality of food was … OK. Dinner is either the very posh ACT 5 or the very casual Salt Society as the Terrace was shut in the evening which for us was a loss As a vegetarian ACT 5 did not work for me. Salt was noisy and far too casual for dinner. We only stayed two nights and struggled with food.
Being a bit pedantic we don’t drink spirits so the complementary whisky, gin and vodka were lost on us but a packet of crisps or nuts (even if we had to pay) in the minibar would have been welcome. Vegetarian options were not clear or indeed marked. I ordered truffle mac n cheese and it came with bacon so for me inedible.
But this is truly a magnificent family friendly resort on a beautiful beach so if it is your demographic absolutely not to be missed. Just possibly not for an older (possibly fussy) couple.
