This morning, embark on a fascinating sightseeing tour of historic Old Delhi, starting at one of India's largest mosques, the Jama Masjid, a striking building built from deep red sandstone and white marble. Moving on the journey by rickshaw through the winding lanes of Chandni Chowk market, one of the oldest and busiest markets in Old Delhi before continuing past the impressive Red Fort by coach. Conclude this morning's tour by visiting the Raj Ghat, the minimalistic cremation grounds of Mahatma Gandhi. This afternoon, make a poignant visit to the 42- metre high, free-standing India Gate, built in 1931 to commemorate the 90,000 Indian soldiers who sacrificed their lives in World War One. Go on to witness the generous spirit at Bangla Sahib Sikh Temple where teams of volunteers serve meals for thousands of visitors daily. End today at the soaring Qutab Minar, India's tallest stone tower.

After breakfast, board a ferry to Elephanta Island. The Elephanta Caves, excavated between the 5th and 8th centuries AD, are a collection of cave temples primarily dedicated to the Hindu God Shiva and have been recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Return by ferry to start an afternoon tour of Mumbai. Starting at the Gateway of India, a colossal monument erected in 1924 to commemorate King George V's visit, go on to discover a variety of the city's older landmarks and monuments including the ornate Victoria train station. Finally, take a trip to Mani Bhavan, a mansion where Mahatma Gandhi stayed during his visits to Bombay.

Wattala to Nuwara Eliya

This morning, embark on a magical journey up into the lush hill country towards the renowned colonial tea planters' retreat of Nuwara Eliya. En route pass the Maskeliya Oya river, famed as the filming location of the 1957 Oscar-winning epic Bridge on the River Kwai. Wind on through verdant valleys and misty hillsides, passing gushing waterfalls, pretty villages and brightly dressed tea pickers working the plantations. Continue to Nuwara Eliya, often referred to as 'Little England', due to its golf course, parks, and colonial buildings.

After breakfast enjoy a walking tour of the town and discover its colonial past. Take a short drive to nearby Hakgala Botanical Gardens, originally established in 1861 to cultivate Cinchona, the source of the antimalarial drug quinine. Later the gardens evolved into the spectacular home to over 10,000 species of flora you see today. Enjoy lunch at the famous Nuwara Eliya Golf Club, followed by a stroll around the beautiful course before rounding off the afternoon with a refreshing cup of Ceylon tea at the famed Hill Club.

Nuwara Eliya to Kandy & Dambulla

Depart Nuwara Eliya and head for the city of Kandy, a former capital of Sri Lanka. On the way there, stop to witness the spectacular Ramboda Waterfalls before a visit to a tea plantation for an insight into how this popular beverage is produced, from picking to pouring. Continue to Kandy, where palaces and parks built by Sri Lankan monarchs rub shoulders with British colonial architecture created by the handover in 1815. A short tour will give you a flavour of Kandy old and new including a visit to the holiest shrine in Sri Lanka and a hallowed place in Buddhist culture, the Temple of the Sacred Tooth. Finish the day with a drink at the iconic Queens Hotel before continuing to Dambulla for your overnight stay.

Sigiriya Rock Fortress and Dambulla Rock Temple

Start today with a visit to the most revered site in all of Sri Lanka, the Sigiriya Rock Fortress Citadel. On the flat summit of an immense rock rising 200 metres above the treeline lie the ruins of an ancient palace and fortress complex built 1,500 years ago. See pioneering examples of urban planning and hydroengineering, and gaze at frescoes of celestial nymphs and well-preserved paintings in the Sheltered Gallery. From this iconic site head on to the Dambulla Rock Temple, a World Heritage Site dating back to the 1st century BC. The complex of five caves contains an extraordinary array of Buddha statues and exquisite wall paintings that cover an area of 2,100 square metres. As you enter Cave One you can't miss the huge reclining Buddha, hewn out of the rock face and measuring fifteen metres high!

In the afternoon continue to Colombo for your final night at the world-famous Mount Lavinia Hotel. Immerse yourself in the old-world ambience of this magnificent building, which was built over 200 years ago as the Governor's residence and has played host to Royals and celebrities from around the world. Visas

A visa is required for entry into India. British Citizen Passport Holders will need to obtain an e-Tourist Visa (eTV) for travel to India. We work closely with The Travel Visa Company who will be able to arrange your visa on your behalf. Please call them on 01270 250 590 and quote ?Mercury Holidays?. The cost of the visa is approximately £114 per person. The Travel Visa Company can only apply for these 120 days before your proposed travel date and takes around 10 working days to issue. It is only valid for a 60-day single entry stay from the date of arrival. When calling the Travel Visa Company, they will advise you of any changes to the fees or the procedure, they will also advise you of all information they will require in order to apply for the visa. Alternatively, you can visit The Indian Visa Application Centre in London: 142-148 Goswell Road, London, EC1B 7DU. Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months before you enter India.

The visas take around 10 working days to issue and are only valid for 3 months from the date of issue. Alternatively, you can visit The High Commission of Sri Lanka at 13 Hyde Park Gardens, London, W2 2LU. Please note: If you have chosen to add the ?Kerala Beach Stay? or ?Highlights of Kerala? extension to the end of your tour, you will need to obtain an Indian visa prior to your UK departure. The Travel Visa Company offers a service which takes can take up to 15 working days at busy times. The cost is approximately £114. Alternatively, you can apply for your own visa. You can apply in person or by post to the Indian Embassy in London: 142-148 Goswell Road, London, EC1V 7DU. There are also regional centres elsewhere in the UK. Payment

If booking more than 10 weeks before departure a deposit of £250pp will need to be paid at the time of booking with the full amount payable at 10 weeks prior to departure. The deposit applies to adults and children. If you are within 10 weeks of travel then the full balance of the holiday will be payable.

Flight Information

Your initial flight is to Delhi International Airport with Jet Airways (9W), departing from London Heathrow Terminal 4
IMPORTANT: Please note that final flight details will be confirmed on your e-ticket and final documentation which will be sent to you approximately 10 days before departure.
Each passenger is entitled to 23kg of hold luggage, however weight restrictions will be finalised on your e-ticket receipt. Should you wish to take additional luggage you will need to pay extra at check-in. Check-in should be at least 3 hours before departure. Checked baggage allowance may vary. Please refer to the bottom right of your E-ticket receipt for the correct baggage allowance. For example, if it shows ?20k? this means your allowance is 20kg; or ?1PC? means One Piece not exceeding 23Kg. Important note: For handling purposes, the maximum weight of any single piece of baggage must not exceed 32 Kgs. Please refer to the Airline?s website for further details and the most up-to-date information. Hand Luggage: One piece of hand luggage with maximum total dimensions not exceeding a total of 115cm in size and 7kg in weight.

Physical Accessibility

This tour is accessible to most people with an average level of fitness and normal mobility. It involves full days of sightseeing, often on foot, and includes some climbing of stairs and getting on and off coaches and boats. This tour is not suitable for anyone with walking difficulties. Please note there are approximately 1300 steps to Sigiriya Rock Fortress.

Group Size

The minimum number of travellers in your group will be 10, and the maximum will be 40. If in the unlikely event there are less than 10 people booked on your tour date, we will endeavour to reduce any disruption to your holiday and try to operate your tour with lower passenger numbers. If we are not able to operate your departure date, then you may be asked to change to a different date and a full refund will be made available to you should this alternative not be suitable.

Tour Guide

This is a fully escorted tour, meaning that you will be met on arrival in India by your national guide who will remain with you for the duration of your trip in India. The flight from Mumbai (India) to Colombo (Sri Lanka) is not escorted. On arrival in Colombo (Sri Lanka) you will be met by your national guide who will remain with you for the duration of your trip in Sri Lanka.

Currency Information

The currency in India is the Rupee or Rs. The Rupee is a closed currency and officially you are not allowed to take any cash out of India. US Dollars and GBP are also widely accepted in India should you wish to keep an alternative currency on you.

Personal Expenses

You will need to take some extra money with you to cover any personal purchases, such as souvenirs, laundry and extra drinks and snacks. Approximately £200 - £300 per person will be sufficient for the duration of the tour.
Tipping is at your discretion; however, we would recommend approximately £12 per person for the duration of your tour. Any accompanying guides we suggest approx. £3 per person per day and for the driver we suggest approx. £1 per person per day. All tips will be collected by your guide at the beginning of your tour for your convenience. Tips are accepted in the local currency, however, it is asked that if you do not tip in the local currency that you only pay with notes, as coins cannot be exchanged.
Tipping is customary in Sri Lanka. Tips will be collected by your guide at the end of your tour for your convenience. We would recommend approximately £3-5 per person per day for the driver and assistant and £4 per person per day to the guide. If you do not tip in the local currency, it is asked that you do not give coins as they difficult to exchange.
