The islands of idiosyncrasies famed for timeless tradition, sun stained medieval architecture and an unmistakable Italian charm, offer visitors one of Europe's best island adventures. This sensational ten-day journey takes you into the heart of Sardinia's capital city, along the winding lanes of Alghero's old town, through the Corsican citadel over Calvi and gives you the chance to cruise upon Scandola Nature Reserve's shimmering waters in search of dolphins.
Depart the UK on your scheduled flight to Cagliari, where you will be met and transferred to your hotel in the city of Oristano. The remainder of today is at leisure to wander sun-kissed avenues, unwind within a tucked away cafe or simply explore at your own pace. Return to your hotel this evening for a welcome meal.
Following breakfast depart Oristano for a half day tour of Bosa, a rainbow townscape of pastel houses cascading along the hillside. The highlight of today's tour is undoubtedly the 12th century Castello Malaspina, a hilltop castle that commands stunning panoramic vistas across the town and towards the palm shaded riverfront. You will also have the opportunity to inspect the ancient Nuaghe Antine, a cylindrical megalithic edifice and former defence tower dating back to the 15th century. After lunch, enjoy some free time before continuing on a scenic drive to the city of Sassari.
After breakfast, depart for one of Sardinia's most beautiful medieval cities, Alghero. Your morning tour of Alghero is centred around the picturesque centro storico, an enclave of cobbled lands and cafe-lined piazzas. A stop will be made at the Necropoli Anghelu Ruiu burial chambers, some of which still host traces of sculpted bullhorns symbolising a funeral deity. This afternoon, you have the option of boarding a boat to Grotta di Nettuno, where you will tour the cave network famed for its ethereal composition of mesmerising stalactites and stalagmites.
In the morning, catch your ferry to the mountainous Mediterranean island of Corsica, continuing to Porto Vecchio for the remainder of today at leisure.
Today depart for Calvi, a French commune whose imposing 15th century hilltop citadel overlooks the shimmering waters of a crescent bay. En route, stop for a sightseeing trip that'll take you into the heart of Corte, a mountain town whose striking fortress clings to the rock. Arrive in Calvi and encounter the island's spiritual heritage with a visit to Chapelle de Notre Dame de la Serra, an esteemed site of pilgrimage for over 500 years.
Enjoy a day within Calvi at leisure, alternatively undertake an optional excursion to the UNESCO recognised Scandola Nature Reserve. This coastal area exhibits a congregation of dramatic porphyritic rock formations that host a wide range of sea bird colonies, alongside a wealth of diverse marine life including dolphins.
This morning, pass Bonifacio's charming medieval houses, sun-bleached chapels and a glistening natural harbour, before catching the ferry back to Sardinia.
Today has been left at leisure to unwind within the picturesque city of Olbia. You could alternatively undertake a half day excursion to Costa Smeralda, an unspoilt stretch of coast lapped by crystalline waters.
Head into the village of Orgosolo, which resides in the heart of a vast mountainous region. During your visit, sample succulent local flavours at a lunch with the shepherds, which includes aged ricotta cheese, pork roasted on an open-air cooker and local wine. Following your lunch continue to the Sardinian capital of Cagliari.
Embark on a fascinating walking tour which includes a stop at the Torre dell'Elefante - one of only two Pisan towers - this soaring 14th century column exhibits a curiously paltry elephant statue. Admire Cagliari's graceful Cattedrale di Santa Maria, a cathedral that displays an eye catching Romanesque facade. Following the tour transfer to the airport, for your return flight back to the UK.
