Santa Cruz, Madeira

Santa Cruz

Located on Madeira's east coast a mere two kilometres from the airport, Santa Cruz is undoubtedly one of Madeira's most charming resorts owed to by its small yet colourful appearance, nestled between rolling hillsides and inviting ocean waters. Despite the laid-back ambience of Santa Cruz, those seeking a livelier spot will find Madeira's capital (Funchal), just 15 minutes up the road.

Those wanting an adventure can pick up an easy-going nature trail that will take you across a network of canals, under waterfalls and along mountainous routes edged with laurel trees.

Similar to much of Madeira, Santa Cruz has pebbled beaches with sun loungers and is backed by a pretty palm-shaded promenade with a wealth of wining and dining options.

Weather and Climate

The climate of Madeira is similar to that found around the Mediterranean or coastal California - Madeira has mild winters, and generally warm, sunny summers. The ocean moderates the climate so the island never suffers extreme heat or extreme cold. Winter months are slightly wetter - especially in mountain regions, however these spells only last a day or two at a time. In winter there is typically 5 - 6 hours of sunshine, and in Summer there can be up to 8.
