Cyprus welcomes millions of tourists each year from across Europe and beyond, who flock to the island to enjoy the endless sunny weather, delicious cuisine and historic cultural heritage. From the bright lights of Nicosia, to the historic streets and harbours of Paphos in the south, the island is brimming with awe-inspiring destinations and attractions that visitors return to time and again.

One of the best-loved cities of Cyprus is Paphos, already a UNESCO world heritage site, and as of 2017, a European Capital of Culture. The award was first conceived in 1985, with Athens becoming the first European city to earn a title. Designed to celebrate and promote the rich cultural history of cities across the continent and help promote a better sense of collective identity, the scheme has gone from strength to strength throughout the decades. As of 2017, no less than 40 cities have benefited from the scheme, which sees a year-long schedule of exciting events, exhibitions and attractions played out in the title-holding city. In more recent years, the European Capital of Culture has been celebrated for its success in driving development and economic growth for cities chosen for the scheme. As such, the potential for development and rejuvenation has become a key factor when deciding on the winning city for any given year.

In Paphos, preparations are well underway as the historic city looks forward to celebrating this impressive accolade and appointment as European Capital of Culture 2017. Not only will this award invigorate the tourism sector, locals too can benefit from the many exciting events and inspiring experiences planned for 2017. Both Paphos and Cyprus as a whole have long been a melting pot, bridging cultures from across Europe and beyond. Today, the multi-cultural communities who thrive across the city will be a the heart of the celebrations. Every square inch of Paphos will become a potential exhibition centre or display hall. Centuries-old streets and market squares will play host to open air events and cultural displays, while already established venues will offer up a busy schedule of attractions to draw in the crowds.

The Paphos Municipal Gallery will be open throughout the year, showcasing some of the best in historical art alongside more contemporary works, while the Paphos Archaeological Museum will come alive with new exhibits, offering unique insights into almost 10,000 years of history. Bringing together dynamic communities and cultures from East and West, 2017 promises to be a big year for Paphos. By celebrating the past and looking forward to the future, the European Capital of Culture 2017 will help drive development and pitch Paphos as a cultural hub of the continent; so it’s a very exciting time to plan a visit.
