Death by a Thousand Paper Cuts

Review by Darcette Toronto, Canada

Just got back from a week in a Mediterranean Honeymoon Oceanview Club Level Suite. This was the second trip to a Sandals resort and will be the last. I'm not going to list all of the minor irritations or this post would be pages long...

The property is beautiful and the beach is stunning. It's the service and attention to detail that really let this place down. The title of this review eludes to the fact that all of my complaints seem trivial but they add up to an experience that has killed Sandals for me. Here are some highlights and lowlights:

Room: Modern but much smaller than anticipated with not enough floor space anywhere to have a morning stretch. Balcony is the size of a post-stamp. The room was not bright and cheery but rather dark and very dimly lit - even with the curtains fully open, I never felt like I was waking up in the tropics with an ocean view. Housekeeping was a challenge as we always had to ask for towels, coffee and toiletries. Shower looks like it hasn't had a good scrub for years.

Food: Don't get room service. Just don't. Even coffee arrives luke-warm. Often there is simply no answer or the line is busy when trying to place an order. Kimonos and Soy were great. OK Coral was terrible and the buffet during carnival night was disgusting. Didn't eat at the Italian for dinner as it always looks like a brightly lit cafeteria with no atmosphere, not even light music. Candlelight dinner was the best and service was delightful but it cost an extra $US 200. Told we were only allowed to make 3 reservations in one trip. Food was pretty good at the Bayside but tables near the beach smell like sewage day and night.

Gym - Lots of equipment and weights but only one mat. Room with the treadmills and bicycles has no view and the system that enables them to have cable and programming capability has not been hooked up.

Spa - very basic and overpriced. No steam room, sauna or hydrotherapy circuit. The plunge pool outside was broken and full of filthy water the entire week.

Watersports - Didn't scuba dive this trip but enjoyed snorkeling, particularly that the guides acknowledge your previous excursions to ensure you don't visit the same reef twice. Was told that "swimming is not encouraged" in the bay because of the motorized vehicles - seriously. The dive shop will not loan a swimmer fins for this reason. The cordoned off swimming area is small and nowhere near the beach chairs with umbrellas - bewildering. Pools vary from the large boisterous "drinking" pool to the quiet pool with a bar that not once ever had an unreserved chair to the one we spent most of our time at that rarely has cocktail service. Don't bother looking for a towel after 3 pm - seems they are hoarded and rarely replenished.

Photo shop - It's a nice touch that photographers take pictures of you around the resort during your trip with the option to purchase them before you leave. I can't comment on this yet because the system was down on our last day so we haven't been able to view them yet.

Entertainment - again variable. Seems they are on a 3 or 4 day cycle so some of the evening games, bands and karaoke were repeated the same week. This is not a bad thing as long as you plan. However, it got tiresome quickly.

Overall, this vacation was worth about half what we paid for it. I'm not sure why Sandals has the good reputation that it seems to. You can get a lot more and pay a lot less elsewhere. I'm not sure what to think of the "no-tipping" policy. There are obvious advantages of guests not carrying around cash but a lot of the staff seem complacent, as if they have no reason to be service-oriented. On the other extreme, the whole "butler concept" has created an "us and them" mentality. I found the differentiation in service very elitist with those willing to pay extortionate amounts of money behaving like entitled brats while the rest of us seemed outcast. In a world moving toward equity and inclusion, this place seems to be moving in the wrong direction. Sandals needs to work on making all the restaurants good and all the service good. Now, there's an idea.

Second time at Sandals Antigua in six months

We travelled initially to Sandals Antigua in September 2021, our first holiday at the beginning of the end of COVID restrictions. The checks and procedures put in place to protect us and the Antiguan people was exemplary. We love the island and the people and overall have been four times...

We couldn't have been in better hands. Our return in April was post COVID and we returned with our dearest friends to celebrate many things. We had asked in September due to my mobility issues, if we could have the same ground floor walk out room and were told of course and a note was made. Imagine our disappointment to be in a different block and on the third floor albeit next to the lifts and with stunning ocean views it wasn't what we had specifically asked for. Maria from the loyalty team chatted to us as we relaxed in a cabana the next day and when we told her of this issue she arranged for us to be moved and although we were offered a ground floor room it was not a walk out so declined and stayed put. Maria is a lady who gets things done and was our holiday angel, if only we could have given her a halo. Another issue with cabanas. We wanted to share with our friends as we only see them a couple of times a year and if they had rented a cabana we would have had to shout to speak with them. They were not offered the drinks or food service we were and were ignored. The waiter was even rude to them. We didn't use the cabanas again and said we would even be willing to pay more for the four of us to be included and think Sandals need to address this issue. Our friend had just finished chemo treatment and needed to be out of the sun hence the need for a cabana. Sandals do something about this!!! Labor Day presented problems with drinks that tasted watered down at each bar but particularly the main pool bar. Henson deserves a mention for his wonderful cocktails. The food was excellent in every restaurant, my only disappointment was an over gelled Panna cotta, not a lot to complain about. The grill guys at OK Corrale were amazing and we made a point of telling them this. Ken at Barefoot hope you enjoyed Tennessee, great to meet you. Our fave restaurant. A small issue upon arrival too. No welcome cocktail of rum punch. When we asked we were told they had run out. What of rum??? On Antigua??? Seriously!!! Lame excuse and not the welcome home we expected... All in all we enjoyed our stay and would recommend the resort but we have stayed at several Excellence resorts and they knock Sandals out of the park. If only there was an Excellence in Antigua.....

Mixed Emotions

Review by Ellen G Glenville, New York

First off I will say the resort is absolutely beautiful. They keep it impeccably clean and the beach is absolutely beautiful. This was our first time here and this was for our honeymoon...

From the moment we got there we didn't feel like we were celebrating anything. My husband paid for the honeymoon package which was a complete fail. We were supposed to get champagne on arrival. Got nothing. Instead we were told to go get some lunch and hang out until our room was ready. When it was ready oh yay come to find out we were next to a couple with their 20 something year old kids. Are you kidding me? It wasn't a honeymoon suite which they advertised it as. The bathtub had a dirt ring around it (not impressed). During the week we were supposed to have a breakfast delivered which my husband had to call about or ask which seemed like a millions times. The day they finally delivered it was the day we were leaving. On the plus side though we did have the romantic dinner on the beach. That was fantastic. The food was amazing and our server was awesome. His service was amazing and he made sure that people didn't intrude on our time alone. We also did the sunset cruise and snorkle tours through Sandals. Totally awesome and had a blast. We enjoyed the food and we have no complaints there. I just hope that Sandals can work through the issues. It was a lovely property but next time I would book in the newer side of the resort.

Great Time

Review by 831TomSullivan Rio Rancho, New Mexico

This was our fifth Sandals and it was the best so far. The resort was incredibly beautiful, almost as much as the Antiguan people. Huge shout-out to our butlers, Jason, Kevin and Karen...

Thank you for taking care of us. And to Tiffany for the beautiful pictures. I highly recommend this resort. Everything about it was outstanding.
