Coconut House is awful at Nonsuch Bay Antigua

Review by Beachbums74 Niagara Falls, Canada

The owners of this property knew it was run down before we arrived. They didn’t check on their villa for years. The owner was there before we were and knew it needed repairs and new appliances, furniture and a new roof...

Instead of letting us know and offering us a chance to find different accommodations, he let us come to a disgraceful unit. The roof leaked and someone twisted their ankle. The appliances were old and filthy. The kitchen cabinets were falling apart. The bbq was so disgusting we tried to clean it and couldn’t so we had to bbq with tin foil on the grill just to cook our food. There is not enough furniture in the unit for the amount of people for dining together. People have to sit in different areas. The “dining table” is patio furniture. The pool is not well maintained and the beautiful garden in the description does not exist. The patio stones that are there are full of mold or broken. The few stones they have are all uneven. There is junk/ broken clay pots and cut down weeds left all over the prickly grass. The patio doors to the one bedroom do not close properly and blow open. The railing, electrical outlets and deck boards are all unsafe. The unit is not close to the resort amenities. It is a 15-20 min. walk up 2 very steep hills to get to any of the pools or the beach. The pools are small and only have a dozen lounge chairs. The supermarket that we were told was close to our unit is a little hotel convenience store with bread, milk and snacks. The grocery store is at least a $50 u.s taxi ride. The only complimentary amenity at the beach is a lounge chair. So you have to lug everything you need up the 2 steep hills with you. There are no windows in the unit with glass. They are just window openings covered with screens. When the resort has the fog truck come around it comes in and covers the entire unit. Then you need to wipe things down to get the film off of everything. Don't leave any food out on the counter otherwise that will be covered from the fog too. You also need bug spray for the kitchen. There are little bugs all over the counters. Make sure all your food is properly sealed or in the fridge/freezer. The garbage bins are directly across from the unit so watch out for the rodents when you take out your garbage.

The owner agreed to a partial refund if pictures is the villa were not posted. Still waiting for a refund so I am now posting the review and pictures. When they say the place has been renovated don’t believe them. They will show you pictures of a different villa than the one you will end up in.

Great Staff, but location needs a refresh...

Review by FJL1030

We stayed in the Beach Cottages which are old and dated. No doubt COVID has impacted the management's ability to upgrade its facilities. Tourism is the #1 business of Antigua and the island was closed for most of last year...

Our compressor in our room went out and so we moved the mattress to the living room to sleep under the fan. It was repaired the following day.

The staff are amazing, especially Andre who serves as concierge and seemingly several other roles. He noticed we had lost a hub cap on our rental car and instructed us where to go on the island to replace it to avoid high replacement fees at the car rental counter. At $450/night one would expect a bit more luxury.

Also, if you don't get the all inclusive package, do not eat onsite! We paid $75 USD for club soda, 6 wings ($36 USD), pasta and french fries! Needless to say we did not eat there again:-)

Nonsuch nonsense

Review by 727ellei

Skeleton staff, remote location, charged for everything including room service (5$) you don’t have a choice as there is never room in the only restaurant of the adjoining hotel. The food is mediocre and is very pricey, but it’s the only option for dinner unless you rent a car or hire a taxi to go to the nearest restaurant which is 30 mins away. No breakfast option at all and lunch is a choice of 3 paninis at the pool bar (18$)

There is always a smell of sulphur in the air ( what is that about?), only YouTube and your own Netflix available and that’s always buffering as Internet is sketchy, can’t use your iPad and phone at the same time, the accommodation is dated and in dire need of a refurbishment.

Everyone is out to milk the situation including the Doctor for the COVID return test (75$) charges for the test and for the call out (38$) all his clients are call out!! There is no ATM around so arm yourself with cash to pay for taxi, massage, Tours and of course the doctor.

Very disappointed, only positive is the staff, that are smiling and try to be helpful, when you can get hold of one, as no one answers the phone before 10 am and after 4.30pm, don’t even try to get someone on the weekends. Would really avoid if at all possible, unfortunate as it could be a nice place under the right management.

Lovely Residences, in very scenic gardens but a car is a must

Review by Michelle Ba B

The residences are spacious, very comfortable and well equipped. We had a lovely view of the sea and many palm trees from our veranda. The bed was huge and very comfortable, with air conditioning in the bedroom, the jacuzzi bath was wonderful...

Fortunately we had hired a car which we picked up at the airport as the restaurant and bar was closed at the resort when we arrived due to it being low season. Nonsuch Bay is situated out of the way so taxi's or hiring a car is a must, the best beaches are situated along the south and west of the island so we went out to explore everyday. The pools at Nonsuch Bay were lovely and warm, the beach is clean and well looked after but the sea wasn't great for swimming in. During the second half of our stay they did open a bar where the infinity pool is, it was only open until 4:30pm and most days we got back in after that time. One panini and one veggie wrap cost us $50 US dollars when you included the tax and two cocktails cost $40 US dollars so we didn't use the pool bar much. due to it being pricey. We were given the days when we would get our room cleaned and linen changed, unfortunately we got missed for our second clean but they did come and bring us some clean towels when we informed them of this. The tree frogs made a lot of noise at night so if you are a light sleeper it might be worthwhile bringing some earplugs All the staff we came across were very friendly and we liked this resort a lot as we were pretty much left to ourselves, however we found having a car was essential. Much sure you download Antigua on google maps as road signs are non existent but as the island is relatively small you soon learn your way around with landmarks, just mind the potholes!!

Great if you want to be away from it all ... but a bit odd

Review by VictoriaC209 London, United Kingdom

We booked Nonsuch thru British Airways using AVIOS points, I feel that its was all rather misleading. We knew we had a room only, thats fine happy to walk out and find breakfast nearby..... but you can't as the hotel is so remote! We were situated in a large one bed villa in the 'family " section of the resort ( we are a couple in our 50's although we still think we are in our 30's!)

We had no idea it was " self catering" and on arrival had nothing but a packet of almonds to eat. I expected that the resort was a hotel not self catering...

Due to Covid and no fault whatsoever of the hotel - everything was closed apart from the couples area at The Escape - all meals were served here as well as a small bar area and a pool. To get to The Escape you could either walk, a good 15/ 20 mins up a very steep hill or call a car service to collect you. Therefore we ate breakfast in the restaurant every day, it was actually very nice and I would recommend the eggs Benedict which became my staple every morning. We skipped lunch most days but did enjoy one very tasty dinner of Lobster Thermidor. There was no resort information in the room, no maps of the resort, not even a bottle of water in the fridge on arrival. The resort is very remote, a 14 minute drive down to Half Moon Bay will bring you to a beach shack serving cocktails, beers, but opening times were sporadic. We had heard they did a very good lobster roll but with no opening times and limited info we never actually got to taste it. A car is VERY necessary here, even the taxi driver from the airport turned up his nose when we said Nonsuch Resort in Freetown.

Although there are a number of swimming pools on the resort the only one with drinks/ food service is at The Escape so everyone from the hotel gravitated to this pool which was a shames the other pool lay empty. I appreciate we are in the middle of a pandemic but the facilities need to be made more customer friendly. If you did go another pool and called up for drinks to be brought to a different pool they charged you $5 for the pleasure, thats non sense!

The villa we had was very nice, lovely four poster style bed, huge walk in closet, kitchen with American fridge freezer, although badly equipped not even a bottle open! terrace over looking the sea, nice bathroom, although the shower stall was tiny. All very nice but far too big for what we wanted.

All the staff were very helpful, very professional and friendly and are a credit to their employers.

The Green Island tour is great and we really enjoyed time on this lovely little island, so much so we wanted to visit again on our last full day only to be told it was the boat mans day off - no information about this posted anywhere in the hotel. Should you do the tour I would recommend going on the early boat take a picnic and walk thru the bush onto the other side of the island to a beautiful and rather private beach, this was our plan.... but it never materialised.

If you want a very away from it all experience with no other dining options in the vicinity this is the place for you, if you want to be able to trot out at night and go to other bars or restaurants without driving the awful pot holed roads with no road signs 40 mins to English Harbour then think again.

Maybe I did not do my home work well enough on this one.
