Christ Church, Christ Church

Christ Church

Christ Church is a large parish located on the south-west coast of Barbados and is every bit as exotic as you’d hoped it would be.

From the stunning coasts to the lively tourist area of Saint Lawrence Gap, you’ll find plenty to do in this colourful and dynamic resort.

When to go

The driest and least humid months are January through to April. Hurricane season is officially listed as June to November, but most major storms occur between August and October. For this reason, smaller crowds and lower prices can be enjoyed, if you’re prepared to take the chance.

For dry weather coupled with crowds that are there, but beginning to disintegrate, April is probably your best option.

Top Attractions

The hustling, bustling Saint Lawrence Gap is the liveliest area of the resort, both day and night. In the daytime, you can take advantage of the incredible snorkelling opportunities on offer. And by night, the multitude of bars and restaurants provide a whole host of options.

For something completely out of the ordinary, the Globe Drive-in cinema is a perfect way to spend a romantic evening with a great film under the stars.

Beaches

There are many beaches within Christ Church, including the picturesque and lively Dover Beach and Accra Beach. But the hidden gem that is Miami Beach is nothing like the grandiose stateside beach it borrows its name from. Secluded and intimate, it provides tranquil spots to take a dip and a backdrop of greenery that’s just perfect for picnics.

Dining

For the ultimate Caribbean experience, you simply have to try Oistins Fish Fry. Among informal surroundings, you’ll be able to enjoy freshly caught seafood prepared to local cuisine traditions.

Entertainment

The main nightlife scene found anywhere on the island is waiting for you at Saint Lawrence Gap and is naturally the liveliest area of the whole resort. Sometimes referred to as ‘The Gap,’ it is a 1.5km stretch of bars, inns, clubs and resorts that attracts locals as well as tourists, which is always a good indication.

Culture

Grantley Adams International Airport offers a rare sight indeed, as it’s one of the only places in the world where you can see, and even board, a concorde after its retirement, at the Concorde Experience. Heading a short trek away from Christ Church, the old market town of Oistins is one of the island’s biggest attractions.

Adventure and Sports

There is an excellent course at Barbados Golf Club, or the small 9-hole course at Rockley Golf Club, which also has a restaurant and bar within the club house. If you find yourself in that neck of the woods, Rockley beach has been known to have good surfing action, at times.

And not forgetting the snorkelling and other water activities to be found at ‘The Gap’.

Getting around

There are public services which operate in Christ Church, and it’s possible to get almost anywhere on the island using the public bus. The popular tourist areas will also have plenty of taxis that should be easy to find. And there’s some good riding to be had if you wish to avoid any traffic issues by hiring a bike.
