The Sandpiper

Barbados, Caribbean
St James

The Sandpiper is discreetly one of the most awarded luxury hotels in Barbados, surrounded by lush gardens filled with tropical flora, creating an atmosphere of ultimate privacy. The hotel is situated on a beautiful sandy beach on the West Coast, gently lapped by turquoise waters and bordered by a tree shaded wooden deck. Much of the Sandpiper's charm and style are attributed to Wayne and Karen Capaldi who run it with meticulous attention to detail without sacrificing the relaxed manner of the Caribbean. Combined with their staff's enthusiasm for pampering their guests, this results in many guests returning year after year.

Due to the surrounding area and the number of steps around the hotel, it may not be suitable for those with mobility difficulties.

Fabulous time at The Sandpiper

Review by Marubenjem Elstree, United Kingdom

We just returned from our first Covid era holiday - two glorious weeks at the Sandpiper. We absolutely loved it. It’s really perfect in every way...

First off, we are not keen on sprawling resorts - who wants to walk a million miles from the room to breakfast, or to the beach or pool? Not us. The Sandpiper is small and intimate, boutiquey and upmarket, yet friendly, accessible and totally charming. The buffet breakfasts are to die for - certainly no need for lunch. The whole dining/bar area is beautifully laid out. There is live entertainment most evenings. And the staff are all wonderful. I can’t remember the names of everyone we met, but they are all friendly, courteous and helpful, from Olenda and the other staff on reception, to Wyatt and the other concierge guys, to Rose, Jamal, David, Mandy, Shawn, Anthony and so many others at breakfast, and not forgetting Harold and all the guys helping on the bar, the deckchair guys and the gardeners. And a quick word to the chamber maid who did such a stellar service for us each day in our room too. Really everyone was superb. I’m just sorry I don’t recall everyone’s names. I enjoy scuba diving and want to make a quick mention to the friendly and expert guys at High Tide, Edwin, Lennie and Rohan. Thanks for some great and memorable dives. If you haven’t been to the West side of Barbados before, everything is spread along a strip of 6 or 7 miles, with the Sandpiper well located more or less in the middle of everything. Make sure you jump on the crazy buses that go up and down between Bridgetown and Speightstown to save yourself a fortune in taxis. Book the main restaurants ahead of your trip to avoid disappointment. We particularly liked Lone Star, The Sea Shed and La Cabane. All in all a fabulous trip. We were really sorry to leave. It was good until an unpleasant incidednt

Review by rug_nar2021

My partner and I stayed here for 2 weeks. Close to Holetown, is next to a very nice beach with corals close to the shore, great breakfast and overall level of service. A limited number of TV's available upon request. Would give it 5*s had the communication from reception etc. been better in the case of a false positive result I received on a lateral flow test towards the end of our stay...

The manager, Mr Croney, did come to check the situation upon the initial false positive though did not seem very accommodating. It took us 1+ hours to get the menu for some dinner that night. Next day, I explicitly confirmed with the reception about my PCR being negative as well as requested my partener's result confirmation sent via email. (until then it was communicated to us by the reception staff and doctor verbally). I was assured all is fine and this will be sorted. Instead, the reception informed the restaurant to not let us in for breakfast (???) which required further sorting. It also required multiple follow ups thought the day to get that test confirmation via email. All while trying to catch up on the plans missed the day before due to quarantine. - all could have been avoided with proper communication and management. Outside of this event, the experience was nice even if we found it a bit overpriced.

Stunning paradise with service to match

Review by DRM888 London, United Kingdom

My partner and I stayed at The Sandpiper for 5 nights in September, and we were blown away at every turn. The service was impeccible. Nothing was ever too much trouble...

The staff to guest ratio was very high - you were never more than 15 seconds away from the most helpful people you'll meet. The rooms were lovely, and having room service at no additional cost is a lovely touch. Breakfast on our balcony was a real treat. The beach is stunning - crystal clear, calm, warm water and lots of snorkelling in the area. Everything was much better than the busier south of the island. The restaurants nearby are beautiful and the property as a whole is very polished and refined. Our only negatives were that the stairs get slippy when it rains, and the price of the food in the themed nights are quite steep unless you go ALL OUT and eat loads! Do note, the dress code in the restaurant is no sandals/flip flops/sliders, and guests get really quite dressed up, so if you want something more chilled and relaxed - opt for room service or go for a walk to another local restaurant.

We loved our stay and it has set the bar very, very high for future travelling. Thank you, Sandpiper.

7 star service at The Sandpiper Holetown

Review by 575nicolaj Liverpool, United Kingdom

Me and my daughter have just returned from this amazing hotel and our first visit to Barbados. We have been truly spoilt and did not want to leave after 8 nights here. I think no matter how long we would have stayed for we would not have wanted to leave...

Given all what is going on with Covid our transition from landing in Barbados to arriving at the hotel was fantastic. We booked the premium service which included fast track service with our own host who guided us through and we got our tests very quickly and then escorted us to our driver Desmond. I would definitely recommend this. Desmond looked after us for the whole of our time at the sandpiper and advised us of places to visit and made sure we was safe at all times. He could not have done more for us he was a gem. On arrival at the hotel we was given a complimentary drink and we then had to wait for our Covid results which arrived about 12 hours later. During this time we could eat at the hotel but not go outside or go on the beach. The food was amazing in the hotel and the staff were exceptional in the bar and restaurant namely Jerome the bar supervisor Sachin aka Chris Brown, Jamal and Shawn and in the restaurant true gentlemen in David, Dave and Kyle. Every morning victor sorted our beds on the beach and was very accommodating along with the famous Harold from Harolds Bar. The queen of the hotel is the lovely Eulene who delivers impeccable service and always with a smile. The beauty of this small hotel is its location and the grounds which are truly amazing. Small animals can be seen running round with a small stream running through the grounds with all kinds of fish in. With 2 pools and a lovely beach area with the most amazing blue water and soft sand this is truly heaven. The rooms are very traditional with white company products and a very comfortable bed. Having stayed in some amazing hotels it is the first time I have ever known the general manager to introduce himself to his guests. I was very impressed with Russell and it made our stay even more impressive. He had dinner one night with guests at the hotel. There was live music on most nights which was a great touch. Wednesday night is cocktail night we’re rum punches are served complimentary along with some snacks. What made this hotel even more amazing is the guests. We met some lovely people mainly cindy and Paul from Connecticut who have been regulars for 12 years but all the guests said hello to each other and chatted. The sandpiper has a really warm family feel and the fact that the majority of the staff have worked there for years the lady on the pastries and fruit section has been there for 45 years Jerome has been there for 14 years says a lot about this hotel. I think the owner is a regular visitor at the hotel which again says a lot even though I did not get to meet him. Water sports are available from jet skis to paddle boards to boat trips and Bob is a very helpful guy. I know this is a particularly long review but I could go on forever about the sandpiper. My final word is we cannot wait to go back. Thank you all for an amazing stay and a final thankyou to the girls on reception Terry Ann and Natalie for all your help.

So good we're going back in 2 weeks!

Review by Steph1975_12 Portsmouth, United Kingdom

We spent 12 nights at The Sandpiper shortly after it went on to the UK green travel list. Quite simply one of the best hotels I've ever stayed at and as someone who has remained loyal to the Far East for previous holidays, I am very much a Barbados convert now! A huge reason for this is the Sandpiper, it's ambience and its incredible staff who can't do enough for you! We stayed in Suite 21 which is beautiful and right on the beach. We enjoyed lots of fabulous food at the hotel and I was a very frequent visitor to the fabulous spa ( detox massage a dream )...

Harold's Bar is brilliant and as it was right underneath our Suite, we enjoyed lovely lazy lunches, sundowners and nightcaps looking out over the Caribbean Sea 🌊 . We took advantage of the free speedboat taxi to visit the fantastic Seashed Beach Club and arranged to swim with turtles through the hotel's watersports team. If you go and this is something you'd like to do, definitely book to go with Michael. He's wonderful, knowledgeable and great fun! During our stay, the first hurricane Barbados has had in 60 odd years hit the island. The hotel really looked after us, made sure we were safe and it was certainly a unique holiday experience! The jewel in the Crown at The Sandpiper is the staff. Everyone clearly truly values their job and take huge pride in doing everything they can to enhance your stay and everyone we spoke with had been working there for many years. If you want an ultra-modern 5 star with the latest tech and bling, the Sandpiper is probably not for you and I'd suggest Sandy Lane. The Sandpiper is peaceful, elegant and colonial. We met some fantastic people, most of whom had visited many times before. Regular visitors to this hotel clearly value the understated luxury and their commitment to outstanding service and quality.
