Not 4* service, at very best 3*

This my first ever review and was so incensed and annoyed that I felt this had to be done. I looked forward to the holiday after staying at its sister hotel, Verandah Resort and Spa in Antigua for a wedding 9 years previous This was my wife's and I's Golden Wedding celebration holiday, taking with us our immediate family comprising 6 adults and 4 children ( 2x6 year olds and 2x4 year olds) I will make this saga brief. Initial reception was slow. while there was a queue of about 6 parties waiting to be dealt with, 3 members of reception dealt with the newcomers constantly moving away and assisting each other, no problem, but a further 3 members of reception just stood around looking bored. This seemed a big resort...

When asked for a map to find my way around, I was given a strange look as if I was asking for the moon. The room was nice but very tired. the balcony with ocean view was there if you strained your neck on the balcony much smaller than a cruise shop balcony. We were on the top floor, of three, the steps were not a problem as such but they appeared to be of unequal step height which many us very aware of using them. Later one of our party arranged for a change of room for us on the ground floor, overlooking the pools, room 701. Recently renovated was very nice apart from the shower screen being too small and creating a lake in the bathroom whenever the shower was used, and the door to the veranda not closing but held fast with a bolt! The Restaurants, what a tale. Simply put, opening time was 6pm but that meant waiting staff appeared then. If you booked for that time you waited for 10-15 minutes to be shown to your table, a further 15-20 minutes to order etc. It was 75 minutes before being fed! Our story was that the two 4 year olds were asleep most times. Several times we left prior to being served. Staff seemed to keep to their own duties, there was no team spirit. When one staff member did their tasks there was no thought to, say, take used plates away or glasses. Menus were repeated every couple of days and became boring although good. For two nights during our 14 night stay the breakfast restaurant opened as a buffet, which was ideal for our situation. Unfortunately, as you needed to book your restaurants in advance and the opening of the evening buffet was not advertised, it was not used extensively and, with much wasted food, closed. One of the better features was the coffee shop, opened from dawn to late where you could for a good ground coffee. Unfortunately they ran out of coffee twice over the 14 nights, not for a short time, once was 3 days and once for 2 days, although was told instant was available! The mini disco was a feature looked forward to by the children but was non-existent. Two good points. The beach staff was excellent with the children both "big" and small. The "singing" chef at lunch time gave everyone a laugh and cheered up all ( a singing equivalent to Les Dawson piano playing). Although the facilities say 4*, service, general attitude and maintenance of facilities would, at a push, be 2+* I heard that the hotel had been taken over and will convert the resort to an Adults Only hotel. It transpired that new management appear to access the hotel and minor changes started to appear. Good luck to you, repeat business will be hard to come by and an Adults Only resort will be more critic than the current cliental.

Sad state of affairs.

Review by Stefan S Princes Town

I was at the resort between the 15th April to the 18th April 2022. And compared to past visits, this was purely abhorent.

The buffet breakfast is amazing...

No complaints. But the lunch and dinner menus and options need to be improved. The food was not satisfying at all. And it was the same menu day in day out. Bring back the buffet style.

The room reservation was messed up but luckily it was sorted out. However the room was dated and needs repairs.

I must commend Restaurant Manager Ms. Val-Donna. She is truly amazing. The experiences with her were nothing short of spectacularly delightful. This was the only saving grace on this trip.

The front desk needs more staff. How does it make sense to have one or 2 persons there when so many people come to the counter. And when we checked out the credit card used was blocked and we needed to call the resort to unblock it. Incompetence at its finest.

Overall, I firmly believe that St. James Morgan Bay has fallen from grace and needs to return to its former luster. Until that happens, I will not be returning to the resort.

Poor food

Review by hilaryc790 Bromley, United Kingdom

Just coming to the end of our holiday at St James and we’re really disappointed. Most of the resort is ok , staff very pleasant, room ok, beach ok but as other people have reviewed the restaurant situation is very poor. Our first night we were sent to the buffet restaurant which was fine...

After that we had to book our “choice” but most nights there were only 2 open of the 6 on the website. Treetops and Morgan Pier are fine but we’ve had 2 disastrous meals in Bambou. Le Jardin always appears to be open but you have to pay extra to eat there! The explanation is that the place only has 200 visitors this week. True … it’s very quiet, you could say pretty dead! Especially in the evenings. The resort has been taken over .. my advice wait until they’ve sorted everything out before staying here.

Lower Your Expectations and Enjoy!

The whole is greater than the sum of its parts.. an often quoted expression and one that couldn’t better fit St James Club, Morgan Bay. If your expecting a 5* resort with exemplary service, then go for Sugar Beach and expect to pay £000’s more...

St James Club is perfectly pitched at those with lesser expectations and where you can take the rough with the smooth. And there’s plenty of smooth… if you’re lucky enough to stay in one of the ocean front rooms, then you’ll have a wonderfully comfortable super king bed with views to die for and the sound of lapping shores as you nod off. The Morgan Pier restaurant is as good a location to eat as anywhere, with its over the water location and a wonderful sea breeze keeping everything cool. The beach and alls it’s delights is a great place to people watch and enjoy in seeing your kids pursue a variety of activities. The staff are typically friendly, helpful and full of smiles. But there is a bit of rough that you simply cannot avoid and it’s up to you whether you allow it to be a showstopper. Such as the older rooms, which are mostly located mid- resort, and which are in desperate need of a revamp. The A/C is unreliable, the double beds, although comfortable, are small and overall, and simply speaking, these rooms are just tired and do not represent value for money. Parts of the resort follow this theme and are just in need of some TLC and so if overly critical, can disappoint. I would love to see the removal of the steel fence atop with barbwire from the perimeter edge, as it really doesn’t provide any additional security and frankly, looks terrible. The music that is pumped around the resort is mostly hardcore reggae, even at brekkie, and they need to change this. Great to get Caribbean beats at times, but please play cooler chill out tunes which will better compliment the overall ambition of a tropical holiday. St James Club is a big resort and for the most part is a lovely space to be in. The staff, as is so often said, can make a holiday and more often than not, they are terrific here. Moreover, if you are lucky enough, as we did, to meet great, great fellow holiday-goers, then most of the niggles disappear and with the all-inclusive nature of this resort, you will undoubtedly have a blast. So my advise would be to lessen your expectations, relax, sip a rum or two and soak it all up in true Caribbean style. St James Club - thanks for having us!

PS - you absolutely must do the Joy Cruise and hopefully you’ll experience the delights of Joy’s son, Vaughan, who will host what will be without doubt, one of your holiday highlights. An absolute blast hosted by a natural stand up and where you get to see some of this beautiful islands gorgeous highlights eg Marigot Bay, the mud baths, the magnificent Anse des Pitons and the stunning Sugar Beach (with Uber classy Sugar Beach Resort), and the obligatory rum drinking return home watching the miraculous flying fish!

Old and Dated

Review by emailtheberrys Fort Myers, Florida

Been to other Elite Island Resorts, this is not the same standard. The resort is dated and in need of renovation. The staff is kind and very attentive...

Food and drink quality is subpar considering the price of the resort. Rooms are cleaned every other day, and today we were missed, so no clean towels. This is a family resort, not as secluded for couples as their other properties. Could be a beautiful resort with the right attention.
