Another wonderful time staying with Pambos and Eleni at the Mariella Hotel in Polis. We were a little earlier this year and delighted to find that business had picked up so well after the post-Covid lull, and it was wonderful to meet up with so many regulars who had been even more often than us (this was only our seventh time!) and to meet first-timers enjoying themselves. It was an especially hot time, the last days of September, so the sun-beds and pools were busy during the day and we were once again delighted that the Mariella attracts so many nice people who know how to behave, keeping the bar area busy of an evening without any needless music to disturb everyone else (moms with children seemed especially appreciative of this). We were ‘at home’ in the B block, and, as always, enjoyed having rapid hot water in the shower, and a regular supply of filtered drinking water in the kitchenette—a luxury not found in most four and five star hotels that want to make a profit selling you bottled water! Given how hot it was, it was great to have clean sheets and pillow-cases every other day along with fresh bath- and hand-towels. We tend to be late risers, so sometimes got in the way of the cleaners who wanted to sweep and mop the floors every morning but they kindly laughed off our lazy habits. Polis is one of the last low-key places that we know of for a relaxing break near a beach (our favorite will always be the ‘campsite’ which is less hectic that the Latzi area) and with so many good places to eat in the evening when the sun goes down. There are more expensive places to stay, but the Mariella remains the best deal in town. Our only complaint is that we couldn’t stay longer, but will be back as soon as we can.
First time in Cyprus - arrived at this hotel towards the latter half of September, and absolutely loved it. We stayed in a one bed apartment which was surprisingly spacious. Yes it was a little dated but exceptionally clean - bedding and towels changed every couple of days and the room cleaned every day. The location was amazing, everything on your doorstep . Also 2 pools so plenty of sun beds for all. The owner Pambos was lovely always extremely friendly and nothing was too much trouble. All in all a good value hotel - so glad we chose this for our stay.
We booked the hotel largely on the basis of the trip advisor reviews which are mostly very good, however this wasn’t our experience. The hotel is dated which was expected, but basic repairs just aren’t being done. The shower was like standing under a leaking gutter, a simple job of replacing the head would have fixed it, we did ask but wasn’t done. No plug to wash dishes in the sink, one pillow each, no hand towel. Cracked tiles around the pool area which my partner split his toe open on, I asked for a plaster and they had none, infact the first aid box looked like it hadn’t been looked at since the 70’s. We told our rep about this and after that we got a very cold reception from the owners, not so much as a goodbye on departure. But We never received the warm welcome others talk of. We didn’t use the hotel bar on an evening as it lacked any life, no music or atmosphere and during the day you have to search the hotel to find someone to serve you. We paid for the air con which woke us up everyday as it sounded like a tractor was ploughing through the room. Polis is a lovely area and I will be coming back but not to the Mariela.
We usually stay in a basic room but this was shabby, run down and needed a deep clean.
We had all the basic facilities we needed - such as a couple of mugs, bowls (although one was very dirty), plates etc.
We opened the cupboard to get extra pillows and that smelt a bit, but the pillows were OK once they had aired.
Although someone came in and cleaned most days it is a surface clean. Someone needs to get in there with a scrubbing brush.
Small things that could have been done to maintain: Tack the material under bed back up Fix the foot on the stool back on Give the window a good clean to remove the black mould Stick vanneer back on furniture where it is coming off
The wardrobe - rail not high enough to hang dresses, they trailed on the bottom of the wardrobe.
Even when workmen did drilling around the property, bits of plaster and dust were left on the floor for you to walk through.
The hotel is near to the lovely square and we had a nice holiday. We would go back to Polis but not to this hotel and we wouldn't recommend.
People mention a warm welcome, and whilst we don't sit in the bar, or need much service etc, I wouldn't describe the welcome as "warm". Nothing particularly wrong with the welcome, but it was short as we were handed our keys and pointed to our room.
We have just got back from 11 lovely days at the Mariela, we have been many times and each time we have had no complaints. A spacious apartment, cleaned every day clean towels and bedding every other day. A short walk to the restaurants and bar. A nice walk to the beach. We had breakfast which was worth what you paid. The owners are lovely people who nothing is to much trouble. We have all ready booked to go back.
