Elounda ilion

Crete

Situated in a quiet hillside position, the modern Hotel Elounda Ilion boasts exceptional panoramic views over the bay of Elounda on the popular holiday island of Crete. It combines traditional architecture with a minimalist style, a contemporary design and cosy rooms. The hotel offers an elegant pool area with wood-decked terrace and sweeping views; a small rocky beach is about 150 metres away from the hotel. The next sandy beach and the village of Elounda can be found within walking distance. An ideal place for guests looking for peace and tranquillity under the Mediterranean sun.

Due to the surrounding area and the number of steps around the hotel, it may not be suitable for those with mobility difficulties.

Brilliant Stay

Arrived very late at night. Fortunately we had seen a previous review which mentioned phone on left wall just inside entrance to contact reception for assistance with luggage receptionist came and collected us booked us in fed us then took our cases to our room. When we woke the view was spectacular...

Breakfast and evening meal were buffet and all the dining room staff are lovely. Choice was good for size of hotel and salads very fresh. There is a supermarket to the left outside the hotel which has decent stock. Pool bar was friendly service from Vasilikas and evening bar manned by Simos was great. Loved the place so much have now changed our next year's holiday to here and can't wait to return. Thank you too to all the reception staff nothing is too much trouble.

Very poor

I stayed here from 21/9 - 28/9/2021 and I have to say I’ve never been so disappointed. After a 4 and half hour flight and 2 hour bus journey we had to climb a steep hill and was given a very dry sandwich and crisp with a bottle of water before going to our room. The room was ok but the bathroom was not...

There was huge cracks in the tiles the toilet didn’t work and I had to ask for the shower head to be changed as it was extremely dirty. The bed was so hard I would rather have slept on the sun lounger. Although the breakfast was passable the evening meal was not. From 19.30 - 21.30 but by 8.30 there was not much left and nothing else being brought out. The food was barely warm and tasteless. Several times we ate out. There are some good points. The staff in restaurant and housekeeping were very nice, friendly and helpful. The older female receptionist however was not. Then we have the pool snack bar. The food served here was absolutely delicious and just a shame they didn’t have the same chef in the restaurant. Vasiliki the girl that works in the snack bar always smiling and delivered excellent customer service. I liked the pool. Definitely not a 3*+.

Room with a view

Review by 296JulieD South Cave, United Kingdom

We visited the Ilion in September, our first holiday abroad post Covid. The hotel was impeccably clean with the room cleaned thoroughly daily and fresh linen regularly. The breakfast was buffet style, with disposable gloves provided at each sitting, to be used when dishing up food - masks had to be worn when in inside communal areas...

Food was wonderful with a good selection. The staff where friendly and helpful with the reception manned 24 hours. The hotel is on a hill with some rooms a decent climb - not suitable for those with walking difficulties. The bungalows where lower down and easier to access. The view from our room was beautiful- fantastic sea view! The walk to Elounda took about 20 minutes but was downhill - we enjoyed the walk back but was uphill although not a steep hill. Definitely recommend!!

peaceful & relaxing

Review by Hayley030267 Durham, United Kingdom

This hotel was very peaceful and relaxing but we were there out of school holidays, if the hotel was full it could be a different story altogether. The pool is a good size for 10 people cooling down but not for more than 3 families at any one time! Set on a hillside amongst beautiful gardens, with views from the pool, large sun terrace and I'd say most of the rooms as they all seemed to be facing the sea. I wouldn't recommend this hotel if you have mobility issues or if you didn't have a energy levels to walk 10 mins uphill! It is also a 35-45 mins walk to Elounda town centre where you will have the bars, restaurant and tavernas along with nearest public beach and the harbour/port...

Unless you are planning half board and spending most of your time around the hotel I would suggest a car. Don't rent your car via reception (280 Euros), turn left out the Hotel gates and walk 5 mins to Elounda Car rental found next door to a small supermarket on your left. 150 Euros for 7 days they drop off and collect at the hotel. Rooms were very spacious and immaculately clean with towels and linen changed every other day. Beds a little on the hard/uncomfortable side. Breakfast was perfectly fine with plenty of fresh fruit greek yogurt, ham & cheese, fresh baked bread and small pastries. No live cooking and only a choice of hard boiled or fried eggs, the omelette choice a couple of times a week was solid rubbery offering & not edible in my opinion. Plenty tea & coffee from a machine but the grapefruit & orange juice wasn't fresh, more like very weak cordial, which was ok! We were planning on B&B but it was a marginal difference for HB so we thought it would be good to have the option to alternate with what turned out to be fabulous tavernas in the area. Dinner was ok but not exceptional. Always a fantastic salad bar with one of the nicest Greek Salads I have had, the feta was creamy, tomatoes fresh and sweet. Again fresh baked bread, a different soup each night which was fine. The evening meal was slightly let down by the hot options. Again no live cooking and the food was was only ever barely warm and tasted as if it had been made and kept warm for ages. Some choices were better than others but certainly not the standard of fresh cooked in a restaurant or taverna. It was a shame because the food served from the pool bar during the day was 100% better. Freshly cooked, hot and very tasty. If the hotel had a courtesy bus maybe to and from the town, it would help those who prefer not to drive or walk to the beach and bars. there are taxis but the cost could mount up at about 16 euros round trip! As a footnote they were going to charge 30 Euros to keep our room for an evening departure, even though we didn't arrive till after midnight on our first day!!!! We didn't bother as we had the room til noon and there is a showers room with shower gel in the pool toilets, and if you need a hairdryer the beautiful toilets in reception have a hairdryer fitted. So after a day by the pool, long lunch and a quick shower and change we were relaxed for our transfer at 7pm.
