- Gouves Bay Hotel

The hotel is located on the main coastal road of northern Crete, just 20 min from Heraklion airport. It is ideal for a quiet relaxing holiday. This small and compact resort is both welcoming and friendly. Gouves is connected to Heraklion, the capital city, by regular bus service every 30 minutes. Also Hersonissos is in the same vicinity (only 10 min by bus).
The hotel-resort is situated close to the sea and a small church combines colorful atmosphere, nightlife and the magic of the blue crystal clear sea. The hotel offers rooms with balcony with views either to the pool, the sea, the mountain or the garden.
All rooms are equipped with telephone, Satellite T.V, music channels, refrigerator, hair dryer, bath or shower, air-conditioning and safe boxes both available with extra charge.
Due to the surrounding area and the number of steps around the hotel, it may not be suitable for those with mobility difficulties.
Pool was dirty on arrival - noticeably green! Turned my daughters pink bikini green - and another family we spoke to had the same issue - pictures included of how it was on arrival and last day comparison! Lifeguard was great - intereacted and talked to my children which was nice! We used the hotel mainly as a base the first couple of days so noticed after a couple of days the pool was clean. As stated in other reviews sometimes the smell in the room was unpleasant, other than that the rooms were fine. Not many sunbeds but we never had issues getting one when we wanted to. Food on offer was good, as a family of 4 we all found something to eat each meal we went in. All inclusive alcohol drinks were not the best in my opinion, but thats down to personal taste - i ended up drinking Pepsi the whole holiday after trying every cocktail and not liking them. Bar staff friendly. Didn't see much of the entertainment, live band was good. Didn't see much entertainment round the pool for kids in the day which was disappointing. All in all found the hotel ok definitely not a 4*
The hotel is clean and comfortable enough, just not quite as advertised, there are a few niggles like the beach, if you want a sandy beach with loungers and umbrellas you have to walk down the road, it is only a five minute walk to the nearest which is small and really good, but not just outside, and the pictures of the rooms must be from the newest part because our room doesn’t look like that, but it is comfortable so I can’t complain, the staff are amazing and exemplary! They are so friendly and helpful and polite, they truly make the whole experience worth it, and there’s a few cats around and we had a cute little hedgehog that visited our patio that my youngest called Timothy
Rooms are terrible, they are dirty and in need of a complete renovation. The toilet is too close to sink so you need to sit sideways!! Towels are grey and old. Spa ….. well it’s a couple of beds in a wooden shed behind the pool with curtains for privacy. Food is nice but was only there for one night, which honestly, was enough! All inclusive finishes at 11pm and water has to be paid for. The lift is scary, clunks and creaks and is very old 😬
Great place lots of space for sunbathing either round the pool or on the grassed area, food plenty of choice, salads, pasta, fish chicken ,pork don't expect it to be very hot as it's a buffet but breakfast, lunch and evening meal with drinks beer, wine, fizzy drinks was great.Rooms always cleaned as was the hotel always spotless also parking if you have a car.
Good points: the hotel staff are 100% what make up this hotel. They're lovely! Friendly and accomodating. I should have noted the 2 receptionists who were so so soo helpful for us and incredibly knowledgeable with helping up source a bigger hire car than the usual 5 seater that the hotel offer. The hotel was small but clean and tidy. The food was lovely, lots of Greek dishes, lots of variety each day - very much your typical all inclusive.
Here's where I felt a little let down and where we feel the hotel was NOT a 4*. Having to pay €70 upon check in when our paperwork stated up to €16 ... Rooms: We had a very basic room, the left wardrobe door at the top we couldnt open as it had a lump on the ceiling stopping you being able to open the door (poorly positioned) the same with the drawers at the bottom of the wardrobe- couldn't open the left drawer because the door stopper was right underneath LOL. The back of the wardrobe was broken and had come away from the wardrobe itself. The safe was tiny and you had to pay a daily fee which surprised me for a 4* hotel, usually these are included for free. The fridge leaked so everytime the door opened, there would be a spillage seeping over the floor.
Bathroom: The shower was questionable.. in our room we had a square with a door one side and a fully opened side.. the side that was open literally would flood the bathroom crazy quick... The toilet lets a horrid stench through after flushing, regardless of what toilet was flushed! The floor drain outside of the shower was wobbly and lift off and come away from the hole.
We were a party of 4 and 2. My mum was in the main reception building on the top floor, again quite a basic room which actually had lots of mould around the rooms window which alarmed me quite a bit...
The pool/entertainment: The pool is what you see in the pics, absolutely fine just small but you know that when you book. Entertainment wise the guys were lovely and kind. Made us giggle! Of a nighttime, the kids disco was just 15mins of random kids music playing but no cheesy dances like you get anywhere else which was sad because my children then didnt want to do anything as there was no encouragement or dancing from anyone - guests or staff. So just the child aspect was a bit of a let down having 2 young children in our party.
The evening entertainment was a mixed variety and was good. All in all, the staff were incredible and they really do hold the hotel together but with a few tweaks here and there, this hotel would review so much higher. I definitely wouldnt say this was a 4*. Definitely closer to a 3.
We enjoyed it and would return, for the staff alone.
