Think picturesque; think Gozo. Malta's smaller, quieter sister island is an idyllic haven – unspoilt and full of character. You can almost imagine running out of your hotel in the morning and straight into the cool, clear waters of the sea. And, at the Calypso Hotel, you can do exactly that.
Many hotels make a lot of their 'sea-adjacent' location; but the Calypso Hotel really is on the water's edge. The gentle sounds of waves lapping against the shore will carry you off to sleep and the play of the sunlight glinting on the water will wake you in the morning.
Blending classic and contemporary design features, the Calypso Hotel is a beautiful base for any holiday. That it's situated on beautiful Gozo on the shores of the Mediterranean, makes it all the more special.
As you'd expect, the views from many of the hotel's twin rooms are dominated by that wide open expanse of blue sea. And wherever you are in the Calypso Hotel, you're never far from a stunning view. All rooms are tastefully furnished and benefit from a balcony or terrace. As well as direct dial phones and mini bars, tea/coffee facilities, rooms are equipped with colour TVs, but you'll probably be far too busy exploring the island or lounging on the sun terrace to switch it on much.
There's really so much to enjoy in and around the hotel. Gozo's shops and amenities are all within easy walking distance. And at the end of another sun-drenched day on land or in and around the sea, you'll return to the Calypso Hotel for a night of fine dining and entertainment.
With its spectacular coastline, its sandy beaches and its varied landscape, Gozo is truly idyllic. And after your stay at the Calypso Hotel, you may not want to go home. Still, there's always next year…

The Calypso Hotel occupies a unique position on the water's edge overlooking the shingle beach and harbour at Marsalforn. Many of the rooms and public areas of the hotel enjoy breathtaking views of the surrounding sea.
Guest can also enjoy a great selection of facilities. The amenities of the resort are all close at hand and within easy walking distance.
we had very bad experience in this Hotel, luckely we only stayed for the weekend.b fast was very poor, dinner aswell hardly find a proper piece of meat or fresh fruit.we found ourselves like in a finger food party.everything was cut in very small pieces and TASTELESS.Never go back again.By the way could you employ proper people for the jobs.
This is a basic hotel. It is advertised as 4 star however it would be comparable to a 2 star. If you expect this to be typical 4 star hotel you will be somewhat disappointed...
I will take each point in turn.
Could do with a bit of maintenance. Looks a bit like a hostel in parts. For example, the bathroom taps in the toilets are very badly aged.
It isn't spotless. I noticed that one night there was a large piece of butter on the wash hand basin water tap in the gents bathroom on the top floor (bar and restaurant). 24 hours later it was still there on the same part of the tap so the bathroom definitely had not been thoroughly cleaned as you would expect. It is very strange to find butter in a public bathroom. With covid all surfaces that guests touch should be cleaned multiple times each day.
The hotel was not busy however they still managed to allocate us with the bedrooms with poor view overlooking the rear service area. They should make use of the best rooms they have.
The air con is poor. It isn't ice cold and is not very powerful.
The safe is very old fashioned.
The beds and pillows are not of a high quality. I expect a bed and pillows to be at least as good as what I have at home, not worse.
I asked for pancakes at breakfast on two separate mornings. On both occasions the waiters said the would ask the chef. On both occasions they returned to advise that the chef had refused to fulfil my request. This is most unusual for a 4 star hotel. It was breakfast time. Pancakes are quite popular at breakfast. I wasn't asking for steak and champagne. If you want to provide a basic no frills breakfast you should advertise this clearly. I suggest the hotel owner visits other 4 star hotels and takes note of what a 4 star hotel breakfast is.
It ends at 9:30am. This is too early. Over the course of a week I usually like to have a bit of lie in one or two mornings. They should do what all other hotels do and keep breakfast running until 10:30am.
Lunch and Dinner
The food was basic.
One night my burger was blood red and raw in the middle. Burgers should be cooked well as standard. I did not ask for a rare burger.
The french fries are of the frozen, skinny and tasteless variety. Hard to enjoy.
A friend found a large quantity of ants on his salad. He sent it back and his meal was replaced with another but this was also full of ants. They need to store their salad properly and wash it thoroughly.
I do not think this hotel employs trained chefs. When you compare the food to that available on the rest of the island there is a big difference. They are clearly employing cooks or those that work in school canteens etc. I suggest that the owners organise some to do some mystery dining.
This should not be called a swimming pool. It is more like a fish pond without the fish. Unless you are a leprechaun you will need to find somewhere else to swim.
When checking out there is no where safe room to to store your cases. They expect you leave them by the side door which is unsupervised and totally out of view from the receptionists. Someone could easily open the side door and steal your cases.
No one offered to carry suitcases. I am ok myself but for the elderly they need to implement this. It isn't fair for pensioners to have to struggle with their cases.
The bar closes really early - 11pm. They should have a night porter available for drinks or a residents bar. It is supposed to be a 4 star hotel.
Luckily we only stayed one night in this place which shouldn't even be called a hotel. They asked us to pay extra 25 euros for our little dog, when we entered in the room there were stains on the floor we immediately informed the reception and they offered us to change the room. We walked into the new room and it was dirty too...
This hotel is not good even for a dog. Note the gravity that this hotel doesn't even have a proper first aid box and the few things they have are expired.
I spent a very enjoyable week at this property. I particularly want to thank Julia Ghita, head of reservations, who helped tremendously, in straightening out problems with my booking. Also, Aleksandra, the front desk supervisor, was very kind throughout my stay. Tej, the bartender was very accommodating. The hotel is very relaxing, a solid 4-star property. The only drawbacks were WiFi related. In my room, the internet was constantly inaccessible. The moment I stepped into the hall, it was fine. It was excellent, downstairs, in the large lobby, so I used the lobby quite a bit...
But also, in the room design, the only WiFi charging outlet was across the room from the bed. This could be easily remedied. They need to put an additional charging outlet next to the bed, as people like to be online while in bed. That’s my only suggestion. All in all, a very pleasant stay at the Calypso, and I would definitely return!
had a lovely relaxing weekend, hotel and staff very good, only one thing that could be improved is the breakfast could be a bit warmer, we went for breakfast at 7am and it was luke warm at best. But fear not we will be back :)
