Calypso Hotel

TripAdvisor Review
Malta and Gozo, Europe
Marsalforn

Think picturesque; think Gozo. Malta's smaller, quieter sister island is an idyllic haven – unspoilt and full of character. You can almost imagine running out of your hotel in the morning and straight into the cool, clear waters of the sea. And, at the Calypso Hotel, you can do exactly that.

Many hotels make a lot of their 'sea-adjacent' location; but the Calypso Hotel really is on the water's edge. The gentle sounds of waves lapping against the shore will carry you off to sleep and the play of the sunlight glinting on the water will wake you in the morning.

The Calypso Hotel is an idyllic island retreat that comes with all mod cons:

Blending classic and contemporary design features, the Calypso Hotel is a beautiful base for any holiday. That it's situated on beautiful Gozo on the shores of the Mediterranean, makes it all the more special.

As you'd expect, the views from many of the hotel's twin rooms are dominated by that wide open expanse of blue sea. And wherever you are in the Calypso Hotel, you're never far from a stunning view. All rooms are tastefully furnished and benefit from a balcony or terrace. As well as direct dial phones and mini bars, tea/coffee facilities, rooms are equipped with colour TVs, but you'll probably be far too busy exploring the island or lounging on the sun terrace to switch it on much. All rooms are complete with an en-suite bathroom featuring a bathtub.

There's really so much to enjoy in and around the hotel. Gozo's shops and amenities are all within easy walking distance. And at the end of another sun-drenched day on land or in and around the sea, you'll return to the Calypso Hotel for a night of fine dining and entertainment.

With its spectacular coastline, its sandy beaches and its varied landscape, Gozo is truly idyllic. And after your stay at the Calypso Hotel, you may not want to go home. Still, there's always next year…

Under whelming and disappointing.

A very disappointing stay with 8 clients on a trek walking holiday of Malta and Gozo. The hotel is looking very tired and certainly did not live up to its 4 stars. My room at the back of the hotel felt more like a room in a down market hostel. I couldn't spent a minute longer in it than I had to. The bathroom was dated, the shower was so dreadful I put off washing my hair until I had got home, toiletries were underwhelming for 4 stars. There was mould around the bath and the around the base of the toilet was not clean. The towels were too small, old and threadbare. As there were only a few guests dining at the hotel, we had a set menu with 3 choices for the starter and main. The food was badly cooked, in particular all the fish dishes and the desserts were not great - a choice of two rather unpleasant desserts that appeared on the breakfast buffet the next morning. The breakfast buffet felt as though it was being regergetated each morning. It was not fresh and the milk jugs had clearly not been rinsed and cleaned for some time... just topped up and then stored until the next day. It was also deeply frustrating that any time we wanted to order drinks we had to pay for them immediately as we were unable to charge them to the room.

A gem of a hotel in Gozo

Just had to share what wonderful service we received throughout our recent 6 night stay. From the moment we arrived at reception, until our departure the staff were the most helpful I have experienced in a long time. Rarely do people do more than the basics but whatever our requests, they were met with enthusiasm and a willingness to help. The rooms were well appointed with all of our needs met, and although we found it hard to ‘work out’ the safe, the maintenance guy soon rectified the situation. Breakfast was a little disappointing, with just one temperamental hot drinks machine. The choice was limited so we chose to eat locally in very reasonably priced restaurants and cafes. The roof top pool is an added bonus, and once again the bar staff provided drinks and food with a smile. The food was excellent. We were part of a clubbing festival, so it was very busy by the pool with a great atmosphere, however there were very few sun beds, so it is recommended that they provide more. Whilst it was good fun, non residents used the pool, which again made it difficult to secure a sun bed.

Positives outweigh the negatives.

We stayed here as part of a tour group for 3 nights and the positives certainly outweighed the negatives. So let's start with the positives. The hotel has a 24 hour reception, which certainly assisted our group, as we didn't arrive until after midnight - and the check-in and help from the staff was excellent. That excellence was maintained for our entire stay. The hotel is well located amongst dozens of restaurants and overlooked the harbour. We were fortunate enough to have a room overlooking the harbour and small beach, with the room being large and roomy, although the bathroom relatively small. We had a table and chairs, air con, hair dryer, fridge and tea and coffee facilities. The hotel's own amenities included a rooftop pool and large terrace area with banana lounges and umbrellas, plus an indoor bar on the rooftop. There was also a restaurant in the hotel (which we didn't use for dinner) and breakfast was good, with real orange juice, proper bread to toast (compared to a number of other hotels we had stayed at) and a wide selection of hot and cold dishes. The negatives were that the hotel is a bit dated and tired and in need of a spruce up, from top to bottom. Plus, unfortunately our shower/bath had a leak, which we did report to reception. Notwithstanding that, we were very happy with our stay and would recommend the hotel to anyone staying in the area.

Great position, fantastic view over the bay but just needs a bit of TLC in some areas

This hotel was built in the 1960s, which is obvious from the design. The position is perfect, looking over the bay. On the whole, the hotel is good - the rooms are fine, but the bathroom was a bit tired - black bits in the grouting and an old-fashioned shower, but it worked fine. It was definitely worth requesting a sea view room with balcony. The Reception area was attractive and the breakfast dining room was nice. The staff were all really friendly and helpful. The breakfasts were really good - the best, creamiest scrambled egg I have ever had! The room was cleaned every day, with fresh towels if you needed them. Tea and coffee also replenished every day. However, the balcony furniture was ANCIENT - scratched and painted brown and really unattractive. And the balcony railings desperately needed a coat of paint.

Due to the live music that is played in various forms most evenings in the rooftop bar area, it is also definitely worth requesting a room that is NOT on the 5th floor directly beneath it! We emailed the hotel a couple of days before, after reading other reivews regarding this, and were given a 4th floor room which had a fantastic view over the bay. Lovely to watch the fishermen coming in and out of the little harbour every morning and evening.

The (indoor) bar on the rooftop was nice enough. We didn't have any evening meals in the hotel, so can't comment on those.

But then we come to the rooftop/pool area itself. Dismal. One wall looked as though it had had one coat of paint when it needed two; another had not been painted at all. Ragged parasols tied up with bits of wire. The blue paint round the pool itself looked as if had been painted on by a 2-year old. And - the worst - flapping, green, strips of Astroturf that, in the UK, would be considered a safety hazard as it wasn't fastened down at all. It was really quite depressing up there. But there were plenty of sunbeds, thank goodness, and they were in decent condition, although we didn't spend too much time up there.

To summarise, we had a nice time and I would stay there again, but there is definitely room for improvement in some areas, that wouldn't actually cost a ridiculous amount to do.

Karaoke on Sunday nights beware

Checked in today had a lovely evening came back to room on level 5 to blaring music that is going on until 11.30 pm. Can’t understand why so loud and for so long. Also no complimentary water or tissues in room. Have stayed here pre Covid and it was a beautiful quiet place to stay as a hotel should be a place to rest.
