The only place to stay in Valletta

Review by Rawlpluks Klampenborg, Denmark

Of all the hotels in Malta, Rosselli seems to be the only one that has managed to renovate the historical buildings, and keep the historical sense while offering an elegant, tasteful and modern luxury feel.

Check in was personal, welcoming and gentle. The rooms; initially both on the 3d floor. The kids liked the room but for us it felt a little dark with the small windows...

We asked for something with more daylight and was taken to the beautiful room 203. Double windows and an amazing view. No questions asked, we simply changed rooms. This is I feel a very personal service, trying to make the guest feel as happy as possible. The hotel interior in general is beautifully renovated, a lot of Scandinavian design touches but done with respect to the historical building. Breakfast is served on the roof, in the shade with view of Vallettas roofs, church towers and the sea. The breakfast was the best we had in Malta ; Bred, fresh fruit, great coffee, fresh orange juice (fresh yoghurt /granola would have hit itout of the park) Location is perfect for exploring Vallettas sights by foot allowing for the option of a mid-day break in your room. To sum it, Rosselli provide modern yet traditional luxury in the heart of history, the level of service is the highest yet very personal

Suggestions/wishlist would be: softer beds and better service at the roof/pool area, but this is likely due to the current situation and it did NOT spoil our experience at all.

Below this review are a short background, personal initiary and general recommendations. Feel free to ignore or read that too, i only included it to help with your planning.

About us/ our trip Traveling as two adults (40ies) and two teenage “children” We always arrange things without an agent. As a result, we often end up with an extensive knowledge of the areas and possible hotels. We do not mind spending larger sums on hotels but in general we seek experiences and moods rather than pampering. I always use trip advisor to plan our travels, and with my reviews I hope to repay the help I got and perhaps help other get a better experience themselves. However, as we visited right after the lifting of the traveling restrictions after the covid pandemic, the small number of visitors allowed us many high-end options at a good price and our recommendations will reflect this.

General Malta Anything below Valletta can be avoided, blue grotto is a tourist trap and if you have ever seen or entered a cave before, skip it. The close by temples are worth a visit if you are interested in history and plan to visit the hypogeum, then I would advise to see the temples first. Marsaxlokk is likewise mentioned as worthy of a visit but there are many smaller villages esp on Gozo much prettier. The south of Malta is dominated by the industrial harbor and a large refugee container village. Best avoided. A rental car is an excellent option, but not when visiting Valletta

Our initiary (10 days/9 nights) We spent 2 nights in Valletta, stayed in Rosselli*. An amazing hotel and in our experience, the only with a modern elegant feeling (we did check out most other 5 * options). We rented a car a drove (15 min) to the Corinthian palace* (2 nights) a more historical feel, this part I personally feel can be skipped as it was the least interesting. Make sure to visit Mdina after 18 as the crowds has thinned and then dine at root 81 * This visit can also be done by taxi/bolt from Valletta for about15 euro each way Another option and I would have preferred to have done it this way, would be to spend 3 nights at Rosselli, first night arriving and dining at the nearby Italian restaurant Baeti Paoli* 1 day seeing the church and perhaps the war museum and walking around, 2 day hypogeum and evening in Mdina, 3d day travel to Gozo by rental car

We spent 3 nights in Gozo, day one we had dinner in Xlendi (katarina), one day visiting blue hole and other pretty places and one day diving from a boat (the p51 wreck and the comino caves, both very nice dives). We stayed in Ta Cenc* because of the pool, our other option had been different B&B. We then returned to Malta and spent two nights in the Hilton before going home. All the above marked with a * has a separate other review that you can find by looking at my other reviews.

Good for Valletta

Review by dr_aaltonen Helsinki, Finland

This is an old house at Merchant street (one of two main pedestrian streets in old town). Location is very good. Hotel was quite empty when we were there but even then service was good...

Nice rooftop patio, where breakfast was served on table. Good shower, good bed, and good wifi. However, there was no proper table in the room, and quite small closet.

Review by B3065DKab

The staff and reception are very nice. The hotel looks nice but it is not a 5 stars hotel. The location of the hotel is very good...

The rooms are disappointing. I was given a superior room on the second floor. I had to ask the reception to change room as the toilets were smelly. The reception promptly changed my room and gave me a superior room on the 3rd floor. The room is spacious but very dark as there are only two small windows and the wall are painted in black. So this was unpleasant. The shower had an issue as the water kept turning cold and hot and so on. The flush of the toilets also had an issue but managed to use it properly. I do not think the bathroom is functional. Even worse, on one occasion whilst looking for my headset which I had left in the bed, I discovered few holes in the bed sheets. I have never seen that in any of the 5 stars hotels I have stayed. The reception asked for the bed sheets to be changed but did not address the problem with the shower even after I reported it.The hotel is noisy and I had to put the heater on to cover the background noise. However, the restaurants grain and undergrain are excellent and both deserve 5 stars as the service and were great. I certainly recommend the restaurants but will not stay at this hotel next time I travel to Valletta.

5* service; designer hotel

Review by CW130886

We visited this hotel in July 2020 staying for three nights.

The best part of this hotel is the staff, from front of house to cleaning, the service is 5* perfection. Nothing was too much trouble and the service was friendly without being intrusive...

The breakfast and roof top bar were both excellent, with the latter being a great spot to start the day and enjoy a pre-dinner drink.

We used the pool one afternoon to cool off (it is only a plunge pool, but worked for us!) and they happily arranged drinks despite clearly a skeleton team due to Covid in the late afternoon.

The hotel is well decorated and furnished. Both our rooms were lovely, the decor and finish in the bedrooms may be a little modern for some tastes, but we found the style impressive.

We would happily return. This is a modern, design led hotel which is pushed from a 4* to a 5* largely due to its staff.

Nice but NOT 5 star!!

Review by Druceman Cambridge, United Kingdom

We had a mixed stay here. Welcome was nice, drink while we waited for our room to be ready. The room was OK, bathroom was nice but toilet wall already had wallpaper coming away, sink looked great but was very impractical - tap was on a wall away from the sink and nowhere for a towel close to it - shower was lovely - but there was very little space to put anything...

The bedroom was the same, nowhere to put anything, just a small side table each. And just one very uncomfortable chair to sit in. But it all looked very nice. Also a cupboard with coffee machine and mini bar in it that was so hot the water in the kettle constantly felt like the kettle had just been boiled!! So a good looking room that was just completely impractical to stay in. Staff were generally good but not 5 star by any standard. The breakfast offering the same, nice but not 5 star. The biggest problem for us was that for 2 days of our stay they place was being used for a photo shoot and it made you feel like you were intruding just by going to your room and then the day after this there was a massive drinks reception that was so noisy we had to leave the hotel for a drink, we were told it would last for one hour but we returned after an hour and changed to go out for dinner and the noise was still going on. Reception staff seemed uninterested. No notice of this was given. The rooms are not particularly well insulated against noise and they definitely can’t hold back a drinks reception of 60+ people. So overall an OK hotel in a nice location but VERY far off 5 star service for very much 5 star prices!!
