Grand Hotel Excelsior

TripAdvisor Review
Malta and Gozo, Europe
Valletta

Valetta isn't just Malta's capital, but a UNESCO world heritage site. It's a window on a world of history and culture, it's the ideal starting point for an idyllic and deeply satisfying holiday experience. Given all of that, why would you entrust your accommodation to anything but the best that the region has to offer?

The five star Grand Hotel Excelsior with its prestigious location (just a couple of minutes walk from the gates of Valetta) and its astonishing views across Marsamxett Harbour and Manoel Island is as much a draw as Valetta itself.

Experience Malta's rich cultural heritage from the exquisite Grand Hotel Excelsior:

Guests of the Grand Hotel Excelsior are treated to the best of everything: wonderfully comfortable, tastefully appointed rooms, exemplary spa and leisure facilities, and renowned cuisine at its Stellar Valletta Restaurant (one of three restaurant choices). This is, in every sense, a five-star facility.

You will find your room comfortably spacious with enough room for a king-sized bed (or twin beds). Deluxe Partial Seaview rooms and Deluxe Seafront rooms are also available at a premium, but each and every room boasts a large, well-equipped bathroom and all sorts of facilities including satellite TV with additional paid channels, as well as a mini bar, direct dial phone and tea and coffee making facilities.

Wi-Fi internet access is available throughout the hotel, and reassuringly, reception is manned twenty-four hours a day. As you would expect from a hotel of this quality, nothing is too much trouble for the staff to ensure your comfortable stay. You can take your pick of the indoor and outdoor pools, we'd certainly recommend a visit to the hotel beauty centre too.

Rich in the history of Malta, Valetta is a fascinating holiday destination. And when you stay at the Grand Hotel Excelsior, you're perfectly placed to make the most of the experience. Revel in the trip and make the most of the magical experience.

Should have been great but was disappointing.

We chose this hotel as it was listed as 5star. The staff in all departments lived up to the 5star rating as did the hotel it’s self. We booked full board accommodation as we thought the food would be 5star, the buffet breakfast was fine not outstanding but ok, however the evening meal was terrible a very limited menu and some of the food was inedible especially the vegetable tart which the pastry could have been used to repair the walls of Valletta! Also the hotel is situated at the bottom of a very steep hill so to get to Velletta town and buses was a very hard walk! There was a curtesy mini bus but it only ran twice a day morning and evening...

In conclusion very disappointing.

Very relaxing and grand hotel

Review by JeffB_11 York, United Kingdom

Have had a lovely relaxing stay at this grand hotel.

Great location and views

The staff were all charming, friendly and efficient

Bedroom was spacious and spotless

Breakfast was excellent with a great choice

The special part was relaxing by the pool watching the yachts and boats sail past.

Because we stayed just out of season the poolside bars and restaurants weren’t open but they will be from May which will make the hotel even better.

I would very happily return again and can highly recommend this lovely classical hotel

Very relaxing holiday

Review by chrisE6161JZ South Shields, United Kingdom

Thoroughly enjoyed our 10 night break at this hotel after lockdown restrictions lifted. Room with a sea view was so nice. The hotel decor is very traditional and old fashioned but still very comfortable, although extra maintenance and updating required...

Excellent breakfast. Lounge service staff were slow to recognise guests waiting to order drinks & food, the same applied around the pool area. Such a shame as the hotel has a prime position on the waterfront and guests paying premium prices do expect a higher standard of service. We loved being situated close to Valletta which offers so much, places of interest, places to eat & drink. Also close to the Upper Barraka gardens for fabulous views of the Grand Harbour and easy to reach the Three Cities via boat or ferry. There’s also a fast catamaran ferry to Gozo. Would consider visiting again.

We would certainly stay again

Review by src1948 London

Huge, brutalist concrete hotel in a good location next to the sea, though a 10-15 minute uphill walk and across a busy road to get to Valletta itself. There is a free minibus to the main town every morning at 10am. Sea view rooms with terrace are large, quiet and with great views. The sizeable terraces have chairs, sun loungers etc., but no privacy. Well furnished room, with large comfortable bed and good lighting, though no sockets by the bed...

Good size TV, but BBC News was the only English TV channel which seemed to work. Good wifi though, and possible to plug a tablet into the TV HDMI socket. Large, well equipped bathroom with excellent shower and separate bath, though fittings a bit tired. Hotel and room décor traditional, with lots of dark wood and swirly carpet, but it is well cared for and doesn’t look run down. Only one restaurant open because of Covid but, because of the chilly weather and the distance to the centre, we ate in the hotel every night for 5 nights. The food was excellent and the staff great. Huge and comprehensive breakfast buffet, in hotel area with lovely views and with excellent service. All staff were extremely friendly and helpful. The outdoor pool was closed and we didn't venture to the indoor pool or spa. We would certainly stay here again, though we might choose the Phoenicia next time for its rather more central location.

Ripped off

Lovely Hotel and really enjoyed our stay but they take €150 as a deposit and 3 weeks on still not had it back. We emailed the hotel and got a swift reply that had already been sent but we still haven't received it. After having a lovely time it leaves a nasty taste being ripped off...
