The finest hotels around the world – like the The Phoenicia Malta near Valetta – have all earned their reputation over time. Indeed, the Phoenicia Hotel tends to make such an impression on its guests that they keep coming back.
As soon as you arrive at the impressive entranceway with its pillared entrance and portico, you'll see just how special the Phoenicia Hotel is. Absolutely in keeping with the traditional grandeur of the capital city, Valetta, it is a wonderful venue from which to really come to appreciate the very best that Malta has to offer.
The Phoenicia Malta's 1920's design aesthetic is a welcome breath of fresh air – richly and comfortably furnished and full of beautiful details. It's grand but very accessible – the thickly upholstered plush chairs are there to be sat on, for example.
Working in such a grand interior, the Phoenicia Malta staff have to work hard to ensure that the service they offer matches up. That the level of service here is consistently impeccable is a testament to them – and a big factor in bringing so many people back here year after year.
The large, air-conditioned rooms (both twin and double) are comfortably appointed and feature cable TV, radio, telephone, safe and minibar. Gorgeous harbour view rooms are also available, at a supplement. Whichever room you choose, you'll relish its cool, spacious, tranquil feel – the perfect place to unwind at the end of every day.
As one would expect of a hotel of this stature, the amenities are similarly excellent. There are beautiful swimming pools, there are wonderful choices to be made in the hotel's two à la carte restaurants; there is even a hotel jewellery shop. (And of course, there's an excellent gym.) To top it all off, the Phoenicia Hotel is set in seven acres of landscaped gardens.
The happy combination of its distinctive design and exceptional service means that the Phoenicia Malta richly deserves every one of its five stars. That it's a convenient gateway for Valetta almost makes you wish you could give it a sixth star!

The Phoenicia still retains its reputation as one of Malta's leading hotels and it has a devoted following of guests who return year after year. Reflecting the grand style of the 1920's with elegant rooms and furnishings, it exudes an air of quiet luxury and efficient service. The hotel enjoys a prime position just outside the main gateway to Valletta.
My husband and I have just returned after a 5 night stay in the hotel celebrating his 40th birthday. Everything was absolutely faultless, on our arrival we had a bottle of Prosecco, which was a lovely touch. From the gym & spa (we had a wonderful 75 minute massage), to the pool to the rooms and amenities, location and grounds - it’s all absolutely incredible. However the food and the service is what really sets this hotel apart, nothing is too much trouble, they are so accommodating and the food is fantastic! We ate around the pool a few days for lunch, enjoyed some late night ice cream in the bar and had breakfast every day - TIP: we booked breakfast on arrival and they discounted the price from £25pp to £19pp per day. Valletta is beautiful and if we ever returned we would only ever stay here!
We stayed at the hotel for six nights. The hotel is majestic. It has huge and magnificent gardens and a large and beautiful pool with an outstanding view...
We loved having our morning breakfast on the terrace with a view of the gardens. Our room was very comfortable and had a very large and newly renovated bathroom. The location of the hotel is brilliant -- the Valetta city gate is a moment away and the bus station is also a very short and easy walk. We walked to dinner in Valetta every night. We also took the bus to many of the sights we wanted to see in Malta. Best of all, however, was the staff at the hotel. Everyone was extremely friendly and helpful, especially the concierges, reception and the dining staff. The Phoenicia Ambassador, who is the guest relations manager, was also very attentive. We can't wait to return.
Loved this hotel, especially the fantastic pool area which has a panoramic view of the harbour which feels very luxurious and atmospheric. The location is exceptional - you couldn’t be closer to Valletta’s historic old city so it’s perfect for popping out for sightseeing and with access to loads of great restaurants and bars. Despite being in such a central location however it’s never noisy and the pool feels like a real oasis of calm...
The rooms are clean, modern, and have all the amenities you’d expect.
My only tiny negative is sometimes the service at breakfast and in the bar was a little slow, but I could forgive this during COVID when things feel a little stretched everywhere in Malta. And despite this, staff were extreme polite, friendly and welcoming.
I had always wanted to stay at this hotel, and my wife organised my birthday trip to celebrate. A warm arrival in the evening , but no welcoming drink, then finding the room we had booked was not available. Oh well...
For the entire stay of 5 nights, I was very content, the view from of our room was pleasant of the Triton Fountain, though not of the old disused buildings nearby. Hey they're historic! Room was well provided and stocked, though our kettle was broke and was changed immediately. Restaurant food was excellent and the service exemplary. Pool has been reviewed previously on here, and I found it good, views are stupendous, the gardens really beautiful. Bar staff were excellent and the decor very fitting for this historic building. Breakfasts excellent and staff very efficient. I always rate a breakfast by the coffee, and never had a complaint. Only gripe, and its minor, was we had afternoon tea, and it was slow, so don't book it if you need someplace to be. The beverages and sandwiches and cakes were lovely though. Thoroughly enjoyed our stay, and the minor glitches did not spoil it for us, and was sad to leave.
We had a really wonderful stay at the Phoenicia for 8 nights in Aug/early Sept. The service was impeccable from front desk, to the restaurant and at the pool/spa.
There were some previous comments about rooms needing an update/looking shabby, that was not our experience at all...
We stayed in two rooms (we decided to add an extra night at the end!) and both were in great condition. Our room for the majority of the stay had a balcony and view over the harbour which was just stunning. The food was delicious; we had breakfast most mornings, lunch at the pool whenever we were there, afternoon tea on one occasion and dinner on the terrace twice during our stay.
Location is also a huge plus here, you are a two minute walk from the old city of Valletta, so much history and so many amazing restaurants to choose from, no more than a 10 minute walk from the hotel!
We would definitely recommend this hotel to other travellers and can't wait to visit again. It is a luxury hotel so was not a cheap trip but was worth every penny!
