Impressive building, some faults

Review by TomGB Cheshire

Stayed at most aparthotels in the area. Decided to give the Ondamar a try. It was February/March, so hotel was not very busy...

It's a very impressively designed building with a very large reception foyer with marble pillars and a central fountain. In fact, fountains are a big feature of the hotel. One outside main entrance and near the bar/restaurant area. None of them were working though. Maybe not used in low season. We had a studio room (003), which was quite large, with two single beds pushed together to form a double. The furniture was modern light wood with two modern glass and chrome tables. The kitchen is well equipped with the usual toaster, microwave and kettle. The fridge has a freezer box, there is a full size cooker. The studio is strictly for two only, and to emphasise the fact there is two of everything in the cupboards. Two small cups, two large cups, two dinner plates, two soup plates, two side plates. two teaspoons, two fruit spoons, two tablespoons - you get the picture. So, it is a surprise to find there is a rather unnecessary full size dishwasher provided! The lighting is very poor in the kitchen. A false ceiling has been added with just one small, not very bright, ceiling light over the counter, meaning that when you are at the sink you lock any light because the light is behind you. The bathroom had a bath with overhead shower, but some rooms apparently have a shower cubicle. Once again very poorly lit. Two small ceiling lights over the washbasin and wall mirror, which once again, makes the shower area quite dark when the curtains are closed. On the plus side tha apartment was freshly decorated, with the usual floor tiles covered over by good quality tongue and groove light wood flooring. It has the added advantage of creating a bit more soundproofing than tiles. The balcony was a good size with two chairs and a table. The free air conditioning work well. There is a large modern (40"?) wall mounted TV. Sadly this was a big let down. The hotel info leaflet states it has satellite TV. However, ours had a terrestrial aerial. Although there was a large satellite dish on the roof. Presumably some rooms have a satellite signal. There were just two UK channels - Sky News International and BBC World News. Other English language channels were France 24, Russia Today, CNN, CGNS (a Chinese news channel in English). The rest were in Portuguese, Spanish, German, Dutch. A good job we go out every day and night. The security safe costs three euros a day, but it's not in your room. You use your room key to enter a room next to the reception desk, where there is a wall full of safes. You are given a barrel lock with a key and choose your safe. Not quite as convenient as one in your room. Our room was serviced daily with all towels changed, bed straightened up, waste bins emptied. Staff were friendly and helpful. The wi-fi is a bit pricey at 20 euros a week, but if you stay in the reception area it is free. There are two restaurants and a bar, plus a heated indoor pool and spa . We never saw anyone in the restaurants. Maybe people were all self catering. Unlike other places we've stayed in low season, the poolside cafe was open each day until 7 p.m., and it seems most people used this. There was an extensive menu of pastas, pizzas, salads, burgers, etc. The gardens are beautifully kept and the mini golf which replaced the previous lake seemed very popular. Having stayed in other places in the area, I would say the Ondamar is as good, if not better, than most. Oh! and it's very handy for the Big Shanghai restaurant across the street!

Smiles are expensive

Review by acdzz Newquay

The nice clean hotel is spoiled by the miserable staff who serve you at reception and the pool bar. Please be sure not to interrupt them while they're doing nothing, a scowl and huff are likely to be the response you receive. The ladies who cleaned the room were always polite and smiley so worth a mention. The room was spacious although the air conditioning units on the balcony kept us very hot and it was hard to have a conversation if they were on without shouting and letting all the neighbours hear. Great if you don't like talking to your partner.

Cheap & cheerful no frills hotel

Review by 803albaj

The hotel staff are lovely and friendly here. We stayed for 2 nights and we were happy with our stay before heading to a fancier hotel in the old town. You get what you pay for if you want a cheaper priced stay...

For example you had to pay for the wifi in the room ( €5 a night) and you had to rent the tv remotes for €20 which you get back. The bedding is VERY old and scratchy. But the rooms are very large it has a nice homey feel to them if you have kids. It even had an oven ( not all the hotels in this area have an oven, just a hob) so excellent to stick on a pizza from the supermarket pingo doce for a budget stay. The rooms are very dark with black out curtains which is great. The mini golf is excellent. The area the hotel is in has way nicer restaurants and cheaper than the old town so if you like good meals stay in this area of albufeira. However there are better hotels than this one such as the luna de oura close by. The worst part of the hotel is the sun loungers. Cheap, hard plastic ones and not enough umbrellas for shade which would be a nightmare if you went here peak season. But again you get what you pay for so although I would not return to this particular hotel I still enjoyed my stay. The best part is the restaurants especially the Chinese right beside the hotel absolutely beautiful and great value.

Ok as long as you don’t expect much customer service

Review by ShellsamCornwall Cornwall

We didn’t get off to a great start with this hotel unfortunately. When we arrived at Faro airport about 11pm ish we couldn’t find any shuttle / taxi to our hotel despite pre booking this directly. When we called the hotel to ask they seemed more concerned about blaming us for not receiving the email...

At that time of night with a young family we didn’t care who’s fault it was just wanted to get to bed. Gave up waiting for the hotel around midnight so called a local taxi. Anyway check in was straight forward. 20 Euro deposit for the tv and air con remotes. Our one bedroom apartment was nice and spacious and very clean. Very quiet hotel most of our stay, plenty of sun loungers, kids happy with the pool. Limited menu introduced by the pool bar so no breakfast items available. There are plenty of shops nearby if you want to make your own food, and the kitchen in the apartment was well stocked with plates etc. Walking distance to the beach, old town, etc etc so well placed. Visacar up the road were really helpful with organising a rental car so we could visit Lagos and then make our own way to the airport the next day.

Checkout uneventful. Would have expected a “thanks for staying” or something but the receptionist barely grunted two words at me. So yeah in summary reception were rubbish but the rooms were a good base.

Great for families

Review by Thejonesys5 Dartford, United Kingdom

We had to postpone our stay with the Ondamar because of travel restrictions, as we had booked directly, we phoned and they re-arranged and we also booked an airport transfer through them, they were very organised. On arrival the driver had waited fo us, as we were an hour late. We were early for check in at 2pm, but they took all the details and said the room would be ready at 4pm...

At 4pm the room still wasn’t ready and after a 15 minute wait, a receptionist checked and the floor was just being washed. Disappointed with this as the hotel was Less than half full. The receptionist comped us the WiFi for the room for the delay. That was the only complaint, the 2 bedroomed rooms were large and would be perfect for families, they were clean. If something went wrong (the wi-fi wasn’t working one evening) they dealt with everything immediately. The pool bar served breakfast.....this was lovely, fresh fruit, croissants, breads, ham cheese and then cooked breakfast. I would imagine if the hotel was full and the Sports bar opposite the entrance was open, then you could experience some noise later at night.....but just take ear plugs :)
