TripAdvisor Review
Portugal, Europe

From its cliff-top position, this exclusive luxury hotel enjoys panoramic views over the magnificent beach and bay of Três Irmãos and out to the Atlantic Ocean. The hotel is surrounded by 4.5 hectares of wonderfully maintained gardens, the centre of the picturesque village of Alvor with its shops, restaurants and bars is within walking distance. Portimão, the largest town of the West Algarve, is only 5 km away, Faro International Airport is at a distance of 74 km.

Due to the surrounding area and the number of steps around the hotel, it may not be suitable for those with mobility difficulties.

Hotel room very disappointing!

Review by Paradise490882 Great Wakering, United Kingdom

We booked this hotel for 2 couples - both upgrading to Superior Double rooms & both paying the same. On arrival our friends were shown to their room and were told by the porter this a lovely room. We were shown to ours and were most disappointed...

It was vastly inferior to our friends - half the size - not even large enough for a case cradle, just one armchair & a small bathroom. Our friends had a large bathroom, separate lounge area with settee and chairs - - double the size of ours. We returned to reception and were told our friends had been given a free upgrade and we had the room we had paid for! Not the reaction you expect from a 5* Hotel. The following day we were told our friends wasn't an upgrade but there are 3 rooms in the hotel of this standard and they had been allocated one. The Hotel couldn't do anything about it as we had booked with Booking.com. Our friends room was the picture on both of our bookings from Booking.com!! It is the Hotel that allocate the rooms though! If these rooms are available the sensible thing would be to allocate to a couple on their own - nobody would have to compare then! A couple of days later we found that another guest had put 2 evening meals onto our room at a cost of 88 euros! Another complaint! This was removed and both our friends and us were given a bottle of wine and 4 sweets! Our friends came back one evening to find an room service meal in their room that they had not ordered. Monica the Customer Services Manager did then give us a 10% reduction in any extras we ordered in the Hotel - over the course of the week that amounted to 30 euros for the 4 of us - a cup of coffee each! The complimentary tea/coffee/ milk in the room is only complimentary for your first drink- after that you have to pay for it. I have never come across this before - even in lower class hotels! This is not what we expected from a Hotel that claims to be 5*.

Beautiful location and highly recommend the suite and spa

Review by Odieandnermal Maulden, United Kingdom

We upgraded our room to the delux suite after checking in for our first night in a slightly disappointing superior seaview room. It was absolutely worth the upgrade. The room had an accompanying living room which is huge, a dressing room and well appointed bath and shower room...

It also has a huge balcony with stunning views out to sea, along the coast and across the well manicured back gardens. The balcony has a table and chairs as well as two large very comfortable and surprisingly private loungers. The bed was huge and very comfortable with quiet well functioning aircon, All well decorated and well appointed. Couldn’t ask for more. If we’d had others travelling with us there’s a further adjoining room which could then share the large living room which I definitely think we would like to do in future.

The hotel staff went more than out of their way - and treated my husband to a fabulous birthday cake and champagne when they realised his birthday would be during our stay. The restaurant and spa staff were similarly very friendly and professional. There’s a small shop by the spa that sells essentials which is handy as well as selling surprisingly nice good value local items - and is run by the friendliest lady you could hope to meet.

The hotel itself is beautiful, and very well designed . The view to the sea and along the coast is stunning but you still feel the hotel is tranquil and sat in lovely well kept gardens. The outdoor pool is lovely and a great place to relax, although it is very cold on cooler days! The indoor pool and spa facilities are great and were quiet despite the hotel being very busy.

You can walk down through the gardens to the sea, past some lovely seating areas (with large beds to lie down and enjoy the quiet and the view), and past the mini golf course. Or you can take the lift up or down pretty much straight to the beach!

The main restaurant was buffet only, which is very good but personally I preferred the a la carte food served at the pool cafe, or the bar menu, which is more limited menu wise but great food. In addition, though not part of the hotel, there’s a fantastic restaurant just on the beach at the base of the hotel, which serves fantastic fresh fish dishes and great beer and wine for very reasonable prices (although booking for evening is a necessity).

We had wonderful stay - and loved the room and hotel so much, we barely left except for strolls down the beautiful beach… can’t wait to go back

Mixed feelings

Review by GKM-43 Edinburgh, United Kingdom

The pool, social spaces and grounds here are beautiful, and it's ideally located right next to the beach. The staff are predominantly warm and welcoming and the breakfast good (excluding tea and coffee). The areas were kept spotless with a team of cleaners.

Now, less positive elements.

We expected two evening restaurants (as advertised when booked) - a buffet and an a la carte...

There's no a la carte. Reception gave no reason as to why.

The hotel is advertised as a golf resort however there is no golf course on site. Pestana do own golf courses in the area which we understand from other guests are 15 to 20 minutes drive.

If you eat in the hotel in the evening, get down early - there's a distinct difference in furnishings, experience and vista depending on whether you turn left or right ( rather like economy vs first class on a flight!)

The thing that let the hotel down for us was the room. It was not 5 star.

We had a rusting bathroom mirror and our shower was in desperate need of regrouting. Bathroom and beach towels are thin and tired, and only one bottle of complementary water each for the whole visit.

There was a repetitive squeeking noise every night (we believe from staff area - perhaps a lift or doors into a laundry area - that ran below our bedroom) accompanied by the noise of trolleys being rolling down to access that space - everynight!!

Add to that, our outdoor area was ground level, parallel with the drive / car parking area which wasn't the best.

We asked to move to a seaview room (move away from traffic and services area) . Reception said there was availability but at a charge. We were happy to pay. She spoke to the manager and suddenly there was no room available until 3 days before we left.

Funny that when I went on the Pestana website, there was plenty of availability and I could have secured a seaview room immediately....

Unlikely to return.

8 day getaway

Review by Vivien P Bournemouth, United Kingdom

The hotel is set in a stunning position . Advertised as 5 star but definately not! The staff are all lovely. There is access to the beautiful beach directly from the hotel...

A word of caution though! There is a general air of tiredness about the place. The room service is not 5 star( possibly not the staff fault) . Drinks are very expensive! A bottle of water is 4 euros. (38cents in the supermarket !). Better to book b & b and eat out at one of the many beachside restaurants. Great walks from the hotel and level Probably wouldn’t book to come back

Wonderful family holiday

What a wonderful, relaxing, family holiday we had. The staff were especially good which is really what made it so great. I would say that the hotel was probably more 4.5 star than 5 star but that didn’t really matter as the staff made up for it...

We were not very happy with our room when we arrived and when we spoke to them, we were moved the next day, obviously subject to availability.

The indoor pool facilities were not as good as expected, but most of the time was spent outdoors anyway. They had a gym which we used with a couple of bikes and a couple of treadmills. The sauna worked but the steam room was not nice.

We had a car which made things easier. Alvor is a bit too touristy but went to a restaurant there called ‘A Ribeira’, where the food was so good that we had to go a second time, especially for the grilled jumbo prawns. We drove to Portimao and that was much nicer, more authentic. On the last night, we sat outside and listened to a live singer. So much fun!!

I want to acknowledge the staff at the hotel, especially Monica (guest relations), Rui, Francisco, Helder (Manager), Jooo (Sub manager), Isaias, Rita and Hartik (brilliant waiter, so helpful). This is to name a few, everyone was really helpful.
