Great location.

First impressions of this hotel is very favourable. The public areas are pretty decent. Rooms are a slightly different matter...

View was reasonable enough but decor was quite scruffy for a 4 ☆ The shade on the lamp was full of stains and where the carpet and wood was joined was raggy. Had ants a few times in the room and bathroom also. 2 days we went without our room cleaned because eventhough we were out all day, the maids decided they wanted to clean late afternoon when we were back. We didn't want that. Towels were shocking, threadbare and ripped. On the plus side, we loved the concept of the sunbeds scattered around the garden. A lot more private than everyone squashed just round the pool. Loved how easy it was to reach the beach and enjoyed the walk on the boardwalk into Alvor. All in all we enjoyed our stay but the hotel could do with bucking its ideas up.

Cockroaches....

The room had 3 cockroaches. two in the bathroom and one in the closet, where we had our clothes.... the pool wasn't clean enough. the staff wasn't friendly... an experience not to repeat. They did an "upgrade"....from 1st floor to 4th floor the same exact room.

Would not recommend it to anyone. The hotel now asked me 3 different times to give my honest opinion on tripadvisor. Well, if they ask, here it is.

I travel a lot both for business and leisure...

I just stayed here for 1 week in Aug/Sep 2021. I rarely write reviews, but in this case the gap between the price and quality is just too big. If this would be advertised as a 2-star hotel I would not complain (except about the lack of covid safety), but this is NOT a 4-star beach golf resort to have "the time of your life". As for many other travellers, if we are lucky, we only get to have one shot at beach relaxation and covid safety is a major current concern. I hope this review helps others in making their choice where to spend their hard earned money and maybe the hotel to make urgent and radical improvements.

Pros:

  • it is at a beautiful beach and the distance is accurate, it is a 30 second walk
  • rooms are quite sound proof, you do not hear your neighbors, unless they re showering -quite strong wifi given the crowd using it
  • the luggage helpers were (the only) friendly staff -nice walking distance to Alvor

Cons: -very bad condition of room (holes in wall, stains on lamps, walls, and furniture, broken edges, huge cracks in wall, old mattress, etc.) -ants in bathroom and bed upon arrival, cookie crumbels in the corners

  • cleaning service did not fill up toilet paper or renew used glasses. Very embarrassing to constantly run after the (probably underpaid) cleaning staff -no welcome gesture -no staff around. very hard to get hold of someone. due to the overbooking the reception is always crowded and you just see no staff around. the pool bar and indoor bar would often be unstaffed. -you get no information on the hotel. there is no map, no signs, no brochures, nothing. no tour booking is offered, and just one the last day I discovered a minigolf which I didnt know even existed. you are not encouraged or informed about any of the possibilities, both on the premises and in the region. -20 year old tv with no smart features or connectivity whatsoever -no laundry service bag or info -no room service -no kettle, no coffee/tea bags -no minibar -just one "all-in-one" soap in bathroom, no conditioner, no lotion, no shampoo etc. -bathroom has this terrible moldy canal smell, no window or active ventilation to get rid of it -mold in bathroom/shower due to non-existent ventilation -no pool towel in room even though that was promised at check in, had to run after one -pool towels can only be exchanged in a 2 hour timeframe in the morning -no shuttle service or info on local transport -terrible toilet: something was wrong with the flushing. it was super weak and took 30mins to refill. super annoying
  • facilities are no fit for number of beds. insanely overcrowded -people park like crazy at the hotel parking blocking access to stairs and making it impossible for pedestrians to get somewhere
  • dirty pool water. after noon the edges and corners were filled with this yellow grim and dirt and no one cared -dirty pool area. no one is walking around picking up plastic cups, food residues, bird poo etc. I guess it is done once a day as it looked fine in the morning, but with these crowds more is needed. -old carpet with nasty stains everywhere in the hotel -the expensive "fresh smoothie" at the pool bar was 95% clear apple juice with a tiny bit of frozen gel, nothing fresh, no garnish etc. -only 2 pool showers for hundreds of guests -no hotel sunbeds at beach -ordered the cocktail of the day at the pool bar. after having to look up the recipe in a book for 5 minutes, the lady used her bare fingers to spoon out hands from the cocktail before handing it to me. it still had ants in it and i dont think putting fingers into my drink is acceptable in- or outside of a pandemic -staff doesnt greet or say please or thank you ever. the bar guys only reluctantly take your orders. -the 4 euro small beer at pool bar tasted expired. flat, no gas, sour even. -breakfast was by far the most terrible experience of the stay. i havent been in such a crowded place since my last concert before the pandemic. you are assigned a time window, thus banned from breakfast at your desired hour. nonetheless, you will be waiting 10 mins in line before entering the madhouse. tables are too close. plates and food are constantly empty. long lines everywhere. people using bare hands and touching everything. some guy is standing around with sterile forks but no one cares or enforces. all the food and dirt is brushed from tables onto the ground to make space for the next group. you will be walking and stepping into food while the birds start coming for their daily feast. disgusting. disinfecting spray at entrance was empty at half of the mornings.

Covid safety: -distance and mask mandates are not enforced and not implemented. no one cares. -in 1 week I did not once see someone disinfecting anything. in every mall and restaurant here in Portugal, you see staff constantly disinfecting chairs, tables, elevators, buttons, door handles etc. They may be doing it some time at night, but way too little. -no signs about covid measures. There is this one little text at the entrance (font size 6) where it says to wear mask wtc., thats it. I saw dozens of people not wearing masks inside in front of staff and no one said anything.

  • constant waiting for the elevator. at any given time of the day the elevator was overcrowded and people using their pool towel as a "mask" would join you even though it says only one household per lift
  • staff not wearing mask. on my way out I would pass by the "spa" and these two ladies never wore their masks but swiftly swapped them on if one would walk by. dont think thats the way that works in a 4-star hotel.
  • bar lady stuck fingers into my cocktail to get ants out
  • disinfecting spray was constantly empty.
  • the breakfast experience will give you crowded concert backflashs -no room service - so you have no choice but to embrace the crowds downstairs

The stay a the Pestana D. Joao II in Alvor was very disappointing. I will not be coming back but will be avoiding this chain in both my business and leisure travels. I do not blame the individual staff working there. Almost every aspect was bad and the problems widespread, I live in Portugal and been to great hotels here too. Pestana must have a management problem, probably a mix of underpaid staff and an immense lack of hospitality (and Covid safety!!!) training. I know the hotel sector had a rough time, but so did everyone coming for holidays for the first time now. They must do better. In its current form it is a rip off.

Bad first impression

My friends and I rented two Superior Villas in Pestana Dom Joao Beach in Algarve for 10 days starting the last week of June. My first impression with the receptionist, a young man with a "rather unique hairstyle!" left a lot to be desired. I have checked with the reservation the morning we were to check in that our request for 2 villas, next to one another was guarantee, But according to the young man, that was not possible...

And he made me feel like I was actually lying about this because there were no 2 superiors villas attached. Then I asked him to give us 2 villas near one another, and that, he said OK. At no time at all I was rude or unpleasant.The only thing I told him was to resolve our case the best way possible. We spoke a little while he was trying to sort this out and I told him the exceptional thing I learned from the hotels in Asia ( which I have travelled extensively for 20 years ) has to do with their staff attitude. I guess he did not like what I said and that he was about to "punish" me? I could not believe when I checked into my villa, it was one (probably the only one) facing the street and some apartments blocks. The ONLY 2 VILLAS RENTED THAT NIGHT WERE OURS, THE REST WAS EMPTY for quite a couple of days after we checked in. So I went back to the reception and talked to a receptionist name Rosie, who gave me a villa with a view. Good for you, Rosie. For what we paid, the restored villa was very basic. There was no sofa or chairs in the living/dinning room. And since there was only 1 TV in the living room, it was uncomfortable to have to sit in what I would call a single bed with some cushions thrown around to watch TV. or else, use the 2 high chairs, that even for having meals, is not comfortable. Having said that, the rest of the hotel was quite nice, right across the beach, had beautiful grounds, pool, and restaurants. All the other staffs were really very nice and friendly. Reception is the first impression a guest has with the hotel, so I sincerely hope that the Management should look into this young man and teach him some manners and patient towards the guests. And he had the guts to tell me that he has been to some of the best hotels in the world. I wonder where!!! Could this be the reason why the average points for this hotel is only a 7.3?

Well appointed hotel, with 3 pools in an excellent location.

We stayed at this hotel for 5 nights recently and the location is excellent. It is only a short walk to the beach and boardwalk. A short taxi ride or 15 minutes walk away from the town centre...

There is a large selection of bars and restaurants in Alovr all within a short distance of each other. The hotel also has its own bar, which has a reasonable selection of beers and a nice atmosphere. The rooms have all the amenities you would expect such as tv, fridge, safe, hairdryer and AC. The extensive grounds have 2 outdoor pools, with plenty of sun loungers and umbrellas and a pool bar for drinks & Ice cream. There is also an indoor pool with Spa as well. Breakfast was included, there was plenty to choose from and it was hot & fresh.I couldn't find much to fault the hotel. Perhaps a more extensive selection of fruit at breakfast. Also, a shaving mirror in the bedroom would a nice addition. All in all, it was a really good hotel in an excellent location.
