November Break 2019. But only had option to put April 2020 in the drop down travel box.

Review by Debbie A Harrogate, United Kingdom

November 2019: Absolutely stunning sea view from our room. There was some work, re landscaping the beach going on at the time, but it was interesting to watch. No complaints. Lovely swimming pool, and private from the boardwalk and the main drag along the beach front...

Would definitely return.

Requires better service

Review by Jpopat London, United Kingdom

The staff are completely unhelpful. The tui bus transfer dropped us across the road . You have to drag the bags in yourself...

No Porter to take bags to your room . Do it your self . First room they gave us had no A/C . The staff just said no one to look at it take it or leave it . Asked receptionist and staff about bus outside the hotel . Again no one seems to know anything. Beds / pillows uncomfortable. All the towels are so old and worn out . They ran out of tea bags at breakfast.

The only thing the hotel had going for it was the location on the beach .

Best Location, great staff

Review by Channa0511 United Kingdom

What a resort! Alvor is a small quaint fishing village. Lots of places to eat in town and along the beach. The hotel is perfectly situated behind the beach which was the reason we booked it.

The staff especially were friendly and efficient and the facilities were great...

Hotel had a recent refurb which would obviously help with my experience and rooms were clean (no tea/coffee making facilities), but for 2adults and 1 child perhaps a little on the teenie side, but be honest how much time would you stay in the room - not a lot.

We went for a week, wish I had another week.

Cannot praise this hotel and it’s location enough. I worked in travel for 22yrs in snr management contracting and product management and really love this place.

Will go back!

A good holiday, spoilt by the initial poor service, in a superb location. I would be very happy to return :)

Review by Frostywasp999 Marlow, United Kingdom

We visited this hotel for a week commencing 3rd June, and apparently the hotel had only reopened the week before following Covid lockdown. Having booked a room with a partial view of sea we were pleased that our room (2007) was at front of hotel on second floor but looking to the side over the extensive gardens and mini-golf, with views out to the beach and sea in distance. Room was fine, but we did find the bed was hard and unforgiving...

The room faced east so got morning sun only.

During the first few days we were very disappointed by the quality of service, whether it was at reception, at the pool bar or at the lounge bar. We were on occasion waiting for food for 45 to 50 minutes, waiting for drinks service for 10 mins and 15 mins queuing in reception. Due to our frustration we brought this to the attend of both the Manager Pedro and also separately the Customer Services Manager (Alicia?). Both were most responsive, although service did not immediately improve, but the end of the holiday it had achieved the level the hotel would have wished. It was just a shame that we were only there 7 days and certainly the first 2/3 days were not the most relaxed as they might have been, as I could have done without having to chase hotel management!

That said, the location of hotel in relation to beach, pool and the Alvor boardwalk was quite excellent. It was a shame that the beachside bar had yet to reopen, but none the less the facilities were excellent. The gardens extensive with luxuriant grass for sunbathing, alongside the conventional pool surround. A very big pool and separate toddlers pool. There also were Spa facilities on site but we did not have time to test them out. I did think some of the public areas were a bit tired (e.g. ground floor toilets behind reception) and reflected the age of the hotel.

Other than breakfast (which was a bit disorganised to start with insufficient coffee stations - subsequently fixed), we always ate out. See my separate reports. The raised boardwalk with direct access from the hotel really is a wonderful feature, protecting the extensive sand dunes at the back of the long beach. It also gives access to a number of top fish restaurants up and down the walk. It would be fine for wheelchairs and runners due to width and even level.

We didn’t venture into Alvor much. I did a couple of long cycles in the mountains inland.

Overall a good holiday, spoilt by the initial poor service, in a superb location. I would be very happy to return :)

Fantastic Hotel

Review by Claire H Durham, United Kingdom

Stayed at the pestana don joao 2 from 6th to 12th June and really enjoyed our stay. Breakfast good and organised. Hotel clean and has been refurbed...

Rooms fine for 2 but wouldn’t want to try and fit a third person in. We did have a huge terrace that got the sun all afternoon so that was a bonus. The only thing with the room is that there is a massive window from the bedroom to the bathroom with a roller blind controlled by whoever’s in the bedroom so that was a bit strange. Situated in a great position right on the beach within easy walking distance of harbour and many bars and restaurants. We ate at a lovely little place called ciao baby 3 nights and visited Irish bar the black stove, both great. If you walk to the left of the hotel down the beach around 8.30 on a morning the tide is out and the scenery you can get to us stunning. All in all a fantastic stay and will be back again as soon as we’re allowed.
