Located at the mouth of the Bensafrim River in the Western Algarve, Lagos is one of the most visited and popular cities in Portugal.
This area has plenty of historical interest as the origins of the resort of Lagos date back to 2000 years BC. The old city walls are 16th century; visitors also come to see the Porta de São Gonçalo (St.Gonçalo’s gate) with its watchtowers on either side, as well as the historic Governors' Castle (of Arab construction).
Along the cobbled street at the back of the square is the famous 'golden church' of St. Anthony which was rebuilt in 1769; and the church of St. Sebastian, dating from the 14th century is on a hill and offers fantastic views over Lagos bay.
