Located on the western side of Funchal with views over the city and bay, the Dorisol Estrelícia has a reputation for comfort and friendly service. It shares facilities with the Dorisol Mimosa next door. Although in a peaceful location, the varied delights of Funchal are readily accessible. Within a few minutes walk is the sea and Lido complex with its large seawater swimming pool.
We had a room on the 7th floor but as the lifts were generally easy to call this was no problem. The room was reasonably spacious with good TV -lots of English channels - the bed was fine and the room had an overhead fan to keep you cool. Room service was fine with beds made up each day and towels changed when you asked...
The restaurant was nice and food was good, especially if you like fish. A good choice of drink in the restaurant was the carafe of wine which was surprisingly cheap about 4 to 5 Euros for 0.5 li. The reception staff were helpful too answering queries efficiently. This hotel is actually one part of 3 Dorisol hotels all in the same street. It had 2 outside pools and one heated indoor pool with gym attached.
The approach to the hotel was up a lot of stairs but then Funchal itself is very hilly. Overall a good choice of place to stay given it was in the Lido area with bars and buses close by.
Very steep incline of probably a couple of hundred feet to reach the front door. Once inside and after catching your breath, first impressions of the hotel are very good. The room was spacious and very clean...
I think they changed the bed linen daily it always seemed fresh. Towels were changed daily and the shower was excellent. The bar area was pleasant enough and both swimming pools were large and kept in good order. There was a good selection at breakfast but the English of bacon egg etc was a little dodgy. Entertainment every night. All in all very good for the price we paid.
Good location with plenty of restaurants bars and shops around. Not far from local harbour. Beautifull view on ocean...
Nice pool bar with evening entertaiment. Nice breakfast with friendly wait staff. We had a pleasant stay here.
We prior comfort and customer care over luxury. The hotel is not new and definitively needs some serious renovation. The steep hill is a challenge after a long day working but they do have buggies to help you get there...
Not all rooms are like ours but we had a wonderful view and enough space to "feel at home".
Hotel has every amenity you might expect - but expect modest.
The value is in the staff - always attentive, always polite and extremely nice.
A decent enough hotel offering airy rooms with surprisingly comfy, firm beds. A little tough to get any real control on the shower temperature in our room meant the water was near-scalding every morning, but the overall standard of the accommodation was most satisfactory.
No real letdowns, except for the really uninspiring breakfast. Fine for the price though, and a couple of slices of toast after a decent night’s sleep was enough to get us out and onto more interesting food options through the rest of our days in Funchal.
Knowing more about the topography of the area after this visit, I’d most likely take a more easily accessible hotel next time - I’m no Kate Bush, so running up that hill (especially after a delicious dinner and a little overindulgence on the wine) was no fun at all.
A decent hotel for the price, so it’s ideal if you’re looking to stick to a budget...
Gorgeous views over the city on the upper floors also!
