Funchal

The apartment complex lies 3 km from the centre and is approximately 700 m from the beach. Countless shops, bars and restaurants are to be found in the vicinity (within 100 m) as are links to the transport network (50 m away).

Opened in 1997, this 6-storey apartment complex comprises 24 apartments and 30 studios split between two buildings. The complex is part of the d'Ajuda holiday village, the facilities of which may be used by guests here. A lobby with 24-hour reception service, safes, a currency exchange desk and lifts feature at this hotel. A bar, a café and a restaurant are to be found in the main building of the complex. There is also a laundry service, a car park and medical assistance on offer.

The comfortably furnished rooms come with an en suite bathroom with hairdryer, a direct dial telephone, satellite/cable TV, a fridge, a kitchenette, a lounge room, a hire safe, central heating and a balcony. The apartments are similarly equipped but also come with a separate bedroom. The rooms are cleaned by hotel staff on guests' departure.

There are swimming pools and a health club with an indoor pool, a gym, a sauna and a hot tub within the complex, the use of which guests are entitled to.

Guests are offered breakfast and evening meals in the form of a buffet at the neighbouring Jardins d'Ajuda suite hotel.

Due to the surrounding area and the number of steps around the hotel, it may not be suitable for those with mobility difficulties.

I was gratful they kept me on the same floor...

The pool guy was very helpful most days he carried a chair down to the pool for my mom. Restarant staff where very friendly and the cleaner helped with our suitcases on the last day. Hotel was very clean.we only stayed bed and breakfast there was a good choice and some nice home made cakes and pastries. Had a lovely time at this hotel and i hope to visit again soon.

Nice Clean, Friendly Hotel

Review by Ianpatterson_2000 Sheffield, England

Stayed here First week in Feb. Travelled with Jet2 & paid a very reasonable price for the week on a bed & breakfast basis. Beforehand, I emailed the hotel about having a kettle in the room & was immediately replied to by Luis, who told me they would upgrade me to a room with a small kitchen...

(Thank You Luis) The hotel is starting to show it's age but it was clean, in good repair & everyone was friendly. The rooms are large & have a shower over the bath. There was A/C , a safe (extra charge) & a modern TV. We had nice views from the balcony of the pool area & the gardens. The breakfast was basic & had a hot choice of bacon, eggs, beans etc.. as well as breads, fruit, yoghurts, meats, cheeses, cereals & porridge. Tea & coffee & fruit juice was self service. With such a choice, there is always something for everyone (although I am sure some people will find something to complain about.). The bar was quiet but had music on a few nights. They have a happy hour between 18.30 & 19.30 where there is a range of drinks on sale at half price. I found all the staff to be friendly & willing to help. There is an outdoor pool area with a coffee shop /bar at the side of it - although this is a bit pricey. There is a very nice heated indoor pool, steam room & hot tub but while the covid restrictions apply, only the indoor pool. is open.
Jet2 list this as a 3 star hotel & this is a fair assessment. It is a clean friendly, value for money hotel with good facilities.

Had a greatime.

We had a wonderful 6 weeks here, although the rooms are in brown furniture which makes it look quite dated it is of good quality. The rooms are well presented and if you are short of anything it is very quickly dealt with. The staff are all very friendly, a special mention has to go to ARMONDO i hope i have spelt his name right...

He is a credit to the hotel , He is charming funny friendly and a most welcoming front of house. The breakfast is a vast display of food enough to fill the largest of belly s. The breakfast staff are war and welcoming and do a fantastic job. The main pool guy who has a look of a young Ormundo is the hardest working pool guy i have ever seen. He too has a good sense of humor and is very helpful. The cleaners are very good and change the sheets on a regular basis. The pools gardens are well kept i could not find anything to say much in a negative way about our stay ,we met some lovely people here and will remember our time here fondly.

Lovely peaceful. Nice gardens and pool area

Review by V5036WQdenise Newcastle upon Tyne, United Kingdom

This locally owned hotel is a delight. Staff are professional and amiable . Rooms are great ...

Top tip if you like quiet ...ask for garden view room . Outside street view rooms ........though with a lovely sea view can generate alot of noise ............barking dogs (ofcourse it is Madeira) builders and tarmac guys (ofcourse it is Madeira). However watching the street life down below is fascinating . Indoor and outdoor pools are managed professionally - shout out to Miguel the pool guy and south London brought up .An absolute credit to the hotel as a natural people person . Mara the waitress , the barman and all concierge staff are great. It is quiet at the moment ....which I like but can imagine when things come back to a sense of normal this is a great family hotel for fun times and wonderful customer service. Get a great deal with Jet 2 or Mercury and you are in for some serious rest and relaxation here. Or book on Booking.com ..............could not believe the deal I got. Restaurants at the door step. Madeira shopping Forum just opposite. Big tip for UK mums/dads ..........wait and buy the kids sports kits at Lefties in Madeira Forum . Goodness you will save a fortune !!

Spacious rooms and excellent staff

Review by Arnuba Glasgow, United Kingdom

This is our second visit to the Jardins d'Ajuda. We decided to return to the same hotel as we'd had such a good time there last year. We were allocated a lovely room looking onto the main street...

I had written to the management prior to arrival to request a balcony on the main street as I love looking out at all of the beautiful Christmas decorations, and they had very kindly granted this request.

We were on a bed and breakfast option. This is one of the only hotels I've been to who cater for coeliac sufferers like myself, without you having to ask them in advance. They have gluten free cereals and cakes, and a good selection of plant based 'milks' such as oat and soya. They have yoghurt, sausages, toast, beans, salad and many other options to suit everyone. The options change daily. Must say a special thanks to Susanna Jardin (the breakfast chef), who was always so cheery and friendly to everyone. Nothing was too much trouble to her. The rest of the waiting staff are also really attentive and that's what makes this hotel such a nice place to visit.

Most days we used the indoor swimming pool, which is lovely.

Ajuda is a great area to stay in as there are many good restaurants and shops nearby the hotel including the Forum Shopping Centre. We ate most days in the Pingo Doce supermarket in the basement of the centre, which does really good value meals at a fraction of the cost of most restaurants as the food is priced per kilo. There are many good cafeterias and snack bars in the centre, which are also good value.

We like walking and walked the 3 kms into town and back most days, but you can get a bus pass if that's too far, and the buses are very frequent.

In the other direction from town there is a stoney beach called 'Praia Formosa'. It takes around 15 minutes to walk there from the hotel, and there are 3 nice bars along the front where you can sit and look out at the ocean. If you continue along the sea front you will arrive at the tiny fishing village of Camara de Lobos.

One of the things I love about Funchal is the abundance of public toilets, which are absolutely spotless. I think we will continue to visit Madeira around Christmas time as the Christmas light displays are fabulous and the atmosphere in the town is great. The Jardins d'Ajuda made Christmas Day very special with a beautiful breakfast and a drink of bubbly. Thanks, again, to Armando, the manager, and all the lovely staff from the cleaners and the reception who make this hotel such a great place to stay in.
