Funchal

Peacefully lying on a sloping terrace overlooking the mix pebbly/sandy Arieiro Beach, this superb hotel provides an idyllic setting on the mesmerising island of Madeira. Guests will find themselves within easy access of a myriad of bars and restaurants which lie a mere 400 metres away, while links to the public transport network are to be found just 50 metres from the hotel. 6 km from the hotel lies the lively tourist hub of Funchal, which is easily accessibly via the hotel shuttle bus. The nearest shops and Camara de Lobos are located 2 km away, while the closest nightclub can be found 6 km from the hotel. Guests of all ages will appreciate the hotel's serene setting, warm hospitality and excellent facilities. The guest rooms are beautifully decorated and complete with modern amenities for visitors' convenience and comfort.

Due to the surrounding area and the number of steps around the hotel, it may not be suitable for those with mobility difficulties.

Fabulous hotel accommodation, meals and service

Wonderful hotel We spent a week here and had a happy time. The rooms were super, the view fabulous, the pool one of the cleanest and loveliest we have experienced and all the staff were amazing delivering an outstanding service ! Both my daughter and I had a pedicure and wish we had used the spa sooner - what a find! Meals were delicious and oh my the bread and ice cream. Thank you :)

Sleeping on the sound of waves

Review by Mihai A Luxembourg City, Luxembourg

This whole hotel is on a cliff, facing the Atlantic Ocean, your balcony opens to a nice open view consisting of:

  1. the ocean
  2. a black sand beach
  3. the beach promenade
  4. a glimpse of the pool & surrounding area

The room was quite nice, personnel always polite and very helpful to give you indications on what to see. But the most interesting thing is the sleeping part, as it was quite hot we kept the balcony doors wide open, and then you notice the sound of waves. Very soothing, a nice way to ship to the land of dreams.

Warnings:

  1. to get to the pool area you still go down the equivalent of 3-4 floors (there are sloapes and steps)...

The pool is next to the beach promenade 2) The parking places are in quite steep area, and not sufficient enough. Parking on the street is free but also can get full in the late afternoon. 3) You can get breakfast, lunch and dinner at the hotel, but if you want to look around there are not so many other options close by. 4 beach restos on the promenade and they can be quite full at dinner.

Fabulous hotel and staff

Review by philomenaf903 Leeds, United Kingdom

Both my husband and I both loved this hotel, the breakfast was superb, couldn’t fault the room, bed was comfortable, maybe another pillow would have been nice. The views from our balcony were brilliant. As mentioned in previous reviews,it is steep getting to the pool, you have to make sure you have brought everything you need,as popping back to the room was a no- no.The only negative that I personally had was that there was no local supermarket nearby.Otherwise we really enjoyed our stay

TripAdvisor Review

Clean room, great view.

We stayed for 1 night as attending a wedding.

Positives:-

  1. Room was very! clean and modern...
  1. Great view of the sea. Very calming!
  2. The pool had comfortable lounges - perfect for an afternoon nap.
  3. Great location for funchal Lido.
  4. Taberna for poncha is near by - always a bonus!
  5. Night receptionist is very kind and listens!
  6. Very friendly and chatty Maid.
  7. Pool bar has a range of food and drinks. Prego sandwich was nice, could have more garlic, but that's my personal preference.
  8. Parking available on the hotel - but you have to pay. We parked along the road for free, Loads of space available.
  9. I did see a day entertainment programme - I didn't attend, so can not comment further.
  10. Mini fridge in the room. Drinks available - but charged extra.

Negatives:-

  1. Rude day receptionist when checking in and out. This man always had something to say and related it back to the European law. When I asked why there wasn't an iron in the room, he replied with that it is against European laws, how?, I don't know (I wasn't getting into a debate with a hangover!)
  2. No iron in the room - not good when attending a wedding. Or in general really... . Had to pay for the pressing service in the end - 9euro for a dress. But! the maid came straight away and it looked like it had been done by a dry cleaner. Thank you!
  3. No full length mirror in the room. Did explain this to the day receptionist on check-out - he told me that everyone stays at this hotel for a wedding.... Surely you want to see your whole body anyway,, regardless of the situation of why you are staying at the hotel?.
  4. Delayed check in - had to wait over an hour for our room. That was okay... We made full use of the sea view and a drink at the pool bar.
  5. Passport - we didn't bring our passports with us, as staying elsewhere on the island. The confirmation email doesn't specifically state you HAVE to bring your passports, not that I saw. This became a big! issue for the day receptionist, requesting we go back and get them (I don't think so - 40 minute drive back and forwards!). However, the night receptionist was happy with seeing our passport on our phones, and did not create a fuss. We even settled are checking out bill with him to avoid the day receptionist.
  6. No fan or air-con, luckily for us it was quite cool in Maderia.
  7. Check out is 12. We were 10 minutes late checking out (hangover!). Day receptionist was phoning the room at 12:05, telling us that we need to vacate the room. I don't think he liked us!, never had this before, anywhere!

Breakfast - I did not get up early enough, so can not comment.

Overall, Nice hotel to stay. Is very clean and simple. Great location for Maderia, Its by Funchal and right by the Lido. Selection of Taberna near by. Recommend! Just check-in at night, bring an iron and a full length mirror with you if these things you require like me!

Incredible veiws

Review by Fraz1 Liverpool

To start with I could give this hotel a five just for the views from the rooms alone, but there is much more to the Orca Pria. The rooms are clean and well equipped and as mentioned the view from the balcony are incredible. I miss the sight and sound of the sea now I'm back home. The rooms were cleaned every day and always after we had left the room...

The reception staff are friendly and helpful and available 24hrs. The food in the main restaurant has plenty of choices for starters mains and desert. Two meat and two fish courses with options of rice, pasta, potatoes, fries and salad. Cheese and crackers soup, bread and more are available. There is also plenty to choose from for breakfast. The staff in the restaurant are efficient, friendly and helpful too, I could not find any fault in them The pool bar also has good food and drink and the pool itself is brilliant with great views of the sea and surrounding area. There is quite a steep walk to the pool level from the lower floor of the hotel, but this is set in beautiful landscaped gardens The footpath in front of the hotel leads to a lovely fishing village that takes about a twenty minute walk that is well worth the effort. The hotel runs a free shuttle into Funchal a few times a day throughout the week, there is a bus stop just outside the hotel that also goes to Funchal every half hour for just €1.95. All in all this is a fantastic hotel that we would be happy to return to in the future. Thank you to all staff at the Orca Pria for a perfect holiday.
