Pestana Miramar

TripAdvisor Review
Portugal, Europe
Funchal

Elegant, grand and charming, the Pestana Miramar is a wonderful example of twenties style and modern amenities coming together in perfect harmony. This is certainly one of Portugal's grandest hotels. Savour that first trip up the grand stairway to the front door, and your gateway to a wonderfully luxurious and relaxing holiday in the heart of Madeira.

Experience the unique charm of the elegant Pestana Miramar, Madeira:

One of the many wonderful things about the Pestana Miramar is that it combines its elegance with a real sense of charm. The views are wide and expansive; the décor is wonderfully rich throughout… And yet, dining can be a very cosy and relaxed experience here. And while the guests' rooms maintain that sense of elegance, it's never at the expense of real comfort.

A big advantage of staying at the Pestana Miramar is your close proximity to Funchal itself. It's a beautiful, vibrant city looking out over the perfect blue waters of the Mediterranean. You can explore to your heart's content without ever straying too far from your wonderful holiday home.

Another advantage: when you stay at the Pestana Miramar, you can make full use of all the facilities of the hotel's sister property, the Pestana Village. Between the two resorts you get a wealth of restaurants and bars to choose from, as well as a choice of swimming pools. There is also an excellent Health Club, and a well-stocked games room.

Perhaps one of the biggest 'perks' of staying at the Pestana Miramar is your room itself. Each of the hotel's ensuite superior studios affords an exceptional view. Sit out on your private balcony, cool drink in hand, and gaze out over the gardens or out towards the mountain and relish the sort of views and the relaxing ambience that holidays to Madeira are all about.

For your added convenience, studios are equipped with kitchenette, cable TV, radio, phone and safety deposit box. So you'll have everything you need for a stay-at-home evening, and a wonderful opportunity to revel in the stillness and the beauty of it all.

Holidays to Madeira give you a uniquely relaxing holiday. And if it's relaxation you crave, then Pestana Miramar is going to be your dream destination.

Due to the surrounding area and the number of steps around the hotel, it may not be suitable for those with mobility difficulties.

Lovely Christmas Break

Review by FarAway36593709534 Wadebridge, United Kingdom

We had a great ten days in Madeira for Christmas. (Should have been 2 weeks but cancelled and then redirected flights meant we were only on the island for 10 days!). The first week was based at the Pestana Miramar on an RCI exchange...

We found it a lovely resort. More than helpful staff and good accommodation. Our first allocated apartment was well presented but did have a disappointing outlook from the balcony however the staff did everything they could to relocate us and the following day we were offered a choice of a studio or one bed apartment. The rooms were nicely decorated, clean and comfortable with plenty of space. The kitchenette was adequate for our needs although we dint tend to cook much on holiday. We enjoyed a nice meal on our first night in the on-site restaurant but tended to eat out most evenings in the numerous restaurants in the vicinity. The Miramar is adjoined to the Pestana Village and you have the freedom to use the facilities I.e. pools, bars, restaurants, on either site giving plenty of space and options. We found the resort to be conveniently situated to explore both the lido end of Funchal and the main town which is just a short walk. To cap things off, we stayed fin a private apartment for the last few days of our holiday but on checking out we had nowhere to leave our luggage or freshen up before our flight later in the evening. We cheekily phone The Miramar to ask if we could leave our luggage with them ( this being 5 days after we had stayed there). They were great and immediately agreed, saying we could use their facilities until ready to leave for the airport. We would certainly be returning to Madeira again and would definitely be happy to return to the Mirama.

Excellent stay

Review by edgeway Blackpool, United Kingdom

All members of staff were up to Pestana standards, and the request of a high level unit was honoured. Lovely view and very spacious unit. Surprisingly small kitchen for the size of unit but nothing was short.

great place to relax and enjoy Madeira

Booked this hotel last minute and it wa a very good deal. Well positioned between Funchal city and the Lido. The hotel is lovely in an old colonial style looking a bit like a Caribbean Resort, the staff are friendly and the cleaning staff keep the place in good order...

We were on a B&B deal and the breakfasts were plentiful, tasty and well organised. The only downside is the price they charge for parking your hire car in their car-park which at 15 euro per day is not far off the rental charge! I would recommend parking at the surface car park at the Lido outside Pingo Doce which is 3.50 for 24 hours. Parking aside, it's a good hotel- the pool is very cool in December but the sea remains around 20-21 degrees and is great from the Lido. We would certainly consider the Pestana Village on returning to Madeira.

Four Stars? Not really, here’s why…

Review by SSgt_Fury Ipswich, Suffolk, England

This hotel was clearly once a grand lady, alas this has long faded. There is no way this hotel is four stars, let me explain why: On our first night, I found the light above the balcony was VERY BRIGHT, so called to ask for the light to be disabled. My call was transferred to four different people, and when I spoke to the last man, I knew he was literally blowing me off...

I waited two days, still the bright light on the balcony at night. I finally asked the lady at reception if my request was going to be met - I even offered to remove the light myself if someone gave me a ladder and screwdriver! The lady at reception told me it was too much trouble to remove the bright light! I have to admit that I did not expect such a response, especially when Pestana asked my wife and I to renew our Vacation Club, for a considerable amount of money! Ten minutes later, maintenance removed the bulb… It took the maintenance man longer to travel to my room than it did to remove a light bulb! Yet it was too much trouble?

I understand the hotel was moth-balled during the Covid restrictions and was told there had been a top to tail cleaning process. During our stay, my wife dropped some coins under the bed in our room… the floor was filthy! This is hardly four star!

We use a laundry service that is located in one of the nearby shopping centres. We were told the service would return our laundry, but it didn’t show up. The next day, we contacted the laundry service and discovered the laundry was dropped off at reception, as promised. Sadly, reception never told us our laundry arrived and it sat there overnight! Not what one would expect of a so called four star hotel.

Enough of the negative! This was not our first stay at this hotel and our room view was superb, great view of the pool and nice view into Funchal Harbour, handy to see when cruise ships are in town, so we could avoid Funchal centre! The staff manning the swimming pool were first class and nothing was too much trouble! (I kinda wished I had asked them to remove the light bulb over the balcony!)

The bar staff at Village and this hotel are world class, certainly worthy of four star.

It seems that Pestana standards have really dropped overall, and am relieved that our Vacation Club points will soon run out. We do have a choice in hotels that will offer a higher level of standard and thanks to Pestana’s “ too much trouble” standard of service, we will make new discoveries!

A very nice hotel with an excellent team of friendly attentive staff

Review by Mike F Alvor, Portugal

We have just stayed at the Miramar along with family members who are part of the Pestana Points system. The large double room was very spacious with an excellent comfortable bed giving a good nights sleep. We had a balcony facing out across the bay and with views of Funchal rising up the hillside that when lit up at night gave a fairy like impression...

The room also had a small kitchen area where we were able to comfortably prepare breakfast and enjoy eating it on the balcony in the sunshine. A lovely experience in mid-November. Two lovely pools with plenty of loungers and very peaceful surroundings with well maintained gardens. Staff were excellent and were also friendly and attentive - nothing was too much trouble - working as a team for the benefit of all the guests.
