Due to the surrounding area and the number of steps around the hotel, it may not be suitable for those with mobility difficulties.
As a 20 year old couple we thoroughly enjoyed staying at this hotel. Was a very good location, only a short walk to get into Funchal, surrounded by great restaurants, the pool was very nice and spacious, our balcony had a lovely view and the breakfast had a good variety and was very tasty! We will be returning!
Visited Porto Mare with family in August. The hotel grounds and buildings are beautiful. The outdoor pool, indoor pool and spa are excellent.
When we arrived it was around 11.30am, we walked around the pool looking for sunbeds, there weren’t any available. A member of staff was moving a parasol, so I asked him if there were any sunbeds free, he just shrugged. I then realised that the reserving of sunbeds is something that starts from very early in the morning. If the hotel made sure there were enough sunbeds then people wouldn’t need to start reserving them. Or at the very least, point people in the right direction of where they could find them.
The buffet breakfast is very good, no complaints. The evening buffet is good too, but slightly expensive. The hotel offers a 3 night package, where they reduce the cost by 2 euros per person, but it is still not the best value. We found that we could get a less expensive, good quality meal at local restaurants, which is important to know if you are a family.
The pool area is busy during the day, but would be improved by some international music. There are kids clubs but nothing for older kids. Some games during the day for the teenagers would be welcome, helping them to mix with others and make friends.
Entertainment is v good, there’s live music every night. It takes a while to figure out which bar it is playing at. It would be easier to have it consistently at one place, but I guess this might not suit guests from the sister hotels. The same with Happy Hour. This is not always at the pool near the beach and once you find where it is, it is always busy and you have to wait around 10-15 minutes to get served. The staff on the bars are not very responsive to guests. It takes a while to get their attention. You feel like you’re taking them away from what they’re doing… however I would like to praise Hossein as an excellent bar tender/waiter – he really is exceptional.
However, despite the small criticisms here, this is a very good hotel. It is well located, the facilities, including the spa, indoor pool and games, are exceptional. The rooms are spacious. There was a little bit of noise at night, but only on the corridors.
The bus stop is right outside the hotel and you can easily take a bus to Funchal and to local shopping centres. I would recommend this hotel and did have a great holiday here.
Beautiful location. Comfortable rooms. Pleasant staff. Two observations for the hotel to help improve what is a very good hotel. 1. Please, please consider pool mattresses for the sunbeds. The relatively new ones are style over substance, and a hotel with pretensions to be 5* needs to provide more comfort around the pool. 2. We felt that the pool area and pool needed more cleaning? These are meant as helpful pointers, not as a massive criticism of a justifiably popular (but expensive) hotel that we have been to many times.
Maderia is a wonderful holiday destination and the hotel Porto Mare is a fabulous facility with gardens, pools and great facilities. Its ideally located for easy access to Funchal and the scenic coastal path to Campara Lobos.
Highly recommended hotel. Beautiful, well-maintained gardens. Spacious rooms. Spotlessly clean. Breakfast offers a generous buffet with a wide variety of choices. Definitely worth staying here!
