Lovely hotel in the old traditional style

Review by peterdlloyd Guildford, United Kingdom

Excellent stay again at this very well located hotel with beautiful gardens and great views. Excellent buffet breakfast and a very warm and friendly welcome from all of the staff. We really look forward to our next visit

Not a four star hotel

We were four couples who staten at this hotel, many of us are seasoned travellers. The hotel is classofies as a four star hotel. This is highly overrated, the standard is closer to a two star hotel...

Although they have swimmingpool, bars and a restaurant, the hotel standards are very poor. The rooms needed to be renovated/refurbished many, many years ago. The hotel is spilt into two different locations- makes it more difficult. The location of the lower part (sea front) of the hotel is good.

Unique old hotel with charm

Review by Wayne H Mobberley, United Kingdom

We loved this hotel set as it is in the side roads leading down to the port. It was overshadowed by other huge characterless monstrosities. If you prefer to stay in a modern complex then the slightly more modern Mar side near the sea is the one for you. The older side of the hotel has several unique ‘Quinta’ features, and a more ‘homely’ feel with beautiful gardens and pool. Receptionist here was extremely helpful helping us to print off the tedious documents for the journey home.

Excellent

Review by JABDover Dover, United Kingdom

We returned to this hotel after a gap of 13 years, and it did not disappoint. We always stay in the main Quinta, rather than the Mar; the distinction is made quite clear on their website, and it really depends on your own preference. You do need to realise that this is not a large, corporate, characterless hotel offering all the associated services such as pool service, pool bar, in-room coffee machine (although there is a kettle), but that is what makes it special; family-run, the owner even making an appearance at dinner from time to time to chat with the guests...

The location is ideal, within walking distance of Funchal centre. Perhaps we were lucky with our choice of room (Superior Sea-view), but it was immaculate and definitely not in need of overhaul. Presumably, if you choose to go to Madeira, you have already done your homework, and know that it is a mountainous island with steep slopes. The main road down into town is quite accessible to wheelchair users; however, there are parts of the hotel which could be difficult.

Great throwback low rise in the hotel zone

Review by Xcski441 New York City, New York

Only stayed one night in anticipation of catching the early morning ferry to Porto Santo the following day but we were very impressed by this low rise old style hotel surrounding gardens dwarfed by massive hi-rise monsters in the “hotel zone.” Our well appointed room had a patio, double sinks in the bathroom, and a fridge with mini bar offerings. Even though we only stayed for one night, we given a complimentary bottle of wine. Staff were all friendly and helpful and the hotel was a short walk from many excellent dining options.
