We visited this hotel in Mid August, for 11 nights. On arrival the hotel staff were really warm and friendly and showed you around the hotel. We were rather early so our room was not quite ready yet, so the staff gave us directions to the town as we wanted to make a quick visit for some lunch...
Upon returning to the hotel at 2:00pm our room was ready and our bags in the room.
The hotel is fitted out with lots of antique furniture and the style really is in keeping with what you would expect from a Manor House.
The room was of a very good size, almost like the size of 2 double bedrooms in other hotels. The balcony is also a very good size with a table and 2 chairs. The only one downside we found is that in the bathroom they still have baths and a shower, which then in turn has a shower curtain fitted, which is a little old fashioned and doesn’t leave a lot of room when showing. I think a little update to walk in showers would make a huge difference.
At the start of the holiday, we did have a few niggles, like the air con not working, but these were sorted out promptly and professionally by informing the hotel reception staff.
There are 2 swimming pools, one to the outside, which has around 20 beds. It also has a pool bar that sells nice drinks, snacks & lunches. The other pool is an indoor pool, located on top of the hotel block. When we visited though the weather was extremely hot, so we did not use this one.
The hotel gardens are next to a road, but we knew this when we booked by looking at the location on street view, this can’t be helped as it is in a city, there was also building work going on in a nearby hotel, which you only really heard from the outdoor pool, but it looked like it was coming to an end soon, the hotel said that it should all be complete in September as the hotel was planning to open in this month, so this really shouldn’t be much of a problem for too many future guests.
We stayed on a half board basis, so got breakfast and dinner included. The breakfast was all very good, their was a good continental selection along with hot food that was cooked upon ordering and served to your table, I had omelette most days and these were very nice.
The evening meals were of very good quality and presented well. Being a meat eater though and not eating fish, i did find the menu very limited, there was only 1 meat starter and a choice of 4 meat main dishes (1 of which was a curry) and 3 desserts, this would be fine if staying for a long weekend, but we stayed for 11 nights. So the food got very repetitive, so we had no choice but to dine out, as the menu never changed during our entire stay.
My partner had a hot stone massage in the spa and said this was very nice and relaxing, we also booked a few days trips with Rosie in a private taxi which we found good value and enabled us to visit most places on the island. The taxi driver recommended was so friendly and her English was superb, she took us to some really fantastic places, I would highly recommend doing this.
I have given this hotel a 4* review down to the very limited number of negative points I have made. In terms of UK star ratings I think this would be a 4 star and not quite a 5* but then we do have very high standards within the UK.
All in all I would recommend this hotel to future visitors and would stay here again myself but maybe just for a slightly shorter holiday.
We were guests at this hotel at the same time as the man who wrote the one star review. We are fortunate to be able to stay at luxury hotels at least six times a year. This was our experience. The room was spotless,I check because I have a weak immune system. The bed linen was crisp, fresh almost cuddly. The little touches such as flowers on the dressing table. Breakfast.Yes I always expect food of a high standard. Each day we drank fresh juices.I ate fresh fruit, yoghurt followed by eggs cooked to my specific wishes. My husband had cereal, nuts, fresh fruit followed by eggs or pancakes and some days he had fresh pastries and cakes.ALL served by polite staff. Nothing was too much trouble for the wonderful staff. I did experience the tail end of this mans grievances. It was not pleasant but I can assure you I did not hear any abuse from staff. This hotel is doing what most in the world are .They are trying to rebuild after this awful situation we have/are going through. We admire their ability to keep smiling and their total desire to give you the best possible experience.Well done. I could complain about the weight I put on because of the food! All part of the holiday. Thanks to all staff
We spent a week in Madeira, choosing the Sao Joao based on its location and positive reviews, and we were not disappointed.
Highlights: Staff were so welcoming and helpful! On arrival we were given a brief tour of the hotel before being taken to our room. They gave us helpful advice about places we planned to visit and helped us to arrange car hire (when it seemed to us that all the car hire companies on the island were either sold out or charging a fortune). Our room ('Jasmim' junior suite) was huge and comfortably furnished, with a lounge area, balcony and fridge. We were on the shady side of the hotel, which was perfect as it kept our room cool. Breakfasts were fantastic! Each morning we enjoyed the buffet breakfast with fresh fruits, breads, cheeses, meats, cereals, etc...
and then ordered from the menu giving a choice of waffles, pancakes, eggs, etc. I had something different every day and it was always delicious. I recommend the pancakes with wild berry ice cream and honey. Also the breakfast area looks out on a little garden area, so relaxing. The outdoor pool area is lovely, with a large number of loungers on the grass around the pool and then the pool bar next to it. The spa is great, we each enjoyed a 1hr full body massage and it was the best massage I've had in ages! The location is in a quiet part of Funchal and only a 10 minute walk to the busier centre. There is a main road close to the hotel which we didn't notice any noise from and it was very convenient for driving out of Funchal without having to negotiate the city centre.
Downsides: The indoor pool area is a little tired but we still enjoyed using it and it was generally just the two of us in it so it was almost like having a private pool. On a cloudy or windy day it's a great option to have. There is construction work going on at the Four Views hotel next door, which does lessen the relaxing atmosphere of the outdoor pool a little but we just set ourselves up on the side of the pool that looks away from the Four Views and it didn't bother us at all then. The noise was fairly low level so it was easy to forget about it and we couldn't hear it at all when we were indoors. The hotel is on a hill, like much of Funchal. We had no problems with this and found the pathways into the centre safe and easy to navigate but if you have any mobility issues it might be a factor to consider. The bus connections are very good though so you really don't have to walk if you don't want to.
All in all, the highlights hugely outweighed the downsides and we had a wonderful time at this hotel. I'm glad we stayed here and I would stay again.
Based on facts we went through, our experience was a nightmare in this hotel. If you are looking for a 5-star experience, stay clear of this hotel. As seasoned travellers and quality hotel and experience seekers, we fell into the trap of positive reviews and very polished website pictures...
Right on arrival, we realized that the service, the state of the infrastructure, the room and linen were way below what you would experience at an authentic 5-star hotel. We eventually cancelled our reservation and rebooked elsewhere in an authentic 5-star. Although we understood from one of their staff that there was no penalty, we were taken aback by a change of mind the next morning with a 5 day penalty which immediately became full reservation debit (including airport transfers) on my credit card. Interestingly, we never received a bill nor did we ever authorized the unilateral debit on the credit card. Breakfast was really a big surprise to us, no fresh fruit (in Madeira!), most stuff were not visibly edible. We eventually had bread (only fresh item) and omelette. What really struck us was the abusive and escalating language of the 5-star hotel through email exchanges. A trip for celebration in Madeira quickly became a nightmare during our entire 8-day stay. We eventually managed on return to have our bank refund us the full amount, on the basis of the fraud and scam we were victim of.
We have stayed at this 5 Quintinha many times over many years, its family owned and family run, we have recommended to many others who again have made many repeat visits, I was absolutely flabbergasted to read a recent 1 rated review, this is a 5 Quintinha not a 5* Hotel which is a world of difference, its more personal, the staff have very rarely changed in the 20 years we have visited. We were all invited ( all guests) for a free evening, free meal and wonderful entertainment for celebrating their 20th birthday a short time back. Andrè has even helped us locate architect and tradesmen when we decided to buy our longer term retirement villa on the island...
So I ask that what came first, chicken or egg, how were staff spoken too, breakfast has to be presented to match covid rules,so not usual buffet approach, but ask and they will bring it. Staff are curtesy and helpful exemplified. I hope this review shows the true nature of this quintinha and people book and enjoy as we have on many many occasions.
