What a perfect stay in Vila Baleira Funchal. The friendly staff, the good location in the Lido district (close to shops, bars and restaurants) and the lovely outdoor pool made my stay in the hotel very pleasant.
I parked my motorbike in the hotel parking garage to explore the island on a daily basis...
The hotel is perfectly situated for that. After a day of exploring it was lovely to chill at the pool and sip a drink from the poolbar.
I'd recommend the hotel to anyone visiting the beautiful island of Madeira.
During my time on the beautiful island of Madeira, I was fortunate enough to stay at the incredible Vila Baleira.
Situated roughly 30 minutes from the Funchal city centre, Vila Baleira is not only the perfect accommodation from which to explore the island, but also for relaxing after one of the many scenic hikes for which Madeira is famous.
Add to that a friendly staff, large outdoor pool with sun terrace, and great in-house dining options, and it is safe to say that Vila Baleira is one of the best budget-friendly picks in Funchal!
The positive aspects outweigh the negative ones. Of course if u didn't get a good deal and paid way more than u could have then I think u would have expected more. I was lucky to pick up a nice deal and overall was happy about that as most hotels in Funchal are quite expensive...
This was reasonably priced. Starting with the hotel appearance. It looks new and modern from the outside and that's exactly what u get when u walk into reception. Its bright witj a well designed layout. Reception isnt traditional but with two receptionists sitting by a glass table on laptops. Still the traditional welcome was there. The check in was quick and effortless. However the lifts seemed to take forever with no sign of stairs if u preferred that. The room was adequate equipped with a small fridge and a good shower. However there was no handle on the side of the bath for safety as some people may require this getting in and out of the bath should they have one. The room was cleaned daily and the bed was comfortable. The small balcony was facing out to the busy street. This was quite noisy with traffic but the sliding glass door drowned out the noise. So the bedroom was nice and the bathroom with added shampoos and shower wash was good. So far so good. Now to breakfast. Unfortunately the first impression could have been better. The restaurant lacks imagination and to me was very sterile. It could have had added features of Madeira instead of bland green wallpaper. This would have given it some Madeiran character and some life. I wasnt greeted with the familiar good morning but had a temperature gun pointed at my forehead. This was quite unexpected. I was a little jetlagged and was taken by surprise. After breakfast which comprised of soggy scrambled egg each morning and diluted orange juice. The brown bread and yoghurt was tasty along with the fruit and streaky bacon. Nothing special though in the cereals category. The coffee pots were always on the ready but not always full. After breakfast I asked if I'd be asked first before a lazer gun was pointed to my head as I believe this was the proper procedure. Bruno the head waiter couldnt have been nicer and apologised offering me a complimentary bottle of Madeiran wine which I took back to my room. To be honest I wasnt impressed with the dinner. The food looked very unappealing and I didnt enjoy what was on offer and I didnt like it. I went next door for the same price where it was ten times better. The roof top pool was very impressive though and makes up for a lot. The lunch there was really nice. The avocado salad was delicious as so was the icecream for afters. The service was friendly and the pool although small was perfect to have a swim and chill out by. The seaviews from the rooftop too was really lovely. So all in all the hotel scores plenty of good points. Its clean modern and the location is excellent. There are plenty of small supermarkets and restaurants nearby and it's just across the street from a bus shelter and local buses into Funchal and the airport. The Lido swimming baths are straight ahead down the hill where the promenade begins along the coastline. Staff too are friendly and helpful. Adequate and modern but room for improvement with the restaurant and food.
The Vila Baleira is a great place to both explore Funchal and the island and to relax after sightseeing. There is a great outdoor pool with chilled water and the bar where you can get amazing coctails. We stayed there on the full board basis and can honestly recommed the breakfasts and all the meals from the restaurant :)
Great restaurant with delicious meals, cozy room, pool with a nice view. The hotel was beyond our expectations! We have spent a great time here! We really recommend it to people who are looking for a highest standard and service.
