A small hotel located in the heart of Funchal, The Vine is a new hotel designed in a contemporary style, taking inspiration from the Vineyards of Madeira. Offering luxury and sophistication with a great range of facilities including Spa and a restaurant inspired by the Michelin starred Chef Antoine Westermann the hotel is the perfect choice for those looking to get the very best on a holiday to Madeira.
My husband and I stayed at the hotel in August. Our check in was quick and room available early. The room itself was lovely and specious...
The hotel is located at the top of the shopping centre, close to the local restaurants and tourist spots. It makes it easy to just pop outside for a coffee or dessert.
Breakfast was lovely with a well organised buffet (masks were enforced and single use gloves were provided). It had a good selection of cooked breakfast, bread, hams, cheeses and fruit. Tables were available inside and outside and the service was prompt.
The hotel has a most wonderful roof top terrace with stunning views of the city, it is definitely a highlight of your stay.
The only reason why I gave the hotel 4 stars was because of a awkward arrangement for pool towels. You pick up your towel (one for the whole stay) from the reception (not roof top) and you have to pay a cash deposit of €5 per towel. Card payments are not accepted and you are not informed of this at check in. The second reason is the shower, each time we had a shower, water leaked into the bathroom area and made a pool in front of the sink and the bath.
Despite that, we had a lovely stay and would recommend the hotel to other travellers
We were upgraded to a junior suite which was beautiful and very much appreciated. The hotel staff were very friendly nothing was too much trouble. The breakfast was your normal buffet breakfast but a good selection if you want omelette, poached or boiled eggs you only have to ask...
The hotel is on top of a shopping centre but don’t let this put you off it’s in a fantastic location. The rooftop pool and bar is an ideal spot for relaxing it may not be the biggest area however you could always find a sun lounger.
Quite simply an amazing hotel.
The staff were incredible - so helpful and friendly, always made you feel welcome and helped with any request we had.
The food is fantastic (especially the breakfast) and the pool / rooftop bar combination is perfect for relaxing on hot days.
We will 100% be coming back to this hotel as we couldnt find any faults with it and we had such a fantastic time here!
We were a bit unsure at first regarding The Vine and it being above a shopping centre but don’t let any of that put you off. We arrived outside by airport transfer and were shown inside by our driver. At reception you’re met by very friendly staff who after checking you in give you the card for your room...
We had a suite on the 4th floor with a view over the town of Funchal. Each room has a different layout and ours was a large room with all the usual things you would expect with this level of hotel. My wife’s only criticism of the room was there were not enough hangers or closet space, yet I found plenty !!! The rooms have mood lighting or again my wife’s view was it was a bit dark. Electric window blinds made it much darker which prompted the every day question on waking “what time is it ?”. Bear in mind that you are in a city, it’s like a city break so yes there is some night time noise to contend with but that said is anywhere quiet these days ? Remember you’re not in a Yurt in the Lake District or in the rain Forrest which by now is possibly only half the size it was when I first started this review. Breakfast is served either in your room or in the courtyard area and covers all the bases from full English to sawdust bird food for those wishing to not be on holiday and go to the gym every day which apparently is hidden in the basement area of the hotel so I’m led to believe. The roof bar and pool area is a great place to spend much of the day, the pool being heated and if that’s not enough there is an oversized full length (long and narrow) jacuzzi which you can spend some time in whilst looking at the hills behind the hotel. They have a wonderful invention called a cable car for that if you want to go and visit the botanical gardens after your continental cheese, ham and yoghurt breakfast. If you have opted for the half board basis then you will get to eat in The Uva restaurant which is also on the terrace roof. You will need a mobile phone to read the menu as it on a QR code although on a few nights they do have a specials menu which is presented to you before you order. HINT, you can mix and match the menus so a starter off the specials, a main off the QR and a desert of the specials, and any other variation you want, I’ll leave that up to you. The staff are well versed in what wines they have, where they are from (the wine not the staff) and what grape was used to make the wine. I suppose if pushed they could even get you the name of the person who trampled the grapes or grape to get the juice to make the wine etc. It is a nice place to sit and watch the sun go down before retiring to the roof bar area before you retire to bed. The location of the hotel is just on the edge of the old town which means it’s not to much of a walk if you have had a substantial breakfast to go and visit the flower market or the fish market next door. It’s also well placed for the restaurants in the old town. So the big question is, would we stay here again ? Yes of course we would, great price, great location, wonderfully attentive staff and they do a decent breakfast and dinner (tea).
We stayed here for a week in October and cannot recommend this hotel enough. The hotel is situated above a shopping centre but don’t let this put you off booking this hotel. Breathtaking panoramic views of Funchal and surrounding areas...
Great for pre dinner drinks at the rooftop bar. Faultless service from all of the staff at the Vine and made us feel very welcome. Rooms are spotlessly clean and have all the amenities required. We stayed in room 409, amazing shower, comfy bed, bath robes and slippers etc and had great views of Funchal. We will definitely be returning to this hotel!
