A very big resort with beautiful surroundings.Walkng distance from the beach front. The rooms are very big and comfortable but sadly it does not offer the usual coffee or tea bags in the room although there is a kettle in the room.Only ONE water bottle is provided as complimentry..any more and you have to pay for it.The hair dryer was not was not working at its maximum potential...just avoided it. The balcony was good with good outside view. The corridors outside the rooms could have done with a bit more lighting as it was quite dark. A very good selection in the morning breakfast area although some items were cold..eg beans..fried eggs and bacon. Did not require any room service so cannot comment. Large pool area with a good bar. Generally very clean so no complains. Very satisfied for the amount we paid for our 4 night stay. Generally very clean.
Food and drink We wanted the half board option so that we could take the hassle out of finding places to eat yet also explore other restaurants.
I enjoyed the breakfast the first two times (fresh eggs, pancakes, French toast, beans) but after that it got pretty boring, it was the same stuff every morning. Most mornings we got there at 8am but one morning we got there at 9am and it was so packed we decided to go elsewhere...
The dinners were more varied than the breakfast which we enjoyed most times. They have freshly grilled beef, chicken and pork on some days and for a couple of days they had a pasta station which was lovely. We weren’t that keen on the desserts though and there were some days we didn’t like most things in the buffet.
On the most part, the other guests were very considerate with the social distancing, wearing masks and making use of gloves / hand sanitiser. However, the thing that bugged us A LOT was the amount of guests that didn’t bother to tuck in their chairs when they got up for the buffet. We were constantly pushing in chairs to get to our seats, so frustrating. We also had to wait to be seated, which we understood was necessary, but it sometimes took a while for anyone to get to us.
We tried out the two hotel a lá carte restaurants available: Mamma Mia and Casa das espetadas. Both were pretty good, great service and selection of food. We particularly enjoyed the espetadas because it was fun seeing our skewers hung up and pulling our meat off them. The staff at the espetadas restaurant were particularly attentive and quick to serve us too. However, we like to sit outside when we eat because the weather in Madeira is amazing, unfortunately they didn’t give us that option at Casa das espetadas. But otherwise, it was lovely.
Another note about all restaurants for dinner, drinks are not included in the price. Seems a bit silly, I think that they should at least let you have soft drinks and the coffee machine on at dinner. But I guess it’s another opportunity for them to make money. The drinks are probably slightly more expensive than other restaurants outside but not terrible.
The room was always kept clean, very friendly housekeeping service. We always greeted them with “bom dia” every morning! We had a premium room so our bed was extra large, it was very wide but not so long. We appreciated the double sinks in the bathroom but the bathroom was a little bit dated in our view, could do with updating.
Some of the lights in the room didn’t turn on either.
The view was fantastic. We FaceTimed our family back in England and they were super impressed with the pool and sea views.
We loved that there were always free sun loungers, could be because we went in September - October rather than peak summer holidays. It was nice to relax and there was always a guy serving drinks by the pool. We could also swap our towels for fresh ones by the pool very easily. You could also swim in the sea as there is direct sea access.
There was a wedding on the Saturday in between the pools which was both beautiful and entertaining for the other guests. Then on the Sunday, during lunchtime, there was a massive lunch party. It lasted a long time and lots of people left the poolside because of the noise. I think the hotel should avoid doing events during peak sun lounging hours, maybe just keep them to 7pm onwards as they disrupt relaxation.
Lifts Okay so this was a bit annoying. The lifts were working the whole time we were there but because of covid restrictions (which we totally appreciate), there was the rule of 2 people per lift max. However, there were only 2 lifts for our tower and when we got in the lift, they still stopped at every floor (where people had pushed the button) and we had to constantly apologise that we couldn’t let them in. We wondered if they could reprogramme the lifts to not stop so many times. This would also make the lift journeys a lot quicker.
It was also difficult to get to the pool. Because we had to go down to floor 1. Then walk down a slope to get to another lift to get to -2 which is pool access.
Gym The gym has loads of great equipment, pretty much everything you need for a good gym session. They also had regular exercise classes, with lots of variety to choose from. I went to a Zumba class on Saturday morning and the instructor was so friendly, energetic and made a real effort to get everyone into it. Fully recommend booking a class.
We did feel that we the gym booking system wasn’t explained to us and you couldn’t find info about it unless you ask at reception. Also, the gym is only open 10am-1pm on a Sunday.
We stayed in this hotel for a week. I have to agree with a previous review which said the Hotel was soul less. The hotel was spotlessly clean and we found the staff to be very friendly...
One of the receptionists was really helpful when we had problems booking our covid test. He rang Madeira Safe for us and resolved our problem which we were very thankful for.
The sea view room was really nice, had no complaints with the room at all.
The food in general was good but I have to make fellow coeliacs aware that the gluten free labelling was not very good. The hot food on the evening buffet was very limited. Very good for vegetarians but not very good for people who require gluten free. I did point this out to a staff member who then went into the kitchen and bought me a selection of fish which was luke warm and inedible.
None of the desserts were labelled gluten free, even though quite a few of them were but to find out you had to ask a member of staff. One morning they seemed to have forgotten to label any of the foods.
There was only one bar open in the evening which we found disappointing for a hotel of this size.
All in all, we had a lovely holiday just wish the food selection had been better for people with special dietary requirements.
The whole experience of staying at the VidaMar was wonderful, a joy for the week we were there. With four restaurants to visit and a couple of bars also, it had everything you needed to stay fed and hydrated without getting bored. The seaside pool area was fab to take in the glorious weather and fantastic views, albeit a fun adventure to find it as it's a short walk and lift ride from the bedrooms...
Everyone couldn't help enough, with a great grasp of English making communications easy (although it was fun to learn a little Portuguese). The only drawback was the speed of the wifi, which I ended up passing on for the benefits of 4G, but this did convince me to spend less time on my phone and more time taking in the sea view. A wonderful place and thoroughly recommended.
Really great stay at the Vidamar good choice of restaurant options with the Italian Mama Mia exceptional food and the Traditional Portugues with great service and quality tuna and beef
Hotel well looked after and staff take car in looking after guests 👌
