The Vidamar Resorts Madeira is a glittering jewel of a hotel – its clean and contemporary fascia and décor give it a very prestigious look and feel. Situated on the West side of Funchal, the island's capital, it gives easy access to the fabulous city, and from there, the Old Town in the East – where you'll find so many of the city's best attractions. As you would expect of one of Madeira's foremost hotels, picturesque ocean views are abundant. Just step into the beautiful hotel gardens and you can look straight out to sea.
Funchal looks like one of the world's foremost garden paradises – and it's well within reach of us Europeans. So isn't it wonderful that hotels like the Vidamar Resorts Madeira manage to maintain such impossibly high standards? One might think it would be impossible to match those views, or that staying in any hotel would feel like shutting yourself from all the beauty out there. That's certainly not the case at the Vidamar Resorts Madeira.
This is a light, airy and open hotel and totally given over to your comfort. Rooms are truly luxurious and have private bathrooms, as well as fabulous balconies overlooking the gardens and the ocean. Featuring cable TV, phone, refrigerator and more, you'll have all the facilities you need.
Holidaymakers to Madeira will certainly have ample opportunities to swim – and the Vidamar Resorts Madeira provides some of the best. You can choose from a superb indoor pool and a dazzling array of three outdoor pools, as well as the amazing Mar Sea Spa Thalasso facility. Not to mention the ocean itself –- easily accessed from the hotel.
Sporty types are similarly well catered for with a variety of seasonal watersports activities, squash, a multipurpose sports field and fitness centre. The hotel also provides a Teen's club, providing a wide range of activities including computer games, volleyball and more. Guests are also entitled to discounted rates at both Golf Courses (available locally) with transfers (subject to availability).
The Vidamar Resorts Madeira a five star hotel in a five star location. Your stay there will be luxurious, laidback and full of that special kind of Madeira magic. Half Board Dine Around offers a range of dining options & allows guests to sample a variety of cuisines at a selection of restaurants.

This is a very fine hotel. We had rooms on tenth floor with splendid views, well serviced. The staff were almost all friendly and even kind. Exception some of those looking after the pool area. The towel management process is unnecessarily complex and they can be snarky if you don’t comply exactly as they wish. Not 5 star. The pier areas by which one can have a sea swim are badly in need of resurfacing and access to the sea could be made much more straightforward. Excellent lifeguard supervision provided, however.
The restaurant is top class, great food, efficient service. The evening buffet is very good. Live music most nights in the bar really good. Reception staff top class. Our airport departure taxi booked the day before as 15 minutes late - they could not have been more helpful or concerned even though it was middle of the night.
I agree with those who criticise the lack of aesthetics- the resort is a vast space and has a warehouse almost clinical feel to it. This could be improved upon. Overall, I would return.
Superb location right on the sea and the food was excellent Couple of little niggles like no mirror in the actual bedroom and a broken soap dispenser but dealt with promptly by Simone in guest relation She was an absolute credit to the hotel and recommended Mozart restaurant in the old town for my wife’s birthday Couldn’t have suggested anywhere better Till the next time
This was our fourth visit over several years. The Vidamar still meets our expections. It is a large building and as others have said it is quite plain, however it is very clean and airy. The rooms are large and kept very clean. The views from the upper floors are amazing, over the grounds, the pools and out over the ocean. Breakfast and dinner are both self service. There is a huge selection for breakfast, from cereal, bakery, fruit and cooked items. Eggs are cooked to order. There is even sparkling wine to go with your fruit juice! Dinner again has a huge selection from cold dishes, salads and a selection of hot dishes. Each meal there is a special cooked by a chef, often fish or meat. Finishing with lots of different desserts and biscuits and cheese. One benefit of the hotel is the direct access to the ocean from the pool area. The pools never seem crowded and whenever you go there is always a lounger available. The biggest asset of the hotel is the staff, all are so helpful, pleasant and seem to enjoy interacting with guests. We hope to return to the Vidamar again soon!
Wonderful family holiday at the Vidamar. Highlights were the Portuguese and Italian restaurants, the spectacular infinity swimming pools (and the nice cool indoor pool perfect for cooling off), the friendliness of all staff, how clean the hotel was, the very safe balcony off our room, and an amazing massage by Katherine in the spa. A brilliant laid back holiday in close proximity to Funchal. Would recommend the Santa Caterina park if you have children - a 5 mins taxi ride away. Download ‘Bolt’ app for hassle free taxis. Agree with other reviews that the hotel is a bit conference centre like, but we spent so little time in the lobby / corridors etc that it didn’t matter at all. We’ll be back next year:)
We had a really lovely stay at the VidaMar in Funchal and would definitely recommend it.
The staff were all so friendly, helpful and professional, which made us feel very welcome from the start.
We were particularly impressed with the food. We ate at both the Ocean Restaurant and the Pizzeria and everything we had was delicious. I’m gluten-free, so I was really pleased with how well catered for I was. There was plenty of choice and the staff were very helpful and understanding about my dietary requirements.
The hotel itself has some great facilities. We really enjoyed having the choice of indoor and outdoor pools, and there were plenty of sun beds, so we never had any trouble finding somewhere to relax. The spa and pool tables were also great additions. Overall, the hotel had a lovely warm and relaxed feel to it.
We were also happy with the location. We didn’t mind walking into Funchal, which took around 30–40 minutes. The walk back took a little longer as there’s a small hill to climb, but it was absolutely fine and we enjoyed the walk.
All in all, we had a fantastic holiday and really enjoyed our time at the VidaMar. Great staff, lovely food, excellent facilities and a very relaxing atmosphere. We would definitely stay here again. Thank you for making our stay in Madeira very memorable.
