So isn't it wonderful that hotels like the Vidamar Resorts Madeira manage to maintain such impossibly high standards? One might think it would be impossible to match those views, or that staying in any hotel would feel like shutting yourself from all the beauty out there. That's certainly not the case at the Vidamar Resorts Madeira.

This is a light, airy and open hotel and totally given over to your comfort. Rooms are truly luxurious and have private bathrooms, as well as fabulous balconies overlooking the gardens and the ocean. Featuring cable TV, phone, refrigerator and more, you'll have all the facilities you need.

Holidaymakers to Madeira will certainly have ample opportunities to swim – and the Vidamar Resorts Madeira provides some of the best. You can choose from a superb indoor pool and a dazzling array of three outdoor pools, as well as the amazing Mar Sea Spa Thalasso facility. Not to mention the ocean itself –- easily accessed from the hotel.

Sporty types are similarly well catered for with a variety of seasonal watersports activities, squash, a multipurpose sports field and fitness centre. The hotel also provides a Teen's club, providing a wide range of activities including computer games, volleyball and more. Guests are also entitled to discounted rates at both Golf Courses (available locally) with transfers (subject to availability).

The Vidamar Resorts Madeira a five star hotel in a five star location. Your stay there will be luxurious, laidback and full of that special kind of Madeira magic. Half Board Dine Around offers a range of dining options & allows guests to sample a variety of cuisines at a selection of restaurants.

Very enjoyable stay.

Excellent hotel. Comfortable with friendly staff . Immaculately clean everywhere...

The facilities are excellent. The pool area are huge well spaced and plenty of chairs. The pool restaurant is recommended for lunch. The spinning classes are well worth a try. Only slight disappointment was the evening meals with bland food. My advice is swap to lunch and eat out .

Excellent stay

Review by Rob H Cheltenham, United Kingdom

We were upgraded to a large 10th floor suite with sea views which was a very pleasant surprise. Well equipped, huge bed in separate bedroom. Plenty of hot water for bath/shower...

Toiletries provided with hair dryer in bathroom. Impressive choice of food for breakfast, including sparkling wine for those who wanted it. The outdoor tables were popular. Buffet in evening was well stocked with wide range of food, though gluten free selection relatively small. Spa a nice treat and water front pools had plenty of sun beds. Mostly we were walking and would definitely recommend the hotel for its position (directly in front of sea and easy to walk into centre), amenities and well maintained grounds.

OK, but not 5 star

Review by andyp1966 Yorkshire, United Kingdom

Requested a modernised room both prior to travel and at check in, and lady at reception told this is what had been allocated. Sadly, the room didn't meet with our hopes or expectations, probably 3 star at best. That said, there was a welcoming bottle of wine and small cakes for our anniversary, which may have made it difficult to change rooms...

These were obviously appreciated. Room was soulless, everything was white, no colour / pictures on the walls and quite dated. Had the dine around option, all meals at the huge buffet restaurant, which was decent and plentiful, if not always hot. Could get very busy at times, sometimes waiting 5 minutes to be seated. Staff very helpful, once seated. Huge outdoor pool areas, but so difficult to access these via the two lifts. Again, the pool areas lacked character and atmosphere. Hotel is in great position with many bars and restaurants within walking distance, with centre of Funchal an easy bus ride away. Not what we expected I'm afraid, won't be rushing back. Had a week around at the Savoy Palace when we left, which felt as though we'd entered another world altogether.

Decent

Hotel has very views, is clean, and located in a great area. With that said, I found the staff unfriendly and unhelpful. I don’t know if it is because I was traveling solo and appear young, but I spoke to four different staff members at the reception desk throughout my stay and all of them were quite dismissive and rude...

One night I went up to a staff member to ask about possibly arranging a car to pronto Moniz and she turned to me and said “what?” when I approached her before I could even ask a question. I was so taken aback I walked away and got my travel companions staying at a different hotel to arrange a car through their concierge.

Also ladies please note the hotel has no hair conditioner. I usually bring my own but forgot this trip so not having even the basic small hair conditioner bottle that all hotels carry was disappointing. When I called the front desk to ask if they had any, I was told “whatever is in your room is what we have” and was then hung up on.

I hope to go to Madeira again, but I would stay at Cliff Bay next time. My travel companions stayed there and I spent a lot of time at that hotel. It is more expensive but worth it in my opinion.

Lovely room with sea views, but hotel lacks character.

Review by Beebonnet Thetford, United Kingdom

The staff at the hotel are well trained and very helpful, we found the restaurant staff to be particularly good. The hotel was very clean and well maintained. Some people would probably like the sterile almost utilitarian look of the hotel, but we felt it lacked character...

The entertainment which is on 4 nights out of seven is very low key, there was only one bar (which was nicely decorated, but very quiet). The swimming pools were lovely and there were always plenty of comfortable sunbeds available. The biggest problem we found was the evening buffet, the breakfast was excellent but the choices available in the evening in my opinion were very limited. They offer a dine around option at 2 restaurants just outside the hotel, but in high season I think they would be very busy and maybe difficult to book. There were no organised activities while we were there which we felt would have added to our stay. Overall, it was a pleasant stay because of the room, the view the pools and the location, but if visiting the beautiful island of Madeira again, we would probably find a different hotel.
