⭐ FIRST 24-HOUR REVIEW: OCCIDENTAL JANDÍA MAR, FUERTEVENTURA ⭐
Unfortunately, the photos online do not reflect our first impressions of the hotel in reality.
We have been here for our first 24 hours, and although there are some positives, we have already been left disappointed, particularly by the food, customer service, facilities for children and the suitability of the environment for neurodivergent guests.
✅ THE PROS
• Cleanliness: The hotel is a little dated, but it is clean, and the housekeeping team appear to be doing a good job. Credit where it’s due!
• Swimming pools: Having several pools is a real bonus. They don’t seem to get overly busy or packed, and we have been able to find a sunlounger without too much difficulty. This has been one of the best things about our stay so far.
❌ THE CONS
🍽️ The food is already a huge letdown.
As a family, we have really struggled with the food options during our first day. Compared with other hotels we have stayed in, the buffet selection seems quite limited, and the options for children are particularly disappointing.
The kids are practically surviving on chips. The chicken nuggets look even more processed than McDonald’s, and plenty of the chips have been undercooked.
At dinner tonight, the main meal options all appeared to contain either fish or pork — even the pizza. For anyone who doesn’t eat either, the alternatives were essentially plain spaghetti with olive oil and chips, cheese and salad.
For a hotel catering to families, the lack of variety is disappointing. If you have children who are fussy eaters, have sensory sensitivities or struggle with unfamiliar foods, I would seriously think twice before booking all-inclusive here.
Honestly, if I had known what the food was going to be like, I wouldn’t have booked this hotel at all.
🔊 The buffet area can be very noisy and overstimulating.
The buffet area is busy and noisy, with lots of background conversation, movement, plates, cutlery and general activity. This can be extremely overwhelming for neurodivergent people, particularly children or anyone with sensory sensitivities.
There does not appear to be much consideration for guests who may need a quieter or calmer dining environment. The combination of the noise, limited food choices and busy surroundings has made mealtimes particularly difficult for our family.
👨👩👧👦 Not particularly neurodivergent-family friendly.
As a family with additional sensory needs, food and the surrounding environment are already things we have to consider carefully when travelling. The limited buffet choices and noisy dining area have made this stay more difficult than it needed to be, even within the first 24 hours.
I would not recommend this hotel for neurodivergent families relying on the standard all-inclusive food offering unless you have checked the menus and considered the dining environment carefully beforehand.
🙄 Customer service leaves a lot to be desired.
The reception staff have not come across as particularly friendly, and at times, we have felt more like an inconvenience than paying guests.
At check-in, my son’s girlfriend was given a children’s wristband. I had already explained that we had two adults and one child in each room, yet I was then told the system showed she was under 18. I had to get her ID out to prove that she was an adult.
Mistakes happen, but the way the situation was handled, combined with the lack of friendliness throughout check-in, did not create a good first impression.
🛏️ Room comfort and facilities could be better.
We arrived to find only a sheet on the bed rather than a duvet. It gets chilly overnight, so this was not ideal. It’s a small detail, but one that should be considered when preparing rooms for guests.
The televisions in the rooms also have no smart capabilities, so you are limited to BBC One, BBC Two, ITV, Channel 4 and BBC News (if you want to watch TV in English) There is no option to log into streaming services or watch anything else, which is particularly disappointing when travelling with children and spending time in the room.
🎭 Evening entertainment is disappointing for families.
The mini disco runs from 5:30 pm to 6:00 pm, which is also when the pools close. Once that finishes, there is no further children’s entertainment until the evening programme starts at 9 pm.
The evening entertainment appears to be mainly music shows, with limited options for younger children. That is a long gap for children to fill, especially when the pools are closed and the main entertainment does not start until much later.
A little more variety, earlier family entertainment and more activities suitable for younger children would make a real difference.
⭐ MY FIRST 24-HOUR VERDICT
The hotel has potential. It is clean, the housekeeping team appear to be doing a good job, and the multiple pools make it easier to relax without fighting for a sunlounger.
However, the limited food choices, noisy and overstimulating buffet area, disappointing customer service, lack of suitable entertainment for children, limited television facilities and basic comfort issues have already made a poor first impression.
Would I return? Based on our first 24 hours, I would not rush back. In fact, knowing what I know now, I would not book this hotel at all unless I was prepared to pay extra for an All-Inclusive Plus upgrade.
This is only our first 24-hour review, and our experience may change during the rest of our stay. Other guests may have a different experience, but I can only review what we have experienced ourselves so far.
We had a wonderful holiday with the Premium All-Inclusive package – definitely the best choice!
The entertainment was enjoyable, and all the staff were professional, knowledgeable, and extremely friendly.
A special thank you to Camilla at reception, who, in addition to being very knowledgeable and professional, always made us feel welcome and comfortable.
The buffet offered a great variety of delicious food, and the rooms were spacious.
The beach is just a 15-minute walk away, with very few people and an absolutely stunning sea!
Thank you again for everything! We had an amazing stay!
Great stay overall, clean rooms, good entertainment but quite late if you have children with you, food had a good selection. The rooms need a kettle and a couple of cups
Hotel was beautiful, staff were really friendly and the food/drinks were perfect, especially for someone who is quite a picky eater they had some great options, and the snack bar also had really good food options. We had a sea view room and the view was lovely! Double room was so so spacious and had everything we needed. Pools were lovely and weather was perfect and that’s in October! Saw some comments about it being difficult to get sun-loungers, we had absolutely no trouble at all, even when we didn’t get to the pool until 12/1 there were still lots available, maybe that’s because of the time of year. Hotel is very large so maybe would not be good for people who struggle to get around. Lovely location, less than a 10 minute walk from a lovely beach, although it is down a massive hill so getting back wasn’t very enjoyable! Entertainment was great, we had singers and acrobats which was fun, although they did start late so it was quite noisey if you went to bed before 10/11. The entertainment crew were great, was nice to not get pressured into joining in with the games if we didn’t want too, unlike we have had before. Shop was perfect and nice to have on site, had everything you could need and also had some great souvenirs.
Few downsides, the key cards stopped working a few times, they told us it’s because they were near a phone, however we did not have them anywhere near our phones! Went to reception and they fixed it straight away so not that big of a deal. Our room did have a roof leak as it rained quite heavily overnight. We called reception to let them know and the lady just said “well yes because it rained heavily”. Luckily we weren’t actually that bothered as it only happened once, but they did say they would come and change the sheets as the leak landed straight onto the bed, the sheets were not changed once during our stay, they said the sheets only get changed after 7 days unless you ask, but it was still not done for us. So that was quite a let down. Also our towels were not changed once during our stay, it says to leave them on the hook if you want them changed which we did but they still weren’t. When in the shop, the guy came and told us they were closing now, we asked if we could now pay and he said yes, he then went to the doors and locked us in! We asked to be let out and he did. There are no sun umbrellas with the sun loungers, so it is constant sun and no shade unless you manage to grab a lounger under the cabanas.
we have had the best time, the hotel has been amazing, with fabulous entertainment in the day and evenings for the adults. Kids club has been amazing for my daughter, she has loved the Barcy club and the staff running it. we have spent 2 weeks at the hotel and have loved it. the rooms were lovely and kept clean, food was delicious in restaurant and at snack bar. drinks were fab and how you can get as many as you want is good too. cant recommend it enough. we are hoping to return next year! thank you.
