We arrived at the Suites Jardin Dorado after finding out that the original holiday booking at another resort was cancelled by mistake and we were left stranded. Contacted Love Holidays and they tried to get our booking reinstated but fortunately for us they didn’t as it turned out. Love Holidays found the Suites Jardin Dorado and we were so shattered as my wife has Terminal Cancer the last thing we wanted was more stress but once we got to this resort they greeted us with a smile and gave us water while we waited for our room...
Once our room was quickly sorted out, we were really pleased to now be able to relax. The reception sorted out a kettle and took away the small cooler fridge and installed a proper cold fridge and this was done within 10 minutes. I have decided to put this review on here highlighting the staff employed at the resort, who were absolutely first class, hard working, warm and very pleasant and are a credit to their employers and we would like to thank them all. The resort is just 5/6 minutes from Maspalomas Beach and 7 minutes from Holiday World. The Yumbo Centre in Playa de Ingles is roughly 7/8 minutes away 4/5 euros by taxi where the are loads of shops bars restaurants, chemist/doctor etc. If your going to Holiday World try walking 4 minutes walk to a Spanish diner called Pepe Cheringos as the food is cooked fresh and is a third of the cost than at Holiday World. Example a large burger and chips, 20 pieces of buffalo wings and chips 2 pints and a frappe and a Baileys 23 euros roughly £20. A pint in Holiday World is 5 euros the average meal in Holiday World is roughly 50/60 euros for two people. Also behind Pepe Cheringo’s is a large park with a lake picnic area and a concert area. Overall a great place to go. The Suites Jardin Dorado has an all inclusive offer. But personally we just had the free breakfast which was very very good with food cooked in front of you. There is a microwave which I used for warming my food ie beans. We heard from other guests that the all inclusive meals were a mismatch of items and most people said that the would not book an all inclusive again. Now as we didn’t go all inclusive I am only saying what other people told us, but as you know everyone has their own opinion on things. There is no evening entertainment and the place is quite empty at night and during the day. The place is spotless and just outside the entrance to Suite Jardin Dorado is a bus stop that take you into Maspalomas and on the other side of the road Is a Supermarket nicely priced. The golf course raps around the complex and it really is relaxing oh I nearly forgot there is a pool table, tennis table, a kids play area with climbing frame, a kids slide & play springy things to amuse them. For those who want to go into the pool but don’t like the to use the steps their is gentle slopping steps you just walk into the pool. You also have a private enclosed courtyard where you can sit soak up the sun or dry your washing on the pull out washing line. Enjoy your stay and I hope you like the review. The temperature ranged between 26 to 34 degrees during our weeks stay.
Pros Lovely setting. Clean rooms, clean pool and plenty of sun beds. 35 minute flat walk to the beach. The free hotel bus to the beach has been cancelled due to Covid but you can call a taxi from reception. We arrived late evening and they had saved food for us which was very kind. Standard (if a little small) all inclusive food selection - 1 restaurant only but varying options each night...
Always a salad bar. Big bottles of water available at the bar if you are all inclusive which is fab. Coffee machine available all day serving coffee, tea, hot chocolate. Fairly covid safe. Masks to be worn when at the bar and in the restaurant when getting food. However, due to staff shortages (see below) covid safety wasn’t always maintained.
Cons Extremely short staffed. At times the staff seemed annoyed with having to serve you especially if like us you have a large family and you ask for 5 drinks.
Only 1 bar attendant so expect to queue at times and on occasions it’s not even staffed so expect to stand and wait.
Slow to clear tables and bring drinks with your meal.
Room wasn’t cleaned on occasions.
Have to clear your own tables on occasions to be able to sit down - not very covid secure.
Plastic straws!! Plastic cups!!! Not good.
We had two rooms. 1 with a key code lock and 1 with a key as the key code lock wasn’t working. The key code lock for the room is very temperamental- you can easily lock yourself out and then have to wait 5 minutes for it to reset. Arrived back to the room one day to find a key left in our door. Seems that housekeeping had left it in the door after fixing the shower gel holder. Extremely careless. Anyone could have let themselves in and taken our belongings and cash, passports etc.
Nothing available in minibar in rooms.
Got back from here this week and I want to be really kind because my wife and I love the place so much. The resort is clearly still recovering from covid. The staff that were on duty were all kind, helpful, polite and happy, they couldn't have done more for us. But, because there are not as many on duty as there would normally be there times when there was no one at the bar to serve drinks. There were also not as many guests as normal and as such the buffet wasn't as varied as on our previous visit...
But there was no dip in quality and everything available was tasty and filling. We had a few issues with our apartment. There aren't enough sockets installed. We requested a kettle and ironing board but the only available socket was behind the large sofa/pullout bed. There was even a socket to plug in the table lamp! An extension lead, with about six sockets on it, was brought to our apartment after I visited reception. The TV only had 4 English speaking channels (no BBC or Sky news or movie channels), but the signal was very poor and used to go off on those channels at about 6pm every night. Now I know we don't go on holiday to constantly watch TV but its nice to catch up with the news now and again or watch a movie if the weather changes and you can't sit around the pool. The door lock was badly fitted and there was a piece sticking out that was razor sharp. We only noticed this when my wife ripped her pool dress on it one morning. I went to reception to report it and shown the man there a picture of the torn dress. He told me that he would inform management but we got no response. One of the repair team came to repair the door, but could only patch it up with a piece of rubber to limit the chance of further damage. The door locks have been very badly fitted. I tried to phone reception, about one of our issues, from the phone in our apartment but could not get a dialing tone. When I questioned this at reception I was told that the phones don't work! Again, because of staff shortages, there was very rarely anyone available in reception after 6pm, so if you needed a taxi to Playa las Ingles or Maspalomas you had to phone for one yourself. There is also no free shuttle bus into the resorts during the day at the moment. As I said at the beginning of this review I wanted to be kind because the hotel is still very clean and welcoming. There is a new sitting/relaxing area on the roof of the restaurant. The toilets adjacent to the restaurant have been updated and modernised. Again, repeating myself, the bar/restaurant staff are wonderful. Friendly, helpful and very hard working. Because our pick up for the return to the airport was 08:35 we were allowed into the restaurant 15 minutes early, at 07:45, to get some breakfast before leaving. I would still highly recommend this accommodation to anyone who wants a nice relaxing holiday away from the hustle and bustle of the nearby resorts and would like to think we may return when life is back to a more acceptable form of normality!
We have just had a lovely, peaceful week away here. Our package holiday was changed three times from 2020 due to the pandemic, when Maspalomas came up as a substitution we went for it.
Staff: I found the gentlemen more friendly, the ladies were a little more standoffish...
Gentleman on reception, was always warm and and welcoming when he checked us in, checked us out, and saw us at the bar in the evenings. Had a laugh with Juan, I am still laughing at Jose yelling CIAO with his car horn as he drove off into the distance while we waited outside for our transfer. If you bother to make an attempt at Spanish or just smile and say hello or thank you, I am sure it makes all the difference, they do really long days!
Bungalows: Spacious, and clean. We had a lovely walk in shower, great pressure, great drying area out the back, helped by air flow from the air con condenser hitting it too. Beds were brilliant, no dips in the mattress, slept like a baby all week. I think we found one english channel on the TV but who goes on holiday to watch TV? Heard no noise from anyone passing - except the couple next door that helped themselves to our chairs in the middle of the night, made us jump - they put them back the following evening. We were fortunate to be able to keep our Bungalow for our late departure, if we had to check out at midday, it would have been an issue because there is no where to hide from the sun or heat once you are checked out.
Quite a few of the units are privately owned, looks like the owners appear to be there on a weekend, then Monday to Thursday it goes quiet again.
Wifi was free and worked well in all areas, we had no problems connecting to it.
Poolside - plenty of beds, there is a no reserve policy, to be honest it was so quiet we never needed to. A few did on our last day and these were swiped by the staff leading to an amusing showdown between them and the staff. Smoking is not permitted by the poolside, they are asked to move away from the beds which was good for us non-smokers, two french lads didn't think this applied to them though, but everyone else was adhering to it. Pool itself was great, it was baking hot so glad of a cold plunge. Spa bed and Jacuzzi were out of action for a day or two but then fixed. Female lifeguard on our first day was constantly going round wiping the showers and hand rails down with anti-bac, her male counterparts did not for the rest of the week.
Drinks - we were All Inclusive. We are not big drinkers butI had seven glasses of wine (beer for the husband) we found these took no affect On the bright side at least there was no headache the next day! But one glass of Prosecco at home knocked us both sideways on our return haha :) There were different Gins for those on AI to those paying for it which tends to be the norm. Certainly no usual "spanish measures" the Gin and Tonic or Vodka and Fanta didn't have any affect on me at all so I stayed on wine.
Food - it's buffet, and like all buffet's it doesn't keep it's heat. It's a small restaurant, but they appeared to have enough choice, husband is a picky eater and he managed, it was different each evening, although we did eat out some nights. Lunch and breakfast were pretty much the same daily.
Location - it's about a 30 minute walk to the beach, about the same to Playa Del Ingles (although would advise get a taxi EUR 5 then walk back, it saves walking up the hill!). We did a lot of walking, which kept the calories at bay. We had planned to spend more time on the beach (had purchased a beach shelter to go with us) but husband got burnt on our first day so he kept to the pool and shade of the palm trees after that. Melonaras has some good restaurants. Supermarket just opposite the hotel, reasonably priced.
Would I go back? Absolutely.
After the pandemic we didn't want a manically busy hotel, so this suited us. Husband spent the week saying "it's lifeless" then by our final day (a Saturday) he said I had a point about a quiet escape, he felt there was then too many people.
Being in a bungalow meant we weren't woken in the night by drunks passing our room or at 8am by maids in cleaning cupboards. The hotel staff were hot on mask wearing, everyone was wearing them from sunbed to bar or bungalow.
Probably wouldn't book all inclusive again, would go bed and breakfast then go out for our meals / drinks, or put a bottle of wine in the fridge.
Where to start hotel is ok pool area is great the staff are fantastic the cleaners work hard every day they clean your room now the bad points the room is ok just not enough plug sockets no tea making facilities but if you do require them reception will give you a kettle and two cups the all you can eat buffet is no where up to standard food is luke warm at best only few dishes a night plenty of salad though cash is not acceptable on sight either pay wen you leave or pay by card pint beer 4 euros taxis are cheap roughly 5 euros to anywhere with in 5 miles there is a shuttle bus to maspalomas and playa de ingles quite regularly nice restaurants at both places so it easy to get around if you dont want to hire a car best beach is maspalomas but be warned the further you go up the beach the less clothes you require all in all gran canaria is lovely place to visit but not at this hotels amenities leave alot to be desired
