Puerto Rico

This excellent hotel boasts breathtaking views over the harbour, the bay and out to the open sea from its elevated position in Puerto Rico on the southwestern coast of the holiday island of Gran Canaria. It features 2 outdoor pools, a sports centre, kid's club, restaurant and various bars. The Europa Shopping Centre is situated right next to the hotel; the next beach is within walking distance.

Due to the surrounding area and the number of steps around the hotel, it may not be suitable for those with mobility difficulties.

Review by gilly1971 Leeds, United Kingdom

We booked an all inclusive stay for one week. Upon arrival, check-in was swift and the amenities were explained. It's a huge complex with lots of steps up and down the varying levels. Our premium room was fabulous. Large and spacious with an amazing view and large well equipped terrace, fully furnished. The furniture was basic but adequate. Spotlessly clean - and the cleaning staff were so friendly and hardworking. The WiFi is rubbish. It connected in the reception area, but dropped out everywhere else...

I had to purchase extra data - very poor. The all inclusive was disappointing. A good selection of drinks, but the cocktails were premixed diluted cheapies, not nice at all. Glasses were only allowed in the bar area, if you walked away from this area, drinks had to be transferred into flimsy paper cups, which bent and crumpled as you held them. The bar staff were generally friendly. The food choices were good, albeit varying from lukewarm to cold. The chefs were lovely and friendly. The animation/entertainment was rubbish, with no atmosphere and limited entertainment. Nothing happening around the pool, apart from waterpolo on a couple of days and running along a plastic mat. The entertainment guy did not come over and speak once, and seemed to spend time with the non British guests. In the evening there was not much happening. An occasional singer for an hour between 9pm and 10pm - "then nothing. No customers in the Bar in the evening so no atmosphere. Thank God, for the Europa Centre across the road with bars with atmosphere. Spent most nights there to find most of the British guests were already in. This works out a very expensive holiday for all inclusive customers, but would have been very boring otherwise. Even though we're were all inclusive, we didn't abuse this, and tbh chose to eat fairly little and drank quite modestly. On our last full day, I think we only had 3 drinks in the hotel. On our day of departure we had to leave our room at 12 noon, even though we weren't getting collected until 4pm. As soon as we checked out our wrist bands were snipped off, and the lady explained everything had finished. She was very rude with us, and a German family behind us sarcastically commented on 'nothing like customer service!! " We had to pay for our lunch, softdrinks and I even had to pay 1.20 euros at reception for a small pocket sized bottle of water. We hadn't arrived on our first day until late in the evening, so had already missed out on the day 1 all inclusive. It's not just that - it's the general attitude of them making money. The Hotel strikes me as making money money money with not a genuine interest in customer satisfaction. A pleasant stay, but I don't think I would return. And definitely don't consider all inclusive, we ended up massively out of pocket to find alternative entertainment.

Visit to Riosol.

Arrived at Riosol on 21/4. Arrived at 12.30pm and advised checkin was 2pm but was told could go and have food and drinks as all inclusive. Booked a sea view room and wasn’t disappointed...

View right over the beach and resort. Food at breakfast and evening was lovely although lunch was the same everyday with very little variety. Drinks were great.
Only downsides were no lilos or rubber rings in pool or any balls at all and very little entertainment.
Staff were always friendly and helpful.
Would return but maybe self catering

Great views

Review by McDougall97 Scotland, United Kingdom

We visited Riosol in April 2022 as a treat for a 50th. The reviews on booking in 2021 were good and pictures looked lovely. Entrance and reception were lovely, modern, clean and well maintained...

Receptionist nice. We were in a premium room number 2015 which unfortunately was opposite side of reception and entrance. First the negatives. This room was a daily trek in and out. It was around 100 steps to pool and probably same to reception and doing that several times a day! If you book a premium room ask for one beside reception (if possible). Our room had sea view but also construction view as a supermarket was getting built (Azul). We also had an elderly couple who seemed to be residents and anytime we played music at say 5pm/6pm whilst getting washed etc the lady would look round in disguist though tbf never said anything. She also sun bathes topless (I can't unsee 80 year old breasts). The bathroom window was not frosted and had no blind so you could see out (to cranes) and see in from outside though it was high window. We had a teenager so wedged a towel up for cover. The WiFi didn't work right away (probably so far away) and tele had no service though they fixed next day when I phoned second time. There were some ants in room and 1 on bedroom wall but with cleaners there daily they were dealt with. There was no tea towel so I don't know what you were expected to dry dishes with though it was odd plate for us as we ate out. The sofa bed in livingroom would have no way slept 2 as it was single so this room is for 3 and I think they say 4 minimum (1 bedroom premium). Ceiling fan in bedroom very noisy. Air con unit in here would be better. Pool area not enough space for amount of guests and loads of beds left with towels on. Hotel should take these away after say 2 hours. Other rooms massively overlooked because of layout of hotel. If you stand at side of hotel or use fancy lifts you see into most balconies and walking down to beach through hotel cuts past alot of balconies. Though you could hide under parasol! Positives...clean hotel, daily maid service, great views, modern room, loads of towels, massive balcony with sun beds and parasol so if your not bothered swimming you could stay on your own balcony. Whilst our room was out the way at least we only had upstairs room overlooking our balcony and not full hotel guests! Close to europa. Good base for other shops if your okay paying taxis or fit to walk down side of mountain! We used this mainly as base so only had few cocktails and pizza and chips. They were nice. Served there purpose. Other kids seemed to enjoy and the kids entertainment looked fun. Kids area where I guess she took them along with tennis court, pool tables etc. Shop was shut indefinitely which was a pain. Overall it was okay though we were self catering. The Islands of stars is a rip off at €15 each. You get 1 drink and some melon then later on 1 bowl of bombay mix. Good if you want peace but I found it too quiet and boring! Would I recommend this hotel? Yeah if you get a good deal. Its clean and premium room good apart from small problems as above

Poor service

Hi , just visited the place . One week from 15th of April. We arrived around 23 pm to be told that we are half board...

We said that is all inclusive , then staff corrected the error. We have not received any packed food or especially water ( we only found out on the coach that water from the tap is not drinkable) so we ended up spending money on our all inclusive package by buying the water. Staff in the bar very unfriendly and slow. And as per some other people comments all drinks / cocktails are from dispensers. We spent money on late checkout to be also told that from 12 on that day we can't use all inclusive option. So our holiday was not fully 7 days all inclusive. The bed - spare bed was so uncomfortable. The only positive was the location and amazing views. But I will never return to this hotel.

Poor service and food

We stayed at the Rio Sol for 10 nights. Room is very basic, 2 single beds in bedroom but kept clean. Pool area is nice but not enough beds for everyone, if you wanted a bed you had to be there for 8:30am...

Life guard very grump and not helpful- we reported that 7 beds had towels on and no one was using them for nearly 2 hours whilst we sat in the bar area waiting for a bed. He said he couldn’t do anything.

The food is very poor- we were half board. Always looking for clean plates, cups, cutlery when trying to get your food. So busy nothing was ready and not checked by staff. Birds are in the restaurant area flying around and getting food from floor. This happens daily!

We tried to get served in the bar area and waited 30 Minutes and still no service so we left. We used to use the reception for drinks as they have a little area where they sell drinks but the queues are so big it would take too long to wait.

The hotel don’t seem to care about the complaints as they are so busy they don’t care if you come back!
