I wrote this review yesterday and to be fair to management they called this evening to check in with me. As below - staff are excellent. Very helpful and very attentive...
So I’m now slightly editing my review but the general gist is the same. The hotel is good, it’s lovely actually but it’s not a quality 5 star in my opinion and really it’s the buffet & dining area that lets it down.
The hotel is great for families. Lots for kids to do and staff are very friendly. Pools are great. There are lots of them and the kids dragon pool is fantastic. My two love it.
This isn’t a real 5 star hotel though. Well not in my opinion anyway.
Room is very spacious. We had a suite so a separate room for the kids which was great. Huge balcony too with beautiful view. Cleaned each day.
All inclusive is very handy and good value, especially for the drinks. I can’t agree with the reviews about the excellent quality food though. Yes the buffet has a wide variety of food but I wouldn’t say its good quality and lots of dishes lack flavour/seasoning. We see lots of food going to waste. We find a lot just isn’t very nice. The meats aren’t good - Sausages. Bacon. Steak etc. And the same choices most days so the buffet gets very boring after a few days. Lunch and dinner are very similar. We have eaten out a bit. Also it’s like a cattle farm too. I’m Sorry to say this but it is. It’s mayhem at times and the tables are basic canteen type style. Not luxurious and not 5 star.
We ate lunch in the snack bar for the last two days. Burgers were very good and lovely waiter.
Drinks are great. Staff are lovely. Place is clean. Covid friendly. Lots to do. Kids love it. Kids disco great fun for kids. But again I think the disco room lacks quality & luxury. It has a butlins type style seating area. It could be so much better.
Don’t get me wrong, this place is fantastic for families. Especially for kids under 10. We have had a lovely holiday and our boys loved the swimming. It’s just not 5 star in my opinion. And it’s lacking a touch of class and luxury. It’s more 3+ maybe 4 star I think.
Fantastic hotel, great variety of things to do and plenty of room for everybody to enjoy their holiday. We stayed for 2 weeks and can't fault anything. Room was very clean and spacious, our ocean view was great to wake up too.
Wide variety of food every day, was an option to eat in another restaurant but we were more than happy with the buffet style every day...
Staff were very friendly and service was great.
There is lots of different pools and our toddler enjoyed swimming in the shallow pools, which gave us a chance to relax whilst being able to keep close by on the sum lounger.
Definitely would recommend and will be coming back.
Thanks for a great holiday
Stayed 7 night at the Gran Castillo Tagoro November 2021. Hotel is lovely and clean . Stayed in a Family room which was an amazing large room...
Great bathroom. My husband snores and I moved my bed into the lounge and closed the doors on him. Only thing they could improve would be more comfortable mattress, deeper and some English tv channels other than the news. May be film channels. We only used the adult pool which was always kept clean. Pool was too cold for me but the large spa pool was lovely and warm. Food was ok, breakfast was nice with egg station fried eggs cooked to order. Lunch and evening meals seemed to be the same, with me only eating chicken I did find food boring. The deserts are amazing, best I have had, ate too many. We like to go out in the evening to eat. Bars etc short walk along the coast to the marina. I found the hotel good value for money, clean with very pleasant staff. It is a family resort so be prepared for a lot of children, Don't let that put you off as there are adult only areas. Hope to go back next year.
We spent a week here with our 2year old. We had read mixed reviews so went in with low expectations.
We really enjoyed our time here...
The staff were super helpful, it was so baby friendly and exceptionally clean.
The food was good, we left one night and went to the marina to break it up but overall can’t complain about the food. We are in the main buffet 4nights, the Italian restaurant 2 nights and left the complex another. There’s a huge selection for both adults and kids.
The bar staff at the snack bar were incredible, so friendly and happy to help in anyway they could, especially Sergio. They have a kids club and baby room, which are open for 2hrs in the am and 2hrs in the afternoon all the staff again were great.
The room was very spacious and again clean. We got upgraded on arrival which meant we had a joining room. It had a bedroom, living room and balcony and adjoining room with another bedroom, bathroom, living room abs balcony. It was called a superior family room. This worked out well with a toddler as if we just had one rooms it might a be a bit tricky sitting on the balcony while she slept. As it was cold in the evenings. The room was cleaned every day and a fresh bottle of water was left.
At the pool, We paid €50 for 4 days for the Bali beds at beside the pool, just to have that bit of extra space with a toddler and it was really handy. Arrived every morning to fresh towels and made up bed. Alternatively you can get towels and loungers at the pool. There is a bit of a scramble to get good beds, most are gone by 9:30. They do aqua aerobics everyday at the pool at 12 which is great fun, both kids and adults love it.
There’s also an adult only pool, which is nice to go to for a little escape The entertainment in the evening is great for kids.
In terms of covid, it’s safe and they insist that masks be worn when inside public areas which is food do see.
There is a beautiful promenade at the back of the resort and you can walk to the marina which is about 25mins walk, lots of bars and restaurants. Then playa Blanca is about another 20mins walk with even more bars and restaurants. We walked one night and got a taxi back which was 10mins.
On our last day we had a late night flight. For an extra €50 we could stay in our room until we left which was 4pm which was amazing with a toddler. They were very accommodating.
Weather was a nice. It was cold in the evenings and overcast from about 4pm onwards. But from around 10-2 we’d get a nice blast of sun.
Overall, if you’re looking for a convenient place to go with kids that’s clean and in a good location, we’d would really recommend.
Good, but not 5*
We’ve just come back from a week at Gran Castillo and it was a bit of a mixed bag. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with this hotel at all, and some elements are excellent, but overall and in my opinion, this is not a 5* hotel when compared to our experiences at other 5* hotels we’ve stayed at around the world. For me it’s a 3.5/4* at best, and there’s nothing wrong with that, but hotel classifications need to be accurate to manage people’s expectations...
So, let’s start with the good bits -
the staff - without exception, the staff are wonderful. Genuine, friendly and helpful at all times. Hats off to them, they really are a credit to the hotel.
Cleanliness - the hotel and grounds are spotless and well maintained.
Covid safe - plenty of sanitiser stations and everyone wore masks.
Kids clubs - we used the baby club and mini club which both of our children thoroughly enjoyed.
Buffet restaurant - good, quality food
Rooms are very spacious and the beds were very comfortable
Not so 5* bits -
Room quality - we stayed in a senior suite which is (according to the hotel website), their best room. As I said before, the rooms are huge - the suite had a large bedroom, separate dressing room and lounge with a king size sofa bed BUT the room just didn’t feel luxurious. We’d specifically paid extra to have some special extras and you just don’t get it.
Restaurant choice - like I said, the buffet restaurant serves good food, including some epic stone baked pizzas and a specific pasta station in the evening. The only other restaurant option in the hotel is an Italian restaurant, which serves pizza and pasta...which you can get in the buffet restaurant. Why not make the al a carte restaurant something totally different, so it offers some variation instead of the same food in a different setting? Also, aside from one evening when the buffet restaurant did a Chinese food evening (which was delicious), it was the same menu each night. It got a bit monotonous and we ate out 2 nights.
All in all, we had a nice holiday. I just don't think what we paid reflected what we expected and what we got. I wouldn't go back for this reason, but there are lots of positives about Gran Tagoro.
