At last..finally returned to our favorite hotel in Playa Blanca. Formerly,Hesperia Playa Dorada,it is still the best place to stay in Playa Blanca. The check in was very efficient and the glass of champagne was a very nice touch from the staff...
Our room on the third floor was very nice and cleaned daily. Breakfast every morning was a delight and a very warm greeting from Reyae every morning to cheer us up. One minor problem was solved quickly and efficiently by Arnaud at reception. He is a very efficient staff member. We only opted for the half board option and dinner every evening was delightful. The chefs are fantastic and can whip up a quick delicious meal in no time. We really enjoyed our 10 day stay at our favourite location in Playa Blanca. Intend to return again next year at the earliest opportunity
We arrived and it was on first impressions great - nice rooms, well stocked mini bar, friendly staff and the usual just about ok buffet.
But it didn’t take long to realise the place was hugely understaffed with queues for everything. After one night they emptied the mini bar and removed the tea and coffee facilities as the maid realised we were all inclusive which is roughly translated into second class citizen in the hotel.
His place is tired, old, understaffed and not worth the money...
I’m not one for moaning but here goes! Booked here for our first family holiday in over two years! As you can imagine we had high hopes especially having paid a serious amount of money for what we believed was a 5 star all inclusive! Well it is certainly not that! The hotel grounds, pools and rooms are stunning and in an amazing location. The kids pool is bizarrely deep which was weird but anyway the hotel is lovely to look at. The restaurants are also beautifully decorated...
But then there is the service and the food. Personally this is the worst all inclusive I have ever stayed in in terms of food. There are supposedly 5 restaurants. 2 are actually buffets, 1 is only open in the day and 2 are only open twice a week the Asian and the Bluewater Grill. Never got booked in to the Bluewater grill as it was full for the week but the Asian was dire anyway so we were not missing much! The staff are really nice but so few of them they are constantly apologising which they don’t deserve. I understand Covid staffing issues but this went beyond that. If I wanted a cheap buffet only hotel I would have booked one and the price would have been commensurate. I certainly didn’t get what I paid for here. I tried to complain several times but was never ever contacted back by Juliette the manager of guest services after 3 attempts I eventually gave up. The only decent food is the daytime Bluewater Grill which does burgers and pizzas etc but be warned you can wait over an hour for food. You cannot get a coffee in the morning for love not money, they only provide coffee pod machines in the room for ‘preferred guests’ I read loads of reviews of this hotel before booking I really don’t know what these people were talking about. You’ll pay a lot for this hotel and be mortally disappointed! My advice book self catering and eat out you’ll be much happier!
Having seen a mix of great and bad reviews prior to booking, it was our experience that the hotel rates somewhere in the middle until the poor service issues are resolved.
Arrival & Room:
On arrival to the hotel, it looks lovely, and it is in a great area. We visited the Marina and beach which are both short walks. Reception service from Sonia was pleasant upon check-in and a glass of bubbly was a nice touch too...
Our preferred club room was on the third floor with a balcony facing the sea which was lovely. The room was modern with good facilities. Unfortunately, we found ants in the room and don’t think the rooms/sheets were cleaned well as both arrived home with bites on our legs/arms. Water in mini bar needed prompting to be re-stocked and toiletries (were excellent) weren’t replenished once throughout the week despite being in use/needing it. We decided to not use the air con due to other guests we spoke to getting sick from it. Parts of hotel still not open/finished and taped up sections of grounds too. Appears to have been opened before finishing/rushed the refurbishment works.
General & Checkout:
We arrived on an evening flight. While if you arrive early you are allowed to use the facilities and eat, if you arrive late and therefore leave late, you are not afforded the same luxury. If you have an evening flight to leave you are expected to pay for any food and drink and use of facilities after 12pm. There is no customary shower room for guests leaving past 12pm either (which we have experienced in the most basic of 3 star hotels) and so you must pay an hourly charge to keep your room if you wish to freshen up before leaving. This means for an evening flight you are adding circa £100-150 extra onto your already expensive holiday. Not 5-star service worthy. On checking out, we asked our bags to be put in a luggage room due to not leaving for the airport till late afternoon. We were told no problem and when arrived back at reception 4 hours later they were still lying by reception. My wife walked up and took them away and not one member of staff noticed. Essentially our bags were left out to be stolen and while the receptionist apologised and offered some complimentary drinks, they never arrived in the hour we were sitting at reception waiting on our transfer. This sums up the service in general for the week. Offer the bare minimal service but don’t have the staff to follow through with it.
We paid for “preferred club” unlimited luxury status but this still doesn’t include everything. Lots of extra’s such as use of indoor pool/spa and Balinese beds. Plain drinks included but raspberry versions 2 euros extra etc. Doesn’t make much sense. The adult only preferred club bar and pool is closed for refurbishment so only one section available. There is not enough sun beds here for the amount of rooms sold as preferred club so if you are not quick down they just tell you sorry it’s full. Not great to pay all that extra money and not get use of the facilities. Luckily, we only experienced this on our last day. There is supposed to be a concierge/butler service in this area also for drinks but due to lack of staff it doesn’t happen. One staff member was seen doing this on two mornings of our trip but didn’t speak English so only went up to foreign speaking guests. We managed to eventually flag him down so received the service once out of 7 days. A bottle of sparkling wine is given on arrival in room which is nice touch. A separate breakfast area to avoid the mad main buffet rush was also appreciated.
Advertised as 9 swimming pools, however indoor pool costs extra to use and one is closed. 5 of the 7 open are small kids pools so only two adult pools one in normal section and one in preferred club. The preferred club area is hinted as being adults only, but it isn’t and could really do with being so while the official adult pool is closed. Enjoying a drink at the swim bar and being hit by balls isn’t enjoyable and one other guest had a random child jump on him as he was relaxing in the pool. The swim up bar in the preferred club area is a nice touch though and enjoying sunset drinks in the infinity section is lovely and where we spent a lot of time.
A real mixed bag here. Breakfast was great. The main evening buffet we found to be lacklustre and of not great quality. The opposite of the buffet lunch which was always good. The Barefoot Grill was excellent for pizza and burgers during the day and could deliver to your sunbed in preferred club (sometimes a long wait though). Again, service issues here as one day we went and despite there only being 3 other tables were told the wait for two pizzas would be minimum 1 hour. Not great really. The Sabar restaurant was excellent and enjoyed fresh steaks and seafood paella on the nights we ate. The Bluewater Grill was the worst food experience of the week. Again, staffing issues seemed to cause this. Despite not many tables being full we were rushed through our meal, with all 3 courses being served within 20 mins. It had obviously been made ahead of time and the main courses came out luke warm, rubbery and with no flavour. Very poor. The Himitsu was the opposite and was one of the best meals of the week which I would recommend highly. It is however very hard to book into the restaurants despite them being offered as “being available all week”.
Bar/waiter Service is very poor and probably not even 3 star worthy. From speaking to staff, they are working 16 hour days and are at about half capacity. This means long wait for drinks (30-45mins) and sometimes no drinks at all. On our first night at the buffet, after 45mins I had to go find someone to ask for water. More staff were introduced as the week went in, but they did not have sufficient training, and many didn’t understand English (a bit of an issue when 90% of guests are British). On several occasions they didn’t understand the request or drink so just walked off and didn’t return or said “sorry there is none” despite being able to see the bottle behind the bar in clear view. Despite the issue with staff, there are some who deserve a special mention as they were excellent and worked tirelessly despite the situation as well as providing good chat and smiles:
On reflection, we had a great holiday and met some wonderful guests we enjoyed spending time with. The weather was fantastic and the location was spot on. However, the hotel has some serious service issues needing ironed out and until this is done I don’t think it should be rated 5 star (which I have fed back to TUI) as the 5 star prices they charge are on kin with other brands (Baha Principe, Sandals etc) but they struggle to offer a 3 star service at present. I would struggle to recommend Dreams to others and probably wouldn’t book with them in future based on the experience. For Lanzarote they are plenty of 4 star hotels in a similar location which will offer better value for service.
We’re sitting in the reception waiting for pick up to the airport. I’ve just read the previous review by Callum. Spot on there...
Actually glad I did read it as the air con has given us both sore throats etc. Staffing issues seem to be the problem. This place would be great with adequate and well trained staff. We stayed half board and opted for breakfast and lunch as we like to go out in the evenings and I would advise to do this. Really is a great location, the food is ok and the staff do their best. Hopefully next year they’ll sort out the issues and if the reviews reflect that we’d come back. One further thing- at 8am each morning I went to the preferred adult pool and put towels on our beds before going for breakfast. Wasn’t an issue and everyone did so. I suggest you do so too.
