Amazing hotel in lovely area

Review by ericgrant1971 Leeds, United Kingdom

Absolutely stunning hotel. We are 25+ times visitors to Melia resorts (usually visit Caribbean) and this surely doesn't let the brand down.

It's extremely modern, clean and has wonderful friendly staff...

Can't recall all the names but Alyssia (Manager) is very nice and approachable. Always has a smile and time to talk to her guests.

We booked a week in the Beach House Master Suite (201) which is the biggest suite on site and has a huge outdoor space plus jacuzzi. Yes it's expensive to book this suite but it's well worth it. Stunning.

My only criticisms would be the evening menu options; get rid of a-la carte and have a buffet like breakfast? It doesn't work. Huge portions so lots of wastage plus of course, there's not really much choice. The food is great - I'm just suggesting reverting to a buffet as I hate seeing good food going to waste. It's a personal thing - not a dig at the hotel.

We did eat out most evenings (even though we were half board) because of this so spent over €300 on top of the €3k holiday cost. I'd have much preferred a smaller buffet style setup.

Everything was perfect, checkin was fast and you never really wait long for the lift (there's x2 to serve 4 floors).

All in we really enjoyed our stay, we'd definitely recommend it and will definitely return again.

Once again, huge thanks to the GM (Alyssia) for being a star.

Wonderful Hotel and Staff

Review by patmE7102PD

It was brilliant to be back at the Cala Blanca even with current restrictions After 40+ visits it is the magnificent location of the hotel and the quality of the staff that always makes us want to return.

First impressions in a hotel are always important and therefore reception staff must be welcoming and obliging. We found Orla and Ismael went well beyond the call of duty particularly with our room change and Covid travel documentation...

You really could not have asked for more.

Equally our experience with Alexia and Leti of Customer Experience illustrated a willingness to satisfy guests’ requests and make their stay as comfortable as possible.

The hotel has at last tried to address the longstanding criticism of a lack of sun beds by demolishing the indoor swimming pool, which was not particularly well-used, and creating a second outdoor pool with additional beds. It works particularly well helping sun-worshippers solve the problem created by the shadow of the building.

We were pleasantly surprised that the breakfast buffet had survived Covid regulations and it was as good as ever in terms of choice available. It still had those quirky Cala Blanca moments like continually running out of cereal spoons or signage on milk that only staff could understand, things that really appeal to us.

Soon after arriving we were greeted by other guests we have met over the years. They all said the same thing about the a la carte evening meal which we were led to believe had replaced the buffet due to Covid restrictions. One of the descriptions was unrepeatable other than to say it was not very complimentary. Unfortunately we were already signed up for half board and after all surely it could not be as bad as they said. I will let my husband describe our experience.

Our first selections were a pork option for my wife and I chose hake. The hake did not mention being accompanied by anything other than vegetables so I asked if it was to be served with rice, potatoes or pasta. The answer I got was “Yes.” In the event what arrived was hake with a spoonful of sauce on a bed of fried onions. Hake seemed to be a Chef favourite as a few days later I selected it again this time it appeared with two cherry tomatoes and a small green pepper. Meanwhile my wife’s pork fillet was such that I had to cut it up on her behalf as it was so tough. As the days went by we watched plates arriving at dinner tables and then go back on the return journey. An Entrecote steak had to make the journey three times before the diners deemed it edible. In some cases dishes never made the table before being rejected. One evening we were aware of a bit of a commotion after a guest flew into a rage when the fish and chips she ordered (the menu wording) turned out to be octopus and chips and it was not the calamari type. Another evening hopes were high, there on the menu was “bakeley potato” - could this be a breakthrough. Bakeley potato materialised as chips. The soup was pleasant enough if a bit bland. On the last evening it appeared someone must have slipped up as it actually turned up hot!

The staff response to the problem seemed to be that you could choose as many options as you liked. The thought of more of this food turning up on the table was to say the least worrying. It very soon became clear that the chance of a balanced diet with regular potato of the non-fried variety, rice or pasta was not going to be possible. For a hotel with a 4 star rating and such a good reputation for food as the Cala Blanca to offer such a badly thought out selection of food involving some poor cuts of meat was really not acceptable. The menu made things worse sometimes by not giving enough information or on occasions a misleading description. The consequences are that regular guests like us may consider going bed and breakfast in future and unfortunately some of those visiting for the first time indicated that they would not be returning due to the food in the evening. This was despite the fact every other aspect of their stay at the hotel, similar to ourselves, was more than satisfactory. One couple went as far as asking if they could eat in another Melia hotel only to return saying it was even worse.

To close on a positive note you have to again revert back to the staff. Tony one of the bar staff showed himself as a really hard worker and In Sana who served in the restaurant they have a young lady who will go far in life Both of these staff were ably supervised by Jesus a new Head of Bar and Restaurant who had a real enthusiasm for the work even appearing when he was meant to be off-duty. If you are lucky enough to be based on the 4th Floor you will be served by the housemaids from heaven. Julia and Encarnita you are just the very best.

For our first visit next year we like others we spoke to are praying for the return of the evening buffet - this probably includes the staff who were left to deal with the complaints.

Improvements required

Review by Martin U Aarhus, Denmark

Lovely hotel on the beach with extremely competent staff. Small improvements required. Buffet evening has been replaced by an a la carte menu and it can be difficult to see the dishes on the menu when not illustrated with a picture / photo...

My wife and I prefer the evening buffet. Unfortunately, there is noise and noisy teenage music from speakers in living areas, despite the fact that the guests are seniors. We prefer quiet relaxing lounge music on our vacation. Incomprehensible that the staff can not read the atmosphere and the needs of the guests when planning with music.
