Lovely 4.5* resort

We first visited Coco Bodu Hithi in March 2020 for a few days when we were transferred at short notice from a sister resort when the pandemic was kicking off. The little taste we had then made us very much want to return for a full visit which we are currently in the middle of.

The island is just as beautiful as I remember and the house reef is lovely with lots of soft and hard corals which have really come on in growth since we were here last. One thing I love about the island is that as this is not a new resort the trees and plants are all well established and wonderful...

The age of the resort means that it may be a little rough around the edges in places and not as perfect or modern as some others but I’d choose it over a newer resort every time simply for the flora and fauna on land and in the sea.

The snorkelling is lovely (best house reef I’ve snorkelled on so far in the maldives and I’ve spent the morning delighting over finding multiple juvenile sweetlips on the reef outside our room!) and while we’ve only managed one dive since arriving due to the weather (a chance you take in May and in no way detracts from the loveliness of the island) we are hoping there will be more before we leave.

The guys at the dive centre (Nasif and Harsha) are brilliant, really knowledgeable and friendly and I can’t wait to go on another dive with them.

We went on a snorkel on the house reef with Starr the resident marine biologist which was really interesting especially finding out about the different types of corals.

We decided to stay in an Island villa rather than a water villa as we wanted to be able to walk out on to the beach and stand in the water and stays at other water villas at other resorts have shown me we just don’t do that if in a water villa. That said I’d probably have chosen the Island Villa anyway given the size and privacy which is greater than all the water villa options even the residence water villas which would be my second choice.

Island Villas 326 to 333 are on the best bit of sandy beach and while the other side of the island has been quite blustery it’s been really sheltered over on the side we’re staying on, almost like a different island!

I’m sure when we were here in 2020 there was an online system you could access to book restaurants, spa etc. (I may be confusing this with another resort!) but this time everyone gets an island host who you contact for assistance with anything. Kencho our host has been mentioned on a number of other trip advisor reviews and I can confirm the praise is all true as Kencho has been very approachable, friendly and helpful.

The restaurants are all very good quality including the buffet. I usually don’t like AI as I don’t really drink and I’m vegetarian so find usually I don’t have much choice however we’re on an AI premium package (an older one as it’s changed recently and includes less) which means we can dine in all the restaurants and includes both bars.

The food quality in the restaurants is excellent and my partner is enjoying the food and choice a lot (he has a steak cooked to perfection the other evening) however for me despite usually not liking buffet restaurants I’m preferring the buffet as the other restaurants are not great for vegetarians. One of the restaurants doesn’t even have a vegetarian choice at all (other than an onion soup starter!) and while they made me something I don’t like being asked what I’d like made as I’m not a chef and don’t know what they’ve got in their kitchen stores.

I’ve found myself comparing the a la carte restaurants to those at Reethi Beach and Reethi Faru which are 4* resorts whereas Bodu Hithi is supposed to be 5* and I have to say I preferred the offerings at the Reethi’s more though if I ate meat and fish it may be different.

My overall conclusions for Coco Bodu Hithi are that the island is beautiful, the house reef is lovely and healthy, the rooms are great being spacious and kept spotless and the people here are very good at their jobs. This is an excellent 4.5* resort but it’s not quite a 5* resort (it was described by our travel agent Angelfish as an entry level 5* resort). There’s nothing I can 100% say is this reason for this conclusion, it’s lots of small things that are not by themselves bad or an issue. I’d come back if the price was right but for the higher price asked I’d likely stay elsewhere either paying more for a true 5* or less for another very good 4.5* resort.

That you Coco Bodu Hithi for a lovely stay.

Can’t wait to go back

Beautiful beautiful location. This is a paradise. Great hospitality, especially from Reema and team. Mariam’s photography team is courteous and superbly talented. Just that they should have flexible food timings. When you are paying this much for an all inclusive package, you don’t want to rush (and you have to walk like a lot to go from one place to the other) and expect to eat at any hour of the day. If this is in place, no one can ever beat them. Other than that, it was like a dream. Coco residence is highly recommended from our end.

10 night honeymoon

Review by HJPointon Greater Manchester, United Kingdom

After our flight from the UK. We were greeted by the resorts rep and took a fast fun boat trip provided by the resort from velana international airport to the resort. We were offered water to drink on the boat and the staff were very friendly...

Upon reaching the island we were greeted by the friendly waves and smiles of some of the Coco Bodhu Hithi team before being escorted to the reception for check in, which was seamless whilst we enjoyed some fruit juice. We were then escorted to our first villa as we chose to stay in an island villa for the first 5 days and a water villa for the 2nd 5 days. The island villa was a really nice size and had easy access to a lovely beach and also had a very private pool / outside shower area to the the other side. I personally preferred this to the water villa but due to having an in house gecko in the island villa, my wife preferred the water villa that was almost as big but further from the jungle and had direct access to the sea where you could spot small sharks, turtles, manta-ray and many other fish of different colours. We had the all inclusive package that included all our main meals, some at the a la carte restaurants, all were tasty and there was a good choice, there was also a decent list of drinks to choose from. All the staff we encountered were lovely however special thanks must go to Hamdhan at Air Restaurant, Venkat & Faytash at Latitude & Aneef & stars restaurant who all went the extra mile and really made our honeymoon extra special. We tried the spa, the diving centre and some water sports, we enjoyed all of these and there was more than enough to do over our 10 night stay. Unfortunately I only tried diving late into the trip, this I especially enjoyed and would have gone multiple times had I tried it earlier in the trip and was an experience I will never forget. The spa we felt was a little overpriced and this was the reason we didn’t attend more frequently. Feedback for the resort; “A few things that I think the resort could do better.”

  1. On the all inclusive package, it’s very annoying to have to keep signing for everything you eat and drink. I couldn’t understand why this was necessary, other than to make us think we would be bonkers to come here any other way than all inclusive as some the bills very quickly rack up. With some prices less justified than others. There is absolute No chance I would pay the price they put on the bill for the buffet if it wasn’t included.
  2. The bathrooms smell slightly, seems like of a drainage issue. Can’t fault the room cleaners however who do a good job. As you are effectively living in the jungle you do let a lot go that you wouldn’t at other resorts, little things like stained lampshades and headboards, that should have been replaced, missing tiles in the pools, sometimes too many leaves in the pools etc. Only little wines really but simple changes that could easily improve the experience and stop customers looking for other faults. Overall a lovely honeymoon experience.
