Belle Mare

The Residence Mauritius Coastal Road Belle Mare Mauritius Although only open for 16 years The Residence Mauritius is already considered as one of the jewels of the international hotel scene. Its mile long beach of immaculate white sand fringed by tropical gardens its refined and deliciously nostalgic decor inspired by turn of the century plantation houses. Its butler service surpassing the colonial palaces of yesteryear its exotic and delicate cuisine are only some of the ingredients which have contributed to the hotel success.

Due to the surrounding area and the number of steps around the hotel, it may not be suitable for those with mobility difficulties.

Chilled out luxury break with those little extra touches!

This was our second visit to this beautiful hotel and we weren't disappointed! We stayed for 9 nights and enjoyed every moment of it. The location is wonderful and the hotel has a very peaceful atmosphere. The food was excellent as always with the menu constantly changing...

A highlight for us was that our anniversary was on Easter Sunday and they made this extra special with gifts and treats on arrival as well as on our anniversary itself. All staff were great but just want to especially thank the staff at the Plantation as they prepared a very special table for us on the night and surprised us with a cake too! Nothing was too much trouble for our butler, Sailen, who was always smiling and ready to help. We indulged in the Spa on the day we arrived and enjoyed a superb massage which helped us unwind too. The room was beautiful and extremely comfortable. Well done once again and thank you!

Very accommodative staff in a beautiful setting

Review by Peter82 London

Very accommodative staff and beautiful setting and location. What made the visit for me was the staff. My wife is gluten free and sometimes finds it hard to eat well and hassle free on holiday...

The Residence put us at ease with lovely menus each night, a truly amazing chef and a warm welcome. Very nice staff all round.

The rooms were large, not overly lavish but very comfortable. The various pools and beaches make for a very restful and romantic stay. We intend to return .

Unfortunately ‘reminiscent of a bygone age’.

Review by 505kennyl Chiswick, United Kingdom

In the website they describe themselves as ‘ reminiscent of a bygone age.’ Unfortunately this appears to be the truth. We did not stay, but ‘tried’ in vain to visit two days ago. I’ll explain; We are staying along the beach at the friendly and contemporary Lux. While researching a vacation on Mauritius’ La Residence was on our shortlist...

We did not choose it (fortunately) but thought we should of course check it out whilst there, for a possible future vacation.

We decided to visit by simply wandering along the beach with a view to introducing ourselves. And having a light lunch at their oceanfront restaurant ‘The Plantation’. We approached the resort from the thin strip of beach and coarse grass path between it and the ocean. As my wife and young son climbed up the dozen or so steps simply up to the main walkway an old style security guard stood heftily directly in her path and told her to ‘leave the property’. “GET OFF THE STEPS” Despite her explanation of good intentions he stood in her way and told her again that he would not allow her to pass. I was further ahead and had already climbed a set of steps to the property pathway. He continued to instruct my wife to ‘get off the property’, I had not fully realized what was going on till he started approaching me aggressively, telling me to ‘get off the property’. I tried explaining to him that we were on our way to The Plantation which he ignored, quickly ushering in another security guard, radio out calling for assistance, who told me forcibly to get off the paved path of the resort, and back down onto the coarse grass. My wife and son were visibly upset, one second wandering along a beach in paradise and the next being treated like this. My son was almost in tears seeing me being accosted. Obviously we had to abandon our plan, return to the beach and were more appreciative of our own friendly and welcoming resort where ironically La Residence guests frequently visit and are beautifully welcomed by expertly trained staff. We had decided to visit The Plantation partly because it describes itself as ‘one of the favourite dining destinations on the island’. Oh the irony. This is a resort that not only lost an opportunity to show off their resort, but have ensured that we’ll be relaying this story for years and advising to avoid this pompous, out of touch, disrespectful and old fashioned place altogether.

To the resort: what I expected was “Good afternoon, welcome to La Residence’ how can I help introduce you to our lovely hotel”. Not difficult eh… but how much does such a mistake cost you every day?

Understated luxury and service

Review by Alastair D London, United Kingdom

An elegant resort right on the beach lagoon. It is designed to look like a Plantation property with the main service area in the centre. This includes the main dining room, swimming pools and reception...

The rooms are in several blocks to each side of the centre. It is low rise to a maximum of three levels. The rooms are large, bright and modern, presented very nicely with a large bathroom that includes a separate bath and shower. There are numerous places to relax, three distinct areas of beach, each with a member of staff to sort out your sun-bed and provide water and other sustenance. There is plenty of room for everyone, beds on the beach, at the pool or in the palm trees. This was all great but the icing on the cake was the food. We were half board, which I would suggest is the way forward. Rooben and his team in the main dining room presented a la carte offerings each evening. There is a sense of belonging when you are greeted by name. At the other end of the resort and on the beach is the Plantation restaurant. Radhoa and his team allowed us to sit on the veranda watching the world go by. There is an additional charge to eat here but well worth it. We had two dinners and two lunches, all great but the standout was the lobster night on the Sunday evening. It isn’t by accident that both restaurants are superb, both managers are hands on and always there. Shout out to Sabrina and Sailen who looked out for us. Well done.

Message to the Revenue Manager Thank you so much for your help in making my family and myself rediscover The Residence after a long time! We were delighted to see that the hotel still has the same charm as our first time! You have maintained the high level of quality and service! The wonderful room, gardens , my all-time favorite restaurant The Plantation😊 My little one really loved the Kid’s club as much as my elder use to do 10 years ago!!! So well done to all the teams and particularly to your GM for the wonderful work!
