The best resort we’ve ever stayed at

Review by kloeo2019

We visited the resort last July and to say it was excellent would be an understatement of epic proportions! From the moment we arrived we were greeted with hospitality of the highest quality - a welcome drink, warm cloth and tour!

On being shown to our room we were more than happy - the spacious rooms are clean, comfortable and very well kept and are well equipped with snacks and drinks of which most are included in the all inclusive package! The housekeepers should be applauded for their dedication - they truly go above and beyond (even to the extent of preparing a beautiful swan towel arrangement for my parents anniversary!). We were already impressed without having even left the room yet.

We then went to the main restaurant for food where we met Yan for the first time - he was extremely helpful and showed us around explaining the layout...

This was followed by banterful talk of football with my father (the old Liverpool vs Man United rivalry). The food in the buffet was exceptional for breakfast, lunch and dinner with an array of choice which changes each day as they have a different cuisine per night - Italian night was by far my favourite! (Mostly because the chef made an exclusive and delicious carbonara for me by request of the buffet manager Alan, after I’d told him it was my favourite!!!) You could actually eat in the buffet every night without getting bored - which is very rare!

The buffet isn’t the only establishment that should be applauded - the beach bar and beachside restaurant are also exceptional (and not just because the kitchen staff are also Liverpool supporters)! Hans is the man to ask for at the Bar, he like everyone else at the resort goes above and beyond! Even though they have a large selection of cocktails on the menu, he was still prepared to make me custom cocktails (after noticing I hadn’t drank the cocktail I ordered the day before). Hans’ second to none service along with the delicious snack like dishes the restaurant offers like chicken skewers and salads makes it the perfect lunch time eatery!

The same can be said for the beachside restaurant at night where Nandish was more than happy to prepare my go to blue lagoon (blue curaçao, vodka and lemonade) which I highly recommend! You can also enjoy incredible meals at the restaurant day and night! I highly recommend the trio of delicious burgers during the day and the succulent steak dish at night (which I could’ve easily eaten every night). My favourite meal at this beachside restaurant had to be the pasta dish (that wasn’t even on the menu) specially prepared for me at lunch after we told Nandish I’d missed out on the pasta at the buffet! There really was nothing that was too much trouble, you didn’t even have to ask.

The best meal we had must have been on our final evening at the resort - we went in to the buffet as usual and we were seated but then were told that another table had been prepared for us. We were then escorted to a table that had been beautifully and thoughtfully decorated by Yan with flowers and candles! To make things even better it was Italian night and just as I went up to get food Alan the manager told me to sit down and he’d bring my food to me (at a buffet!) and he did. He brought a single dish of carbonara the chef had made specially for me and not even just because it was delicious - this was by far the best carbonara I’ve ever had!

The resort itself is absolutely beautiful - Mauritius as a country is unmatched - the mountains and greenery next to the clear turquoise waters - breathtaking! There’s so much to do at the resort itself - boat trips, canoeing, snorkelling all included in the price. Additionally two pools can be found at the resort, both with amazing views. We even ventured out of the resort one day by renting bikes (which were very reasonable) and got to see more of the country’s stunning coastline! To my knowledge there’s also a gym available for use and a running group that goes from the beach. We didn’t partake in this but my parents did get a chance to go for a run around the island as Alan the buffet manager offered to take them on his day off!

The reason I’ve written this now is because while looking at other holidays there’s nowhere I think that could beat this resort! I’m almost scared to go somewhere else in fear that it doesn’t live up to the standards of Outrigger Resort Mauritius!

Not only did we have the most amazing and relaxing holiday, we really feel like we made friends for life! There really is nowhere quite like it. We’ll definitely be back!

Review by Archiewetleg North Korea

We booked the Outrigger on New Years Eve completely missing the chimes of Big Ben. This gave us access to an all inclusive deal. First impressions were good being met and escorted to our room by Janitta who took a great deal of trouble to explain the “AI” deal and mini bar inclusions...

As our week has progressed we have noticed some things that could be addressed.

Service can be very slow some staff can appear preoccupied yet others can’t do enough. Arrun (Wednesday to Monday) at the “quiet pool” has been excellent and attentive.

Pryia our room maid has done a great job of servicing a room which appears a little tired. As mentioned in previous reviews the curtains have missing clips, and this morning Mrs Wetleg was covered in a shroud as she pulled back the curtain whilst welcoming the day, the main door is difficult to open and close (note to self: pack a wood plane next time), the security chain on the French door has obviously been repaired many times, you get a free shower as you enter or leave the room due to the dripping condensation from the unit above the door, which makes it quite hard to keep the room clean. Whilst the towel art on the bed has been very impressive. I can’t help think the room maid should turn her hand to a spot of DIY, planing down the door, fixing the LED strip behind the headboard and colour matching the low energy bulbs in the room. On a couple of occasions we have had towels with holes in which are also threadbare at the edges as was one of the pillow cases on the bed. The reason I married Mrs. Wetleg some 30 years ago was for her enduring beauty but also that mosquitos are attracted to her and not me. Despite keeping the room at a constant 18 degrees the Vape mosquito repellant appears to act as little more than a navigation beacon as they enter a holding pattern before departing via the ILS to leg 28 Left.

On the first night we thought we would test the “AI” drinks menu in the Market buffet restaurant and order some Port to go with the cheese. This we were told was not available. The next night we dined at Edge Water which was excellent and so was the cheese selection but still no Port, such a shame, by the fifth night the Drambuie and Cointreau were unavailable in the buffet restaurant. The hotel has what looks like an excellent wine list but I would be put off spending extra money on a bottle by the service and knowledge of the staff. Often our AI wine order would turn up after we had finished our appetisers.

Sitting at certain tables in the buffet restaurant can lead to free laser eye surgery as placed in the roof are laser spot projectors which send green and blue laser dots around the room. For a moment due to my PTSD I though I was about to be shot by special forces. On the positive side, my astigmatism is completely cured in my remaining eye! There are a few sparrow type birds flying around the restaurant which are not really a problem. Could I politely suggest that the management invest in a bird of prey to patrol the restaurant when closed? Failing that why not play the subtitle sounds of a hunting eagle over the speakers similar to the way in which birds are cleared from runways.

Mrs. Wetleg decided to take up the offer of the free 30 minute massage. She was allowed to combine it with my massage, as I’ve never been keen on having my body messed around with by anyone not fully certified by the National Association of Chiropractors and Mrs. Wetleg of course. I understand that two complimentary massages are not the “full monty” but she felt that some medical history should have been taken prior to starting the treatment. They were so keen to get to work on her that she wasn’t fully prepared and still had her top on. At previous spas she has been sat down and given tea and relaxing music whilst her full medical history has been taken, (not a task undertaken lightly). This is not only important but would give the spa a chance to up sell.

Are we too old? What is it with this New Age music being played in the restaurant and through the nice Bose speakers around the pool? Sadly it makes us feel like we are trapped in a New York lift or sitting in a chapel of rest. A number of hotels we have stayed in have App based programs which allow you to book restaurants and excursions. This could be extended to allow guests to have some limited control over the Muzak, it may also help to keep guests in the bar later.

I was confused by the board at the water sports boathouse which I thought was the sushi menu for the Crab Shack restaurant, it was in fact a “wanted” poster of all the things looking to attack you in the sea.

The Valentine's set meal at the Plantation Club was a bit of a disaster as we were served the "amuse bouche" three times and served the starter twice. This was handled well by the management and the bill cancelled.

Having said the above we had a really good nine nights at the hotel. The evening buffet was very nice and one section had a different theme every night. You probably have to accept the hotel rooms have seen better days and are not 5* but we had a very nice time and sitting by the quiet pool it was never busy.

Great hotel with excellent facilities and close to the beach

Review by James F London, United Kingdom

The room was a nice and large double room with a view of the pool and a balcony (on the ground floor). There was a private beach in the grounds of the hotel less than 5 minutes walk away. We also went to the spa which was very nice and relaxing...

We tried two of the restaurants for lunch and dinner and the food was nice, not amazing food but very good. Breakfast had a large choice of hot and cold food as well as drinks.

Due to the close proximity of the forest we found a couple of cockroaches in the room, but we were already told this and the fact we were on the ground floor wouldn't have helped. Unfortunately we had to leave early because of Covid-19 and some of the facilities were closing, but the staff were helpful in arranging our early departure and refund. it was shame we couldn't stay for the number of nights we booked.

We spent 3 nights. I must say that was excellent. First and foremost the location with a Zing atmosphere...

Rooms surprisingly comfortable. Dishes & desserts were divine.Activities provided is mindblowing. Relaxing spa offers a range of massages plus access with hammam and sauna is rejuvenating. I would strongly recommend Outrigger to others for family, friends and even business trip. It's a gem. One important thing that will urge you to visit again is hospitality of fully proffesional energetic and forever smiling staffs. They create magical attachment to make you feel at ease. Thumbs up.
