Beruwala, West Coast Sri Lanka

Beruwala

Beruwala is the largest and most popular holiday resort on Sri Lanka. Located 58km south of Colombo, Beruwala holidays are close enough to still explore the fascinating capital of Sri Lanka while maintaining that escapist quality the thousands of visitors to this fantastic island are looking for. The main attraction of a trip to Beruwala is the fantastic golden sandy beaches which line the sun-kissed coastline.

When to go

Temperatures in Beruwala vary only slightly throughout the year, though December to April present the best times to visit, as this time sees less rainfall than during other months. The very warmest times are April to June, with averages of around 28°C - 30°C to be expected, but even the cooler months of the year will have average temperatures that rarely fall below the mid-20s.

Top Attractions

The neighbouring town of Bentota hosts the annual Bentota Beach Festival, and this is an event we’d definitely recommend. DJs come flocking, the drinks will be flowing, and calypso dancing is what you’ll be attempting.

Back in Beruwala, heading to the habour will provide a whole host of things to get your teeth into. The bustling port is a great place to experience a bit of local life, watching the various fishing boats bearing the day’s catch. Or boarding one heading in the opposite direction, and head out for a fishing trip or make the short hop to the island lighthouse for incomparable views.

Beaches

It is almost without argument that the best thing about Beruwala is its beach. Lines of tropical palm trees and caramel trimming make this a striking coastline. Here you’ll also find a selection of water sports including parasailing, snorkelling, wind surfing and jet-skis, plus a handful of restaurants. You may even catch sight of the local turtles.

Dining

The selection of seafood fare on offer at the harbour, every bit as fresh as you would expect with so many fishing boats shuttling about the place, is something you should try at least once during your stay. And, of course, the local cuisine, including curries of all descriptions, is delicious.

Culture

As well as the active fishing harbour, there are a range of interesting buildings including the Kechimalai Mosque built on a headland site which dates from the first recorded Muslim settlement on Sri Lanka in the 11th Century.

For a taste of local life, hopping into a tuk tuk and getting yourself down to the Aluthgama Market will immerse you in a bit of Sri Lankan day-to-day. Or take advantage of Beruwala’s status as the country’s go-to place for Ayurvedic treatment, and indulge in a massage, steam bath or body scrub.

Adventure and Sports

Just a short trek from Beruwala is the famous Kosgoda Turtle Hatchery, which provides an experience that adults and kids alike will find fascinating. Nature lovers could continue by booking a trip to the Pinnewala Elephant Orphanage, the most popular excursion on the island.

For the chance to witness even more extraordinary wildlife, take a boat trip along Bentota Ganga, where the odd crocodile and mysterious birds of prey are to be found.

Getting around

Buses connect the nearby towns with Beruwala, but the easiest way of getting around and taking in the sights, especially if you’re planning to head down to the harbour or to the local market, is via the numerous tuk tuks whizzing around the place.
