Wadduwa, West Coast Sri Lanka

Wadduwa

Located on the west coast of Sri Lanka, Wadduwa has become more and more popular with holidaymakers keen to experience one of the best beaches in Sri Lanka.

The curve of pristine golden sand caressed by the crystal clear waters of the Indian Ocean keeps pulling sun seekers back to Wadduwa. For the more adventurous, the surf is ideal for experiencing water sports although most will just want to spend their holiday sitting under Wadduwa’s many palm trees just breathing in this small corner of paradise.

When to go

Sri Lanka has a typically tropical climate where temperatures and humidity remain high all year round. On the coast, a light coastal breeze makes the heat comfortable. Similarly inland, the heat is significantly reduced due to the higher altitude. Rainfall is highest in May, and through October and November.

Top Attractions

There are a number of attractions available to those visiting Wadduwa, starting with the Kalutara Temple, one of the holiest places in Sri Lanka.

Others include Richmond Castle, originally a plantation mansion in Kalutara, now open to the public for viewing. There’s also The Bevis Bawa Brief Gardens, one of the most famous attraction in Wadduwa, it’s home to many sculptures and murals designed by Bawa and other artists.

Nature lovers and spiritualists shouldn’t miss The National Zoological Gardens, home to over 3000 animals it also emphasises on education and animal welfare or The Pahiyangala Cave. It is apparently the resting place of a Chinese monk and holds significant historical and archaeological importance in Sri Lanka.

Beaches

The beaches in Wadduwa are said to be some of the most beautiful in all of Sri Lanka. The long beaches are lined with hundreds if not thousands of coconut palms, and the warm sea is so clear you can see any marine life that swims by.

Wadduwa is a live fishing village, and boats return with the catch of the day right along the shoreline. Windsurfing is popular along the coast, and there is even beach volleyball to get involved with.

Kalutara beach, though split in two, is mostly unspoilt within the coastline with golden sand to enjoy.

Wadduwa is an hour away from Colombo if you’re looking for busier beaches in a more bustling town.

Culture

It is easy to soak up the Sri Lankan culture in Wadduwa through traditional souvenirs of interesting, colourful wooden carvings and masks sold in the shops here.

Dining

The resort hotels are full of fabulous restaurants serving more food than traditional Sri Lankan food.

But, for those times you want to head out try Janirest, a seafood restaurant that caters to all right next to the beach. It may look like a basic place with plastic tables and chairs and a small menu, but you won’t be disappointed.

Entertainment

Wadduwa is a slow-paced resort with nightlife mainly restricted to hotels. They occasionally have live performances and shows, but it is primarily about relaxing and enjoying your meal and cocktails.

Adventure and Sports

Wadduwa is well-known for its Ayurveda spas and treatments and is the perfect place to relax in Sri Lanka.

Deep sea fishing and scuba diving excursions are available all over Sri Lanka to get a view of the Indian Ocean underwater.

Getting Around

As is the case throughout the rest of Sri Lanka, tuk-tuks and rickshaws are available to jump in and quickly get around the town. Wadduwa is about an hours drive from Colombo and the closest airport.
