Not luxury at all
Barcelo Riviera Maya Adults only room service food is horrible. Ordered a chicken soup and it was just hot water and noodle with vegetables no flavor what so ever. Seriously a little salt and pepper goes a long way. I get some people have diet restrictions, but they can at least put condiments on the side. French fries were pale and soggy. Ordered a Hawaiian pizza and it was disgusting very pale no sauce and raw dough. The pool area waiters don’t like to work no one comes to get your order no sense of urgency. The only restaurant worth eating at is the Japanese and Mexican. The Italian restaurant isn’t Italian food at all. The rodizio restaurant stinks something wicked. Couldn’t sit down to eat as I couldn’t get past the smell. Some staff members have an attitude problem. This has been the worst vacation I have ever been to in Mexico.

Birthday weekend - sister's 50th and my 60th
Gorgeous hotel. Food was amazing and the staff was the best I've ever experienced. The only downfall is there are no shows at this resort. We had to either walk to the other resorts or take the bus. I prefer to stay at the hotel for everything. So, we didn't do most of the shows at the other resorts, due to having to leave our resort. Otherwise, it was a nice place to stay

workers do not speak very good english and checking in was frustrating. card used to pay must be present (do not accommodate for trips being paid for by family members)

Sterile, unimaginative resort
This is our 12th visit to this large resort, first to the Riviera. We absolutely have loved the Palace until they did get a little lax with rules; letting guests from other resorts within the complex come to enjoy the amenities, making it difficult for guests staying there to find pool chairs, tables for lunch, etc (it’s supposed to be only Palace guests enjoy the pools, etc, as you pay more). We decided to give the Riviera a try and booked a one bedroom suite (swim up).
The good: The room ( huge!!!) is amazing. It’s much too large for two people and I hate cramped hotel rooms. The property is extremely quiet and clean. A few people have been wonderful: Yeni at the spa, Gabriel at the pool bar and most especially Ivet at the preferred desk by our room.
The not so good: The atmosphere is very sterile. I could be anywhere, at any hotel in the world. There is really no character. Also, the service is subpar and the staffing is minimal. For example, in the preferred lounge, I waited while two people were on their phones to simply acknowledge me. Another example, I asked a lady at the buffet for one tortilla at the burrito bar and was told “no”. What? I told the waiter and he shrugged. Ok. I want one tortilla. You have tortillas to make customized burritos for people. I want a burrito, nothing in it???
Bottom line: The basic lack of service and friendly atmosphere is just not here. The Palace, on the other hand, had absolutely stellar staff and everyone actually acts like they not only enjoy their job but are glad you are there. We are on day 3 of 7 and I would move now. If only the Palace would go back to enforcing their own rules….
