Still my fave place to stay

Review by anna b Perth, Australia

Having come to Bali twice or sometimes thrice a year for almost 30 years, I started off in Kuta as a younger holiday-maker. A few trips later it was Legian as the Kuta party scene was not quite my style and trips after that saw me head to Ubud. For many years I enjoyed Ubud for its rice fields, its art, and its cultural ambience. As I grew that wee bit older, the many steps and steep hills of Ubud found me looking for somewhere with flatter ground...

And so, Sanur became my next place to stay - again, for many years. Family always stayed in Kuta and because I wanted to enjoy their company on holidays as well, I went back to Kuta. Before COVID closed Bali down to international tourists, some of my happiest memories were of those holidays with family. One day, I discovered (if you’ll pardon the pun) the Discovery (Kartika Plaza Hotel). It gave me a feeling of really coming home. The lobby is impressive and has displays according to whichever festival, cultural or religious period is being celebrated. This includes Western celebrations as well - their Christmas tree was a fairytale to look at one year. When Bali opened up to international tourists again, I made a bee-line for The Discovery. And this time, two family members also stayed there. Happy days! Swimming, lounging by the pool, being served drinks and snacks poolside, always with a smile. My room was meticulously cleaned every day by Mangku Dek, who went above and beyond to make sure I had everything I needed. (I must also add that Suyadnya Putra also made me feel special the time I stayed before COVID). The staff at breakfast in The Pond were equally attentive - one lady even went to the kitchen and brought me a freshly made do-nut because they hadn’t been put out on the counter yet. Every morning the breakfast staff knew exactly how I like my coffee - no need to ask anymore. Absolute gems, all of them! I stayed for three weeks. My aircon leaked water all over the floor one day, became a slipping hazard - but it was fixed that day! Another time, the top rung of the pool ladder was missing and I had great difficulty in climbing out of the pool - it was repaired within 2 days as they had to send the entire ladder off somewhere. I ate most of my meals at The Sokube and was never bored with their varied menu. Am looking forward to the previous Italian Restaurant’s facelift as well. Just a couple of suggestions: when there is a large meeting at The Pond for whatever reason, please still allow your other guests to order something for lunch. I am sure other guests would be happy sitting away from the meeting. Even at the tables outside. I felt somewhat disregarded one time when I went to have lunch there and was asked to go elsewhere. Or at least forewarn other guests of said meeting. Another polite suggestion - the main pool is very deep. Often there were mothers or nannies sitting on the steps of the pool with young children, making it difficult for older people to enter the pool by holding onto the handrail. There is a dedicated children’s pool at The Discovery. It would be helpful if small children and their mothers or nannies used the children’s pool. One day I watched a very young child, in a rubber tube, float around the area under the bridge. There was no adult in sight watching out for her should something happen. Except for me of course. Stressful! Last, but not least, it might be time to instal walk-in showers, at least in some of the rooms - on the Ground Floor. Stepping in and out of a slippery bath-tub to have a shower is hazardous for us older folk. Despite these suggestions, I still consider The Discovery my “home away from home” and - God willing, I will be staying there for many years to come.

Discovery gem .

Review by BamBam19756969 Perth, Australia

Just checked in hotel hasn’t changed much since my last stay. Staff friendly but reception bit quiet having to wait for help is a bit slow. Also payed for a pool room view! And cannot even see the pool , large choices and variety for breakfast and beautiful gardens - so far so good apart from my view

Great for couples and families

Review by maggieAdelaide Adelaide, Australia

We have stayed here previously and looked forward to coming back, was not disappointed. Resort looked beautiful, staff friendly and our stay was perfect. We had a garden view room and it was fine, and it looked straight at the ocean too...

Rooms were nice and spacious, bathroom clean with a great big shower. Pool was beautiful and the poolbar was a winner. Had a small pool for kiddies with a shade sail ( great idea) and you could hire floaties etc. Buffet breakfast was great, so much variety, lots of Asian options, the usual eggs and bacon, cereal, juices and loads of cakes/pastries. Would definitely stay again
