Excellent Time

Review by W7352KEmarinam

The Starfish Resort Halcyon Cove on Dickenson Bay was a charming quaint resort. My husband Rodney, sister in law Tina and brothrr inlaw Tony stayed in January 15-22 this year 2020..It was the best vacation we spent on the Island compared to the Dominican Republic , Antigua is by far more beautiful and clean. Will never vacation again in the Dominican ...

Very impressed with your management at that time Ms Marsh and Michael were very good to make sure our needs were met. We were greeted and informed of upcoming events by Front Desk Receptionists Caprese,Debbie and Sean. The Dining area was always clean and inviting. Devon Mgr and Ronis worked very hard to make sure your dietary neefs were met.Orlan the cook prepared delicious meals everyday. Restaurant staff Bernadette , Cecilia and Denise were very courteous, friendly snd prompt taking away dishes and filling drinks. Your houskeeping staff did a beautiful job cleaning especially Veronica The bar staff Errol,Ken,Olan, Helen, Lisa and Winsome did a wonderful job presenting the drinks which were very tasty . Entertainers Fenton and Jesse kept us entertained during the day and evening. The lovely towel girls Ladonna snd Stscy providing fresh towels and info about your Islands and history of it. All of these people did a top notch job making our trip relaxing, enjoyable and very memorable . Please don't change much in your renovations. to take away that beautiful charm and ambiance it is what made your hotel MOST BEAUTIFUL from all the others and youe excellent staff. I give Five Stars for this hotel. Hopefully when the world is free from this Virus we can make more. wonderful. memories.Thank you so very Much.

My first trip to the Caribbean

Review by ravenspur Toronto, Canada

Although this resort was dated in its furnishings and could do with some upgrades, we had a fantastic time here. Most of the staff made us feel like family (a special shout out to Malachi, Dalston, Margaretta & Roxanne ... I hope my spelling is ok); the food was excellent; the beach is the best in that area ......

drinks and entertainment/activities were great! Everything was so clean (my #1 priority in travelling).

Calm, Comfortable and Convenient

Review by Marc B Ottawa, Canada

This is my second time in Antigua, second time staying with the Starfish (previously Rex branded resort) but first time at the Halcyon Cove. Rumored to be the oldest resort on the island our previous stay was at the Starfish Jolly Beach, much of what I will be doing is comparing between both properties.

LOCATION As for the location of this resort, it’s plenty close to St John’s and the airport...

However this isn’t a very large island but still, the 15 min taxi ride to St John’s is very convenient as there are always a few taxis waiting by the hotel should you decide to just up and go ($24 USD return or $12 USD one way). The airport is a 25 min drive at most and you pretty much avoid the most congested parts of Antigua to get to this resort. Public transportation (Bus) isn’t quite as convenient as its location isn’t one of the island’s busy or populated areas and therefore the bus doesn’t come by frequently however if you decide to take the bus from St John’s to (Dickenson’s Bay – Halcyon Cove) it’ll cost you $1-$2USD per person and they typically only leave the bus station once bus is full.

FOOD/DINNING This is definitely where the resort won lots of points with me. Despite rumors of this resort closing/undergoing a massive renovation the food did not disappoint, in fact I would say it well surpassed that of my stay at the Jolly Beach which is easily 3 times the size and have 3 a la carte restaurants. I’ve never been one for buffets however the dinner buffet may not have had many options, the ones that they did have were fantastic. Dinner at the a la carte Warri Pier restaurant was exquisite! You can only dine there twice during your week’s stay so definitely take advantage and make reservations immediately upon arrival as there were only 3 different seating times and 4-5 tables per seating time as it is a staff limitation not tables. The breakfast was the only one that fell short with limited option especially fruit. I only saw fresh pineapple once during my stay which is something grown on the island.

STAFF/ACTIVITIES/SHOWS As for the staff, it was hit or miss but for the most part I can say the Warri Pier and dinner buffet staff were always kind, attentive and pleasant. Front desk were a bit cold and disinterested but after overhearing a few complaints by some of the guests and how upset they were I can maybe empathize with them and what they had to endure what seemed to always be complaints about the rooms. You will undoubtedly read a few reviews about Dave aka Uncle Dave to us. He is part of the entertainment staff and does an excellent job of speaking with all guests, asking if they are enjoying their stay. Given this is a small property and clearly not at capacity the shows and events were minimal however there was always something which was nice but again don’t expect large scale shows.

ROOM I think this is where this resort needs to come to terms that this is the real issue with this property. Yes it is a dated hotel, first one built on the island from what the locals say. Our first room was truly horrific, it was on the ground floor of the hotel and located furthest from the beach. Our room was is in the 400 block and it had that musty smell, likely due to the AC unit not in perfect working order. I did speak with the guest services and they said that there are no other rooms available and would have to check following day. We heard this numerous times throughout our stay and it was quite obvious that the hotel was definitely not at capacity, I would guess it was half full at most. We were to have a King bed however we were given a room with two double beds pushed together in front of a king bed headboard. Normally I wouldn’t have had a big issue with this had it not been for the simple fact that the two beds were of different length and height, at least 3 inches. Luckily we spoke with our rep with AC Vacations the very next morning, she was absolutely excellent. There was a total of three other couples there to speak to her and all had issues with the rooms but Liz (AC Rep) assured us to check with the hotel at 3pm to check into our new room. This room did not disappoint. King bed, working AC Unit, clean, fresh smelling, bright, this room well surpassed the room that I had at Jolly Beach. This room was in the 600 block on 3rd floor.

BEACH/POOL/AMENITIES Again, being one of the first resorts in Antigua, you can be sure they chose this location because of the beach. The beach is a good 2 kms long and is a pleasant walk. All sand and free of rocks and coral other than a few spots. Once past the first 10 feet in the water it is all soft sand in the water. The water is a very lovely color however if you are expecting to snorkel, there is a great deal of silt which makes visibility less than 2 feet. The pool was clean and temperature was ideal, compared to that of Jolly Beach which was cold. Beach chairs were in great shape, and always some available.

MY OWN RATINGS (after our room change)

Beach 4 / 5 Staff 2.5 / 5 Room 4 / 5 Activities 2 / 5 Food 4 / 5

If you are looking for a lively resort, this is def not the one. If you are looking for calm, relaxation, nice beach, good food on a budget I would def recommend provided you don't stay in the 400 block rooms.

Welcome home.

Review by Shelagh354

“Welcome home “ were the first words we heard on our return to Halcyon Cove for our ninth visit. This sentiment was repeated by many of the staff whom we have met over the years. As already commented by several reviewers, this hotel is closing for a major renovation, but I hope that the developers can still keep the charm of this small hotel...

The staff are absolutely amazing! I would like to give a special mention to Julian, Roxanne, Ken, Dalston, Fenton, Dave, Errol and Debbie. I know that you are all going through some difficult times ahead, but I also know that you will all be successful, whichever road life takes you down. I am keeping in touch with some of you and I hope to hear how the rest of you are doing. Maybe we will meet again in the future. My thoughts and good wishes go to you all.
